The serum aims to improve skin texture, enhance firmness, smooth out fine lines, and provide extended hydration and a more even skin tone.

I’m a huge Olay fan, so I placed an order as soon as this serum launched and have been using it consistently for the past few months.

My Olay Super Serum Review

Olay Super Serum

Olay Super Serum utilizes niacinamide, lactic acid, a peptide, and a vitamin C derivative to exfoliate and brighten your skin while targeting the visible signs of aging.

This Olay serum claims to offer 5 benefits in 1 serum:

  • Improved Skin Texture
  • More Even-Looking Skin Tone
  • Firmer Feeling Skin
  • Visibly Smoother Lines
  • Extended Hydration

Olay Super Serum Pros and Cons

Here are some pros and cons of Olay Super Serum:

PROSCONS
Lightweight and non-sticky formula
On the pricier side for a drugstore serum
Leaves a subtle glow due to the mica in the formulaContains mica for a slight glow, which you may not like
Layers well with other productsMay not provide dramatic results for more pronounced signs of aging
Brightens and evens out skin toneContains fragrance
Targets fine lines and wrinkles
Great for beginners and those with sensitive skin
Olay Super Serum Pros and Cons:
Olay Super Serum, open bottle with dropper applicator.

All these benefits make this an anti-aging serum, as it tackles wrinkles, firmness, and skin tone and texture. (Just what I love in a serum!)

The serum has an iridescent pinkish hue and a lightweight, liquid gel-like texture.

The mica in the formula leaves a subtle glow on my skin, which is the main reason why I like to use the serum during the day to give my skin a slightly radiant look under makeup.

Olay Super Serum, bottle next to sample on hand.

If there is one thing Olay does right, it is product texture and consistency. The serum feels comfortable on my skin and doesn’t leave any sticky residue.

One of my main concerns with many of my serums is their ability to play well with other products. Olay Super Serum layers beautifully under moisturizers and sunscreen without pilling or balling up.

Olay Super Serum, bottle next to sample spread on hand.

My Results

In terms of my results after using the serum during the day for the past few months, I have noticed that my skin looks plumper and more even-toned since incorporating this serum into my routine.

I have also noticed a very slight improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, although it’s not a drastic change, so it may be from the hydration and moisturizing benefits of the serum.

If you have noticeable deep-set wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of elasticity, I think you are better off using stronger actives like retinol (you can find retinol in Olay Retinol 24 products, which I think are some of the best drugstore retinol products out there).

Note On Lactic Acid Concentration

I wouldn’t have known there was lactic acid in the serum if I hadn’t looked at the ingredient list, which makes me think that the concentration of lactic acid isn’t too high.*

I can usually tell when lactic acid is in a product at 5% and higher since it makes my skin tingle slightly. This serum doesn’t tingle at all, which may be a good thing for those with sensitive skin.

I like that the serum isn’t irritating, but that benefit may lead to a drawback for some. If you are looking for a product with a higher concentration of potent actives, this may not be your best choice.

* Olay does not disclose the concentration of active ingredients in the serum.

Who’s It For?

The serum is formulated for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It is suitable for those looking to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, brighten their complexion, and achieve smoother and hydrated skin.

The water-based formula isn’t greasy, so it’s suitable for combination and oily skin types, but is nourishing enough for drier skin types.

This serum could be a great choice for you if you want a non-irritating anti-aging serum to hydrate and brighten your skin or if you’re looking to prevent the signs of aging.

Key Ingredients in Olay Super Serum and Their Benefits For Your Skin

Olay Super Serum contains active ingredients like niacinamide, peptides, and vitamin C to address the visible signs of aging. Here are the key ingredients:

  • Niacinamide: Niacinamide is Olay’s favorite ingredient. It’s a form of vitamin B3 that is known for its ability to improve skin texture and even out skin tone. It also helps strengthen the skin’s barrier, making it less vulnerable to damage and smoothes fine lines.
  • Lactic Acid: An alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that helps exfoliate dead skin cells, revealing smoother, brighter-looking skin.
  • Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4: Olay’s Collagen Peptide improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improves skin texture.
  • 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid: A stable form of vitamin C that helps brighten skin, improve skin tone, and reduce the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It also has antioxidant properties that help protect your skin from environmental damage.
  • Sodium Hyaluronate: Also known as hyaluronic acid, this salt form helps hydrate and plump the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Tocopheryl Acetate: A form of vitamin E that has antioxidant properties and helps protect the skin from environmental stressors like pollution.
  • Panthenol: A form of vitamin B5 that helps soothe and moisturize the skin.
  • Trehalose: A sugar molecule that helps retain moisture in the skin, keeping it hydrated and plump.
  • Sodium Lactate: A form of lactic acid that helps hydrate and exfoliate the skin, improving its texture and appearance.
  • Mica: A mineral ingredient that adds a subtle shimmer to the serum, giving the skin a radiant and healthy glow.

The serum also contains moisturizing glycerin, dimethicone, a silicone that provides a smooth finish on the skin, and added fragrance.

How To Use Olay Super Serum

To incorporate Olay Super Serum into your skincare routine, simply apply a pea-sized amount onto clean skin before moisturizing.

Gently massage in circular motions until fully absorbed.

Use up to twice daily, morning and/or night, for best results. And don’t forget to follow up with a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day to protect your skin from UV damage.

Olay Super Serum vs Olay Super Serum Night Repair:

Olay also offers a nighttime version of their Super Serum: Olay Super Serum Night Repair.

I reached out to Olay to learn about the differences between the two, and they said that the night serum is fragrance-free and contains a few different ingredients.

  • Olay Super Serum contains Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4, Olay’s Collagen Peptide, that targets wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Olay Super Serum Night Repair contains Palmitoyl Dipeptide-7, which is supposed to boost the production of collagen.

Olay Super Serum Night Repair also contains rice bran extract, which may help with hyperpigmentation, and salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid that is well-loved for its ability to treat acne and breakouts.

Both serums are the same retail price.

I’ll stick with using Olay Super Serum since the formulas are similar. I can always use Super Serum at night if I choose.

Alternatives to Olay Super Serum

While Olay Super Serum is a great option for those looking to brighten and hydrate your skin, other alternatives on the market offer similar benefits.

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, handheld.

A popular niacinamide serum is The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, which contains niacinamide plus zinc to help improve skin texture and balance oil production.

The serum targets textural irregularities, dryness, dullness, visible shine, and signs of congestion in your skin. The Ordinary niacinamide serum is excellent for oily and acne-prone skin types.

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Brightening Serum.

Another alternative is Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Brightening Serum, which contains similar ingredients to Olay Super Serum, including niacinamide, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, and palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 to brighten and plump your skin.

This drugstore vitamin C serum could be a great choice for dull skin or uneven skin tone.

The Bottom Line

Olay Super Serum is a well-rounded, gentle serum with active ingredients that targets multiple skin concerns.

Its lightweight formula makes it suitable for all skin types and can easily be incorporated into any skincare routine. It’s not the most potent anti-aging serum on the market, but great for beginners and those with sensitive skin.

Consistent use should provide brighter, smoother, and more hydrated skin. Just don’t expect results overnight. As with any skincare product, patience and consistency are key.

Yes, copper peptides sound like they came straight from the periodic table, but don’t let the name deter you.

Affordable Copper Peptide Serums: The Ordinary Multi-Peptide + Copper Peptides 1% Serum, Peach & Lily Copper Peptide Pro Firming Serum, and Naturium Multi-Peptide Advanced Serum.

Adding a copper peptide serum to your skincare routine can help improve the overall appearance of your skin. From reducing fine lines and wrinkles to boosting collagen production and improving skin texture, collagen peptides are perfect for aging and mature skin.

And the best part? You don’t have to spend a fortune on luxury products to reap these anti-aging benefits.

Copper Peptides in Skincare

Copper peptides are naturally occurring amino acid chains that help promote collagen and elastin production in your skin.

When applied topically, copper peptides can help rejuvenate aging skin by targeting oxidative damage from environmental factors like UV exposure and pollution. Collagen peptides also have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

So, what do copper peptides do for your skin?

Copper peptides help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve overall texture and tone. They can help plump your skin and improve the look of skin firmness, precisely what we need as our skin ages!

So, let’s get into the 3 anti-aging copper peptide serums that are actually quite affordable and can make a noticeable difference in the appearance of your skin.

1. The Ordinary Multi-Peptide + Copper Peptides 1% Serum

  • Key Ingredients: 1% Copper Peptides, 5 Peptide Complexes, Amino Acids, Hyaluronic Acid
  • Price: $30.90 for 1 oz.
The Ordinary Multi-Peptide + Copper Peptides 1% Serum on pink background.

I am a huge fan of The Ordinary and their budget-friendly yet effective skincare products. The Ordinary Multi-Peptide + Copper Peptides 1% Serum takes their best-selling Multi-Peptide + HA Serum to the next level by adding a 1% concentration of copper peptides.

This peptide serum targets multiple signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity and firmness, and dullness.

The serum contains 5 five peptide complexes, moisturizing amino acids, and multiple hyaluronic acids.

The cool-looking blue shade of the serum is thanks to the copper peptides. Don’t worry, it won’t have you looking like a Smurf! The blue shade disappears upon application.

At just $30.90, this is a very impressive anti-aging serum for the price.

2. Naturium Multi-Peptide Advanced Serum

  • Key Ingredients: Copper Peptides, Argireline Amplified Peptide, Encapsulated Ferulic Acid, Hydrolyzed Vegan Collagen
  • Price: $25.00 for 1 oz.
Naturium Multi-Peptide Advanced Serum on pnk background.

Naturium Multi-Peptide Advanced Serum is a unique formula that blends encapsulated copper peptides with Argireline Amplified peptide, a newer version of Argireline peptide that targets expression wrinkles.

These actives work together to reduce the look of wrinkles and fine lines, firm and plump your skin, and improve skin texture.

Additional ingredients include encapsulated ferulic acid, a potent antioxidant that helps repair free radical damage. Hydrolyzed vegan collagen gives your skin a more lifted look.

What makes this serum stand out is the encapsulation of ingredients, particularly the copper peptides, which reduces irritation and allows you to use the serum with other anti-aging actives, like vitamin C and retinol!

And you can’t beat the price! Love!

3. Peach & Lily Copper Peptide Pro Firming Serum

  • Key Ingredients: 0.2% Copper Peptide, 12 Peptides, 4 Amino Acids, Hyaluronic Acid, Squalane, Chicory Root and Shiitake Mushroom
  • Price: $49.00 for 1 oz.
Peach & Lily Copper Peptide Pro Firming Serum on pink background.

Peach & Lily Copper Peptide Pro Firming Serum targets multiple signs of aging with 0.2% Copper Peptide, 12 peptides, and 4 amino acids.

This concentrated Korean serum supports healthy fibroblasts, which produce collagen and elastin to improve skin elasticity and firmness.

Hydrating hyaluronic acid joins moisturizing squalane, antioxidants, and Korean herbs (chicory root and shiitake mushroom) to support the skin Matrix, where fibroblasts attach to collagen to create additional collagen.

With continued use, the result is smoother skin and a reduction in the look of fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet around the eyes, deep-set wrinkles, and firmer, bouncier skin.

At $49, this bright blue serum is definitely at a higher price point than the other serums, but it’s worth every penny for the advanced formula and powerful ingredients.

Copper Peptides For Skin Aging: Tips To Get The Best Results

  • Make sure to patch test and introduce copper peptide serums gradually into your routine to avoid any potential irritation.
  • Remember, consistency is key in skincare, and regular use will yield the best results.
  • These copper peptide serums are most effective within the first few months after opening.
  • Incorporate a high SPF sunscreen (at least SPF 30) into your routine to protect your skin from further sun damage, which can accelerate skin aging.
  • Be patient and give copper peptides time to work. Results may not be immediate, but with continued use, you’ll see the benefits of copper peptides on your skin.

Best CeraVe Cleansers For Acne https://www.abeautyedit.com/best-cerave-cleansers-for-acne/ https://www.abeautyedit.com/best-cerave-cleansers-for-acne/#respond Fri, 16 Jun 2023 13:47:27 +0000 https://www.abeautyedit.com/?p=21860 Finding the right skincare routine is a lot like piecing together a complex puzzle, especially when acne is part of the picture.

Another piece of the puzzle is finding the best cleanser for acne that will effectively remove surface dirt and debris while not over-drying your skin or stripping it of its natural oils.

CeraVe has long been a trusted, go-to brand for many looking to achieve clear, healthy-looking skin at an affordable price, and they offer several products specifically designed for acne sufferers.

Best CeraVe Cleansers For Acne: CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser, CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser, CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser, and CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser.

CeraVe’s cleansers, which typically contain a blend of three essential ceramides and other skin-loving ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, are formulated to cleanse your skin without stripping it of its natural protective barrier.

So in this post, I’ve narrowed it down to a few of the best CeraVe cleansers for acne.

This post contains affiliate links, and any purchases made through these links will result in a commission for me at no extra cost to you. Please read my Disclosure for additional information.

The Best CeraVe Cleanser For Acne

CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser is my overall pick for the best CeraVe cleanser for acne because it is formulated with a potent 2% concentration of salicylic acid that helps fight acne and breakouts.

Salicylic acid (depending on the concentration) tends to be more gentle on your skin than some other actives used to treat acne, like benzoyl peroxide.

CeraVe CleanserActive Ingredient
CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser2% Salicylic Acid
CeraVe Renewing SA CleanserSalicylic Acid (likely under 2%)
CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser4% benzoyl peroxide
CeraVe Foaming Facial CleanserN/A
CeraVe Cleansers for Acne – Active Ingredients:

NOTE: Please keep in mind that since everyone’s complexion is different, benzoyl peroxide-based CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser may be better suited for YOUR skin than salicylic acid, so you may need to try a few cleansers to determine which active ingredients work best for your skin.

All CeraVe cleansers are affordable and effective, so if you’re using one that isn’t on this list and are happy with your results, keep using it!

CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser

CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser

CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser is a 2% salicylic acid acne treatment and foaming cleanser formulated with CeraVe’s Oil Control Technology that helps clear acne and reduce blackheads and the look of pores.

This gel-to-foam face wash is designed to target breakouts and help clear existing acne while preventing new pimples from forming.

Salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), clears away dirt, oil, and other impurities that can clog pores and lead to acne.

CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser bottle next to cleansing gel sample on back of hand.

Salicylic acid exfoliates dead skin cells, which also helps improve the look of uneven skin tone while preventing new blemishes from forming. It’s the perfect active for acne-prone skin.

Clinical studies show that salicylic acid decreases skin lipids (oils) and has anti-inflammatory properties. Its anti-inflammatory benefits are helpful for redness and inflammation that come along with acne and breakouts.

CeraVe’s Oil-Absorbing Technology minimizes shine, and purifying hectorite clay absorbs excess oil, making this cleanser great for oily skin too.

This acne cleanser contains three essential ceramides (ceramide NP, ceramide AP, and ceramide EOP) that help repair and restore the skin’s natural protective barrier. Niacinamide helps soothe irritation and strengthens your skin barrier.

CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser bottle next to cleansing foam sample on back of hand.

The nice part about this foam cleanser is that it can potentially be used in conjunction with other over-the-counter or prescription-based acne treatments – but it’s important that you check with your dermatologist or doctor to be sure.

The cleanser has a creamy foam and is fragrance-free, paraben-free, and non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores.

CeraVe Acne Treatment: CeraVe Acne Control Gel

If you want to add a more targeted acne treatment to your skincare routine, you can add CeraVe Acne Control Gel, a 2% salicylic acid acne leave-on treatment, after cleansing with CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser.*

The lightweight gel contains 2% salicylic acid plus alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) glycolic and lactic acid to exfoliate your skin, smooth rough skin, improve skin texture, and reduce the appearance of blemishes.

Soothing niacinamide to help reduce redness and nourishing ceramides support your protective skin barrier. It’s a great way to add a more targeted acne treatment to your routine.

*If the cleanser and gel are too strong for your skin but you still want to use a leave-on acne treatment, you can pair CeraVe Acne Control Gel with another gentle cleanser.

CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser

CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser

CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser is a gentle exfoliating cleanser formulated for normal skin and is designed to target roughness and dullness while helping to prevent acne breakouts.

Salicylic acid penetrates your pores and clears away dirt, oil, and debris.

The salicylic acid concentration is not disclosed, but if you look at the ingredient list, you’ll see the salicylic acid is lower on the list (ingredient lists go from highest to lowest concentrations), so it probably isn’t a 2% concentration like in Acne Control Cleanser.

The cleanser also contains niacinamide to help visibly reduce the appearance of skin discoloration and calm irritation. Three essential ceramides help keep the skin barrier strong and healthy.

CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser bottle next to gel sample on back of hand.

Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is a low molecular weight hyaluronic acid that helps retain your skin’s moisture levels, while cholesterol works with ceramides to improve skin hydration and restore your skin barrier.

CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser bottle next to foam sample on back of hand.

The gel consistency of this foaming cleanser creates a rich lather that deep cleanses without stripping your skin’s natural moisture balance, leaving it feeling soft and refreshed.

The non-irritating formula is fragrance-free and non-comedogenic.

CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser

CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser, handheld.

CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser is a 4% benzoyl peroxide foaming acne face wash formulated to clear acne and blackheads and prevent the formation of new acne while allowing your skin to heal.

The cleanser dissolves dirt, makeup, and excess oil with 4% benzoyl peroxide, an organic acid that has antimicrobial benefits and reduces the bacteria that causes acne (P. acnes).

CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser, flatlay of tube next to sample on hand.

Benzoyl peroxide also supports dead skin cell turnover, which helps reduce clogged pores and breakouts and has anti-inflammatory benefits.

This foaming cream acne cleanser also contains niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, which soothes and calms.

Hyaluronic acid (in the salt form of sodium hyaluronate) helps keep your skin hydrated. Three essential ceramides maintain your skin’s protective barrier.

This creamy foaming cleanser is fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, so it won’t worsen or cause acne.

CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser, flatlay of tube next to foam sample on hand.

Benzoyl peroxide is often included in over-the-counter products between 2.5% and 10%, so this 4% concentration is mid-strength.

NOTE: If you have sensitive or dry skin, it’s important to note that this benzoyl peroxide face wash may be too drying and irritating. If this is the case, consider trying another CeraVe acne cleanser with different active ingredients.

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser

If you want a CeraVe cleanser that doesn’t contain any potent active to treat acne, CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser is a great choice.

This foaming gel face wash is formulated for a normal to oily skin type and also works for acne-prone skin since it removes oil, dirt, and makeup without stripping your skin or compromising your delicate skin barrier.

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser bottle next to gel sample on back of hand.

A compromised skin barrier may cause dryness, irritation, and inflammation. It also makes your skin more vulnerable to environmental aggressors and pollutants.

All these side effects of a weakened skin barrier can worsen acne and breakouts.

The cleanser contains three essential ceramides (ceramide NP, ceramide AP, ceramide EOP) that help repair and restore your skin’s natural protective barrier while hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid acts like a sponge and draws moisture to your skin.

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser bottle next to foam sample on hand.

Cholesterol, a skin lipid, supports a healthy skin barrier. Phytosphingosine is another lipid with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits, making it ideal for acne-prone skin.

This gentle and non-comedogenic cleanser is fragrance-free and can be used alongside other acne treatments since it contains no potent acne-treatment ingredients.

For more on this cleanser, see my post: CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser vs Foaming Cleanser.

CeraVe Cleansers For Acne: The Bottom Line

Whether you’re combating stubborn breakouts or just want to refresh and restore balance, there are a variety of affordable CeraVe products that can help get the job done.

Just remember that what works for me might not work the same for you, so it’s important to listen to your skin and check with your dermatologist or doctor if you aren’t getting the results you want.

Whether you choose a CeraVe cleanser formulated with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or no active acne-fighter, make sure to look for cleansers that are fragrance-free and non-comedogenic to avoid further irritation and breakouts.

And don’t forget to follow with a gentle moisturizing cream or lotion and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher during the day!

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser vs Gentle Skin Cleanser:

Similarities

Both Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser and Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser are suitable for sensitive skin.

Both cleansers defend against 5 signs of skin sensitivity:

  • Dryness
  • Irritation
  • Roughness
  • Tightness
  • A weakened skin barrier

The cleansers are hypoallergenic, paraben-free, and won’t clog pores and cause breakouts.

They contain the same active ingredients: glycerin, niacinamide, and panthenol.

Both cleansers are also priced similarly. Of course, prices will vary based on the retailer, but there isn’t a substantial difference in price between the two.

Differences

One of the main differences between the cleansers is that Daily Facial Cleanser is formulated for or combination to oily, sensitive skin, while Gentle Skin Cleanser is formulated for dry to normal, sensitive skin.

Daily Facial Cleanser has a gel texture that creates a light foam, while Gentle Skin Cleanser has a gel-cream texture that doesn’t foam.

Daily Facial Cleanser is available with a masking fragrance or fragrance-free, whereas Gentle Skin Cleanser is fragrance-free.

Daily Facial Cleanser contains three surfactants to clean skin, while Gentle Skin Cleanser contains only one.

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser is a gel-to-foam cleanser that deeply cleanses combination to oily, sensitive skin.

This face wash removes makeup, dirt, and excess oil without stripping your skin of its natural moisture and leaving it feeling dry.

The cleanser also helps reduce the look of pores for a smoother, more even complexion.

The cleanser contains three surfactants to clean your skin: cocamidopropyl betaine, disodium laureth sulfosuccinate, and sodium cocoamphoacetate.

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser bottle next to sample of gel in palm of hand.

Daily Facial Cleanser is formulated with niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, to help strengthen the skin’s protective barrier and reduce redness and irritation.

Glycerin moisturizes and improves skin hydration, while panthenol (vitamin B5) helps support your skin’s barrier and offers anti-inflammatory benefits that help with wound healing.

Suitable for sensitive skin, the foaming cleanser is hypoallergenic, paraben-free, and won’t clog your pores, making it ideal for acne breakouts and acne-prone skin.

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser bottle next to sample of gel turned to foam with water added in palm of hand.

Cetaphil Daily Cleanser creates a very light foam with small bubbles when mixed with water, as shown in the image above.

The light foam is ideal if you have combination skin or an oily skin type that wants a deep clean without having your skin feeling stripped.

Please note that this Cetaphil cleanser original formula contains a masking fragrance, but a new, fragrance-free version is now available!

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is formulated with Micellar Technology to remove dirt, makeup, oil, and other impurities without drying out your skin.

Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser has a gel-cream texture and is formulated for dry to normal, sensitive skin.

This Cetaphil cleanser is a gentle cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils or dry it out.

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser bottle next to sample of gel cream in palm of hand.

In fact, it only contains one surfactant to clean your skin, sodium cocoyl isethionate, vs Daily Facial Cleanser’s three surfactants.

Similar to Daily Facial Cleanser, this cleanser contains glycerin for non-irritating moisture, niacinamide, which improves ceramide production for improved hydration and a stronger skin barrier, and humectant panthenol for additional soothing moisture.

Gentle Skin Cleanser is hypoallergenic, paraben-free, and won’t clog your pores.

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser bottle next to sample of gel cream with water added in palm of hand.

Unlike Daily Facial Cleanser, this Gentle Skin Cleanser only comes in one version: fragrance-free.

It’s perfect for sensitive and dry skin types that want a gentle, non-foaming cleanse that leaves your skin hydrated, soft, and smooth.

Using Cetaphil Cleansers In Your Skincare Routine

While these Cetaphil cleansers can be used on their own as a first cleanse in your morning skincare routine, you may consider adding in a cleansing balm or oil-based cleanser in your evening skincare routine if you wear makeup or sunscreen or are exposed to environmental pollutants throughout the day.

If you choose to double cleanse, start with a cleansing balm, cleansing oil, or micellar water to remove makeup, and then follow with Daily Facial Cleanser or Gentle Skin Cleanser to clean your skin.

Optionally, you can follow your cleansing with a toner, serum, or other skincare treatment tailored to your skin type and skin concerns.

One step you shouldn’t skip, regardless of your skin type or skin concerns, is moisturizer. A facial moisturizer will help hydrate, lock in vital moisture, and support a healthy skin barrier.

In your morning routine, be sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher as the last step of your skincare routine to protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Cetaphil Cleansers By Skin Type

Cetaphil offers many cleansers formulated for different skin types, from oily and acne-prone to dry, redness-prone (Cetaphil Foaming Face Wash for Redness Prone Skin) and dull skin and hyperpigmentation (Cetaphil Healthy Radiance Gentle PHA Exfoliating Cleanser).

With so many choices, it can be challenging to determine which is right for you. That’s why it’s important to figure out your skin type and any areas of concern before selecting the best Cetaphil facial cleanser for your needs.

All Cetaphil products are suitable for sensitive skin, so you may want to look at secondary skin concerns to make your choice.

Cetaphil Hydrating Foaming Cream Cleanser

Cetaphil Hydrating Foaming Cream Cleanser

For a cleanser that works for multiple skin types, consider Cetaphil Hydrating Foaming Cream Cleanser.

It contains glycerin, niacinamide, panthenol, and prebiotic aloe to hydrate and nourish your skin.

It’s the best of both worlds: the gel cream texture turns into a foam to give you a deep clean without stripping your skin. This is my favorite Cetaphil cleanser!

Cetaphil Cleansers For Acne-Prone Skin

Cetaphil Cleansers For Oily Skin

Cetaphil Cleansers For Dry Skin

Cetaphil Cleansers For Combination Skin

Cetaphil Cleansers For Normal Skin

Whichever cleanser you choose, at minimum, be sure to follow your facial cleanser with a moisturizer to protect your skin’s natural moisture barrier and keep it feeling hydrated and balanced throughout the day.

And don’t forget sunscreen to protect from the sun’s harmful rays!

About Cetaphil

The Cetaphil brand was first developed in 1947 by a pharmacist in Texas. The brand was initially created to provide gentle, non-irritating skincare products for individuals with sensitive skin.

Cetaphil’s first product Cetaphil Cleansing Lotion is still sold today as Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, discussed above.

The name Cetaphil comes from “cet” of cetearyl alcohol, a hydrating active, and “phil,” meaning loving. So the name Cetaphil translates to “the love of moisturizing and soothing skin.”

In the decades since it was founded, Cetaphil has become a well-known and trusted drugstore skincare brand, with a range of products formulated for different skin types and concerns, including baby and suncare products.

Cetaphil products are now sold in over 70 countries worldwide and are widely used by dermatologists and other skincare professionals.

Today the brand continues its commitment to creating many high-quality, gentle skincare products suitable for sensitive skin and skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and rosacea.

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser vs Gentle Skin Cleanser: The Bottom Line

When choosing a Cetaphil cleanser, it’s important to first determine your skin type so you can choose the one best suited for your needs:

  • Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser –> Combination to Oily, Sensitive Skin
  • Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser –> Normal to Dry, Sensitive Skin

Whether you opt for the Daily Facial Cleanser or Gentle Skin Cleanser, both provide excellent cleansing without stripping your skin of its natural oils or drying it out.

Best Olay Products For Your 40s And Beyond https://www.abeautyedit.com/best-olay-products-for-your-40s/ https://www.abeautyedit.com/best-olay-products-for-your-40s/#respond Fri, 12 May 2023 19:46:23 +0000 https://www.abeautyedit.com/?p=21108 As we age, our skin tends to become drier, duller, and more prone to wrinkles, so it is important to adjust your skincare routine and use products specially designed for aging and mature skin.

Many Olay products target the specific needs of aging skin, offering a wide range of products that can help you look and feel your best. So today, we’ll discuss the best Olay products for your 40s and beyond.

Olay Products for 40s: AHA + Peptide 24, Vitamin C + Peptide 24, Retinol 24, Collagen Peptide 24, Age Defy Anti-Aging Night Cream, and Regenerist Micro Sculpting Cream.

Although Olay is a drugstore skincare brand, they have some incredibly effective products that outperform many pricier brands at a fraction of the price. I love Olay products, and as you can see from the image above, I’ve purchased quite a few.

These anti-aging products deliver noticeable results with regular use and address issues such as fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, and loss of elasticity and firmness.

Best Olay Products for Your 40s: 6 Olay Regenerist Moisturizers stacked in two rows. Row 1: Hyaluronic + Peptide 24, Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX, AHA + Peptide 24. Row 2: Micro-Sculpting Cream, Collagen Peptide 24 MAX, and Retinol 24 MAX.

Best Olay Products for Your 40s and Beyond

I’ve grouped the best Olay skincare products into three main categories:

  • Serums
  • Eye Creams
  • Moisturizers

You can mix and match the products to find out what works best for your skin or stick to using all the products from the same range.

The one thing Olay always seems to get right is product texture. The products in this post are lightweight, absorb quickly into the skin, and leave your skin feeling incredibly silky and soft.

A few notes before we get to the products:

When using retinol and exfoliating acids, it is important to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily. Since retinol can make your skin sensitive to the sun, retinol should only be used in your evening skincare routine.

Always patch test a new skincare product before using it on your skin for the first time to ensure that you don’t have an allergic reaction.

Olay Skincare Routine

For a sample Olay anti-aging skincare routine and for some of the best anti-aging ingredients to look for in Olay’s products, scroll to the bottom of the post!

Olay Ingredient Concentraions

Olay does not disclose the concentration of actives in their products. I’ve asked them about the concentrations, and they responded that it is proprietary information.

This makes it a bit difficult to compare their formulas to other brands that disclose ingredient concentrations, but I find Olay products very effective based on the improvements I have seen in my skin.

Olay Prices

Even though Olay is a drugstore skincare brand, some of their products get a little pricey.

I wanted to include some more affordable products in this post, so you’ll see a few less expensive options that address the visible signs of aging at a more affordable price point.

Olay Anti-Aging Cleansers

Best Olay Products for Your 40s: Olay Regenerist Regenerating Cream Cleanser, Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Brightening Cleanser, and Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Revitalizing Cleanser.

Olay offers cleansers in their range of Vitamin C, Retinol 24, Hyaluronic, and Collagen Peptide 24 products. These products are nice but not necessary for your Olay anti-aging skincare routine.

Since cleansers get washed off your face, you don’t get the lasting benefits of a leave-on treatment.

But if you enjoy certain Olay serums and moisturizers in their Regenerist product lines, you can pair them with the corresponding cleanser.

Use whichever cleanser works best for your skin type, and then focus on the anti-aging benefits of the following Olay products:

Best Olay Serums For Your 40s & Beyond

To supercharge your anti-aging results, add a serum to your skincare routine. Serums often contain the most actives of all the products in your skincare routine.

Since serums are applied directly after cleansing, they will usually absorb better than other products, allowing the formulas to provide all the benefits they were designed to deliver to your skin.

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Brightening Serum

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Brightening Serum.
BEST FOR:Brightening, Reducing Fine Lines, and Antioxidant Protection
KEY INGREDIENTS:3-O Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Lactic Acid, Niacinamide, Peptides, and Antioxidants-Free
WHEN TO USE:AM and/or PM Skincare Routine
Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Brightening Serum

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Brightening Serum combines multiple anti-aging actives to give you a complete anti-aging serum.

The serum contains 3-O ethyl ascorbic acid, lactic acid, niacinamide, peptides, and antioxidants to help reduce wrinkles, brighten skin tone, and improve skin texture.

3-O ethyl ascorbic acid is a vitamin C derivative that is more stable than pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and less irritating. It has antioxidant, collagen-boosting, and brightening benefits, like pure vitamin C, but is less potent.

The serum also contains panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) and trelahose, which are humectants to help your skin retain moisture.

Per Olay, with Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Serum, your skin will be instantly moisturized with hydration lasting 24 hours. In one week, you’ll see visibly even skin tone, and within a month, you’ll see 2X brighter skin.

The serum contains 2X the Peptides compared to the original Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Serum.

Please note that there is added citrus fragrance in this Olay serum.

Olay Retinol 24 MAX Night Serum

Best Olay Products for 40s: Olay Retinol24 MAX Night Serum, handheld.
BEST FOR:Reducing Wrinkles and Fine Lines, Improving Skin Texture and Tone
KEY INGREDIENTS:Retinol, Niacinamide, and Amino Peptide
WHEN TO USE:PM Skincare Routine
Olay Retinol 24 MAX Night Serum

Olay Retinol 24 MAX Night Serum contains a potent dose of retinol to reduce the look of wrinkles, fine lines, and uneven skin tone.

The silky serum contains 20% more Retinol 24 Hydrating Complex than the base Retinol24 serum.

Olay’s proprietary Retinoid Complex combines retinol and retinyl propionate to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin texture and tone and reduce the look of pores. (I notice a difference after one use!)

The serum also contains Olay’s favorite ingredient, niacinamide. Also known as vitamin B3, niacinamide helps reduce inflammation and redness and improve skin barrier function.

Palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, Olay’s Amino Peptide, helps firm the skin.

From the results I’ve seen, I think this retinol serum is Olay’s most potent anti-aging serum!

Olay Collagen Peptide 24 MAX Serum

Olay Collagen Peptide 24 MAX Serum, handheld.
BEST FOR:Firming, Reducing Fine Lines, and Hydration
KEY INGREDIENTS:Collagen Peptide, Niacinamide, and Tremella Fuciformis Sporocarp Extract
WHEN TO USE:AM and/or PM Skincare Routine
Olay Collagen Peptide 24 MAX Serum

Olay Collagen Peptide 24 MAX Serum is a hydrating serum that contains peptides and niacinamide to hydrate and firm your skin.

This lightweight, silky serum contains Olay’s Collagen Peptide, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (supported by palmitoyl dipeptide-7), which helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin.

Niacinamide, vitamin B3, is also included to help the skin retain moisture, support cell turnover, and gently exfoliate dull skin.

Tremella fuciformis sporocarp extract is a sugar molecule derived from the Silver Ear mushroom that contains glucuronic acid, just like hyaluronic acid (HA). This plant extract is supposed to have better moisture retention capabilities than HA.

This MAX serum contains 2X the Collagen Peptide vs the original Collagen Peptide 24 Serum.

Olay AHA + Peptide 24 Resurfacing Serum

Olay AHA + Peptide 24 Resurfacing Serum
BEST FOR:Brightening Dull Skin, Improving Skin Texture and Tone
KEY INGREDIENTS:Niacinamide, Lactic Acid, and Amino Peptide
WHEN TO USE:AM or PM skincare routine
Olay AHA + Peptide 24 Resurfacing Serum

Olay AHA + Peptide 24 Resurfacing Serum is all about brightening dull skin and improving skin texture with the chemical exfoliant lactic acid.

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and active ingredient that helps to gently exfoliate the top layer of skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and dark spots.

Lactic acid is my favorite AHA because it is less irritating than glycolic acid, another popular AHA, and offers moisturizing benefits, which makes it an excellent choice for dehydrated or dry skin.

This Olay product also contains niacinamide for additional brightening and moisture, plus palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 to firm the skin and improve skin roughness.

The one quality that stands out with the AHA + Peptide 24 range of Olay products is the lightweight texture. This Olay serum feels nearly weightless on my skin!

It’s non-sticky and absorbs quickly. It works well under makeup too.

Affordable Olay Niacinamide/Peptide Serum:

Olay Wrinkle Correction Serum – Vitamin B3 + Peptides

Olay Wrinkle Correction Serum - Vitamin B3 + Collagen Peptides
BEST FOR:Reducing Wrinkles and Fine Lines
KEY INGREDIENTS:Niacinamide and Amino Peptide
WHEN TO USE:AM and/or PM skincare routine
Olay Wrinkle Correction Serum – Vitamin B3 + Peptides

You can often find Olay Wrinkle Correction Serum – Vitamin B3 + Peptides a few dollars cheaper than some of the other serums in this post, so I wanted to include it as another option to address wrinkles, as the name suggests.

Niacinamide improves skin tone and hydration, while two peptides, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 and palmitoyl dipeptide-7 peptide, help support your skin’s natural renewal process and help it become more resilient.

I like this serum because you can easily mix and match it with other Olay products. You can even layer it with other Olay serums since it doesn’t contain strong actives like retinoids or exfoliating acids.

Best Olay Eye Creams For Your 40s & Beyond

Let’s not forget about our eyes. Since our eyes have some of the thinnest skin on our bodies, aging tends to be more pronounced around this area.

The formation of fine lines and wrinkles, crepey skin, dark circles, and puffiness around our eyes often occur as we age, so it’s essential to give this area some extra TLC.

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Brightening Eye Cream

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Brightening Eye Cream, handheld.

This formula contains 3-O ethyl ascorbic acid, niacinamide (vitamin B3), and palmitoyl pentapeptide-4. Glycerin and panthenol provide additional moisture.

This fragrance-free vitamin C eye cream is super lightweight and has a cooling effect on your skin. It hydrates, brightens, and refreshes the skin around your eyes.

This eye cream pairs well with Olay’s Vitamin C + Peptide 24 serum and moisturizer.

Olay Retinol 24 MAX Eye Cream’s Retinol Complex of retinol and retinyl propionate helps smooth fine lines and crow’s feet around the eyes while improving skin texture and tone.

Niacinamide strengthens your skin barrier to improve hydration, while antioxidants help to provide extra nourishment for the delicate skin around your eyes.

The eye cream has a very creamy consistency that easily absorbs into the skin with no heavy feeling or greasy residue.

Olay Collagen Peptide 24 MAX Eye Cream

Olay Collagen Peptide 24 MAX Eye Cream, handheld.
BEST FOR:Firming, Reducing Fine Lines, and Hydration
KEY INGREDIENTS:Collagen Peptide, Niacinamide, and Tremella Fuciformis Sporocarp Extract

Olay Collagen Peptide 24 MAX Eye Cream

Olay’s Collagen Peptide, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (also known as Amino Peptide), pairs with palmitoyl dipeptide-7 to smooth fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes while improving skin texture.

Niacinamide brightens, smooths fine lines, and strengthens your skin’s moisture barrier.

This MAX eye cream contains 2X the Collagen Peptide vs the original Collagen Peptide 24 Eye Cream.

This eye cream is super gentle and works well under makeup too.

Best Olay Moisturizers For Your 40s & Beyond

Olay does a great job with the formulas of their moisturizing products. They have an elegant texture and feel on the skin while delivering effective actives to address multiple skin concerns:

Olay Regenerist Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Hydrating Moisturizer

Olay Regenerist Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Hydrating Moisturizer, handheld.

Olay Regenerist Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Moisturizer

Olay Regenerist Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Moisturizer uses the power of vitamin C derivative 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid to brighten and smooth your skin.

Niacinamide boosts the moisturizer’s brightening power, while lactic acid gently exfoliates. Olay’s Amino Petide works to firm your skin.

Glycerin, panthenol, and trelahose provide hydration to keep your skin feeling soft and supple for up to 24 hours.

This moisturizer has a light gel-cream consistency with a bright, refreshing citrus fragrance.

You can use this gel cream morning and night or just during the day if you prefer to use another moisturizer in your evening skincare routine.

Like the vitamin C serum, this vitamin C moisturizer is lightweight and doesn’t weigh your skin down.

This MAX moisturizer contains 2X the peptides vs the original Vitamin C + Peptide 24 moisturizer.

For more details on my experience with these Olay vitamin C products, please see my Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 review post.

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Serum vs Moisturizer

While you can certainly use both the Vitamin C + Peptide 24 serum and moisturizer together, if I had to choose just one, I would choose the moisturizer since it provides the benefits of a peptide and vitamin C derivative, plus it seals in hydration and moisture.

Olay Retinol 24 MAX Night Moisturizer

Olay Retinol24 MAX Night Moisturizer
BEST FOR:Reducing Wrinkles and Fine Lines, Improving Skin Texture and Tone
KEY INGREDIENTS:Retinol, Niacinamide, and Amino Peptide
WHEN TO USE:PM Skincare Routine
Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 MAX Night Moisturizer

Olay Retinol 24 MAX Night Moisturizer contains a proprietary blend of retinol and retinyl propionate. The moisturizer contains 20% more Retinol 24 Hydrating Complex vs. the base Retino24 moisturizer.

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) strengthens your skin barrier, and Olay’s Amino Peptide firms, giving your skin a more youthful appearance.

The Retinol24 MAX moisturizer targets wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots, and enlarged pores for brighter, smoother skin with a more even skin tone.

The cream is super silky and feels very nourishing on the skin. It’s also fragrance-free and non-greasy.

I notice a difference in my skin after only one night of using this cream. My pores look smaller, and my skin texture is more refined.

I think this Olay’s best anti-aging moisturizer!

For more details on my experience with these Olay Retinol 24 products, please see my Olay Retinol 24 review post.

Olay Collagen Peptide 24 MAX Face Moisturizer

Olay Collagen Peptide 24 MAX Face Moisturizer, handheld.
BEST FOR:Firming, Reducing Fine Lines, and Hydration
KEY INGREDIENTS:Collagen Peptide, Niacinamide, and Tremella Fuciformis Sporocarp Extract
WHEN TO USE:AM and/or PM Skincare Routine
Olay Collagen Peptide 24 MAX Face Moisturizer

Olay Collagen Peptide 24 MAX Face Moisturizer is powered by Olay’s proprietary Collagen Peptide, which firms your skin and improves skin texture.

Niacinamide, another key ingredient in this moisturizer, helps reduce your skin’s dullness and keeps it looking vibrant. It also evens discoloration, boosts your skin’s natural collagen production, and helps hydrate your skin.

Tremella fuciformis sporocarp extract is a type of sugar molecule that comes from the Silver Ear mushroom. It contains an active called glucuronic acid, which is similar to hyaluronic acid (HA) and is believed to be more effective in retaining moisture than HA.

The cream is formulated with 2X the Collagen Peptide compared to the base Collagen Peptide 24 moisturizer, so you get double the anti-aging benefits.

The rich but surprisingly lightweight moisturizer isn’t greasy at all and works well with makeup.

This moisturizer is a great choice if your skin can’t tolerate retinol or stronger actives. You still get the anti-aging benefits of peptides but without the irritation of retinol. Plus, you can use it twice a day.

As a bonus, this moisturizer looks beautiful on your vanity with its luxe gold lid!

For more details on my experience with these Olay products, please see my Olay Collagen Peptide 24 review post.

Olay AHA + Peptide 24 Facial Moisturizer

Olay AHA + Peptide 24 Facial Moisturizer, handheld.
BEST FOR:Brightening Dull Skin, Improving Skin Texture and Tone
KEY INGREDIENTS:Niacinamide, Lactic Acid, and Amino Peptide
WHEN TO USE:AM or PM Skincare Routine
Olay AHA + Peptide 24 Facial Moisturizer

Olay AHA + Peptide 24 Facial Moisturizer evens skin texture and hydrates your complexion with the AHA lactic acid, niacinamide, and peptides.

The active ingredients improve skin cell turnover to improve skin texture and reduce the look of dark spots and discoloration.

Lactic acid dissolves and removes dead skin cells, revealing brighter, smoother skin.

Niacinamide helps reduce your skin’s dullness and keeps it looking vibrant. It also evens discoloration and boosts your skin’s natural collagen production while balancing oil production and the appearance of pores.

Amino Peptide helps firm your skin, reduce the look of wrinkles, and improve skin tone.

This facial moisturizer is so lightweight yet hydrating. You can pair it with AHA + Peptide 24 Serum for a double dose of exfoliation or use it alone.

The moisturizer is excellent for dry skin types and doesn’t feel too potent, so if you have sensitivity to glycolic acid or strong concentrations of lactic acid, this could be a great alternative.

For more details on my experience with these Olay products, please see my Olay AHA + Peptide 24 review post.

Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream

I couldn’t write a post on the best Olay products for your 40s and beyond without mentioning their best-selling Micro Sculpting Cream.

Olay Micro-Sculpting Cream
BEST FOR:Brightening, Firming, and Hydrating
KEY INGREDIENTS:Niacinamide, Amino Peptide, and Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid)
WHEN TO USE:AM and/or PM Skincare Routine
Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream

Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream contains brightening niacinamide, Olay’s Amino Peptide (palmitoyl pentapeptide-4), plus sodium hyaluronate (the salt form of hyaluronic acid) to deeply hydrate and nourish your skin.

Sodium hyaluronate helps to plump up the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Olay’s Amino Peptide helps to increase collagen production, which helps to firm and tighten the skin.

This cult favorite moisturizer instantly hydrates your skin while strengthening your skin barrier.

Olay Micro Sculpting Cream feels lightweight and has a luxurious, velvety texture. It absorbs quickly and is non-greasy, so you don’t need to worry about it feeling sticky on your skin.

It comes in a fragrance-free version, as shown above, and an original version with fragrance.

Olay Total Effects Face Moisturizer

Olay Total Effects Face Moisturizer, handheld.

Another more affordable Olay face cream is Olay Total Effects Moisturizer:

BEST FOR:Reducing Wrinkles and Fine Lines, Improving Skin Tone, Hydrating, Firming, and Brightening
KEY INGREDIENTS:Niacinamide, Vitamin C Derivative, and Green Tea Extract (Antioxidant)
WHEN TO USE:AM and/or PM skincare routine
Olay Total Effects Face Moisturizer

Olay Total Effects Face Moisturizer provides seven skin benefits: hydrates, replenishes, brightens, evens the look of tone, minimizes the look of pores, visibly firms, and visibly smooths.

It contains Olay’s VitaNiacin Complex II of niacinamide and vitamins for healthy-looking skin.

Sodium ascorbyl phosphate, a vitamin C derivative, and green tea extract help to brighten, restore and protect the skin from environmental aggressors.

I’ve gone through countless bottles of this moisturizer over the years. I love the convenient pump bottle and nourishing, non-greasy formula.

The original version with fragrance is shown above. It is also available in a fragrance-free version.

More Affordable Olay Anti-Aging Night Cream

Olay Age Defying Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream

Olay Age Defying Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream
BEST FOR:Brightening, Firming, and Hydrating
KEY INGREDIENTS:Niacinamide, Pro-Vitamin B5, and Vitamin E

The oil-free cream smooths skin texture without clogging your pores but feels nourishing and hydrating. It is designed to reduce the look of wrinkles after just 7 nights of use.

Please note that this moisturizer contains added fragrance.

Olay Anti-Aging Products For Dry Skin

If you have dehydrated or dry skin, you may see some temporary plumping and smoothing of fine lines once you hydrate your skin.

Hyaluronic acid is an excellent ingredient for this, as it can help retain moisture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Olay has a complete line of hyaluronic acid products that contain a firming peptide.

While I wouldn’t put them in the same category as vitamin C and retinol products for longer-lasting anti-aging benefits, they are a great option for those with dry skin who want an immediate plumping effect.

For more details on my experience with these Olay products, please see my Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 review post.

Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Serum

Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Serum
BEST FOR:Hydrating
KEY INGREDIENTS:Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, and Olay’s Amino Peptide
WHEN TO USE:AM and/or PM skincare routine
Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Serum

Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Serum floods your skin with long-lasting hydration and moisture thanks to hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate), niacinamide, and peptides.

This silky, creamy serum is formulated to provide extended hydration for plump, dewy skin.

Hyaluronic acid in the salt form of sodium hyaluronate acts like a sponge and helps your skin retain moisture.

The hyaluronic acid serum also contains Olay’s proprietary Amino Peptide for firming and niacinamide to brighten your skin and reduce the look of pores. Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) moisturizes and soothes your skin.

The fragrance-free lightweight serum absorbs easily and dries down without leaving your skin sticky or tacky.

Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Hydrating Gel Cream

Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Hydrating Gel Cream Moisturizer, handheld.
BEST FOR:Hydrating
KEY INGREDIENTS:Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, and Olay’s Amino Peptide
WHEN TO USE:AM and/or PM skincare routine
Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Hydrating Gel Cream

Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Hydrating Gel Cream is a daily gel-cream moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and peptides to hydrate your skin.

The moisturizer replenishes your skin’s moisture barrier and helps reduce the look of dullness and aging.

Hyaluronic acid is included for hydration, niacinamide for skin balancing, brightening, and smoothing, and peptides for multiple anti-aging benefits. The gel cream also contains panthenol to soothe your skin.

The moisturizer has a lightweight texture, a cooling effect on the skin, and sinks in quickly.

I think the words “plump” and “dewy” best describe this product, as that’s how my skin feels after using this moisturizer.

This Olay moisturizer pairs well with Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 serum but also after a retinol serum or vitamin C serum.

I think it would be great for those looking for a drugstore moisturizer that does what it says it will do: provide extended hydration to create a glowing and dewy complexion.

If you like the lightweight feel of Olay’s Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 products, you can also try their Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Eye Cream.

Best Olay Products for 40s: 5 Olay Regenerist serums side by side: Collagen Peptide 24 MAX, Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX, Hyaluronic + Peptide 24, AHA + Peptide 24, and Retinol 24 MAX.

A Note On Olay MAX Products

When shopping for Olay products, you’ll see they offer original Vitamin C + Peptide 24, Retinol + Peptide 24, and Collagen Peptide 24 products, as well as MAX versions.

The MAX versions contain a stronger concentration of active ingredients, so I chose to include the MAX versions in this post.

Remember, we don’t know the concentration of active ingredients in the products, but the MAX versions contain 2X the original concentrations of the main active ingredients.

Olay Skincare Routine For Your 40s and Beyond

Olay makes it easy for you when you are trying to build a skincare routine. They have complete product lines from cleansers to moisturizers if you want to use all the same products from any Olay skincare range.

I like to use vitamin C products in the morning and retinol products in the evening. Since Olay retinol products are so strong, you are best off using only the Retinol 24 serum OR moisturizer in your skincare routine at the same time.

Example Olay Morning Anti-Aging Skincare Routine

Example Olay Evening Anti-Aging Skincare Routine

TIP: If you want to keep things simple and use the same serum and moisturizer in both your morning and evening skincare routines, you can use products from the Vitamin C or Collagen Peptide 24 lines twice a day.

Olay Anti-Aging Ingredients

These are a few of the main over-the-counter active ingredients that I always look for to address aging skin concerns.

Vitamin C

During the day, I love to use vitamin C skincare products. Since vitamin C is an antioxidant, it helps protect your skin from environmental damage that we encounter during daylight hours.

Vitamin C also has brightening benefits, helps fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, and stimulates collagen production for smoother, firming-looking skin.

Pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) will always give you better results when compared to vitamin C derivatives, but each has its own benefits.

While pure vitamin C is more potent, vitamin C derivatives tend to be more stable and less irritating, depending on the concentration.

(The Olay products in this post contain vitamin C derivatives.)

3-O Ethyl Ascorbic Acid

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 products are formulated with the vitamin C derivative 3-O ethyl ascorbic acid.

This derivative is more stable than pure vitamin C, giving it a longer shelf life. It is soluble in water and oil, while pure vitamin C is only soluble in water.

While 3-O ethyl ascorbic acid needs an acidic pH to be effective, it doesn’t need as low of a pH as ascorbic acid, so it might be more tolerable for those with sensitive skin than some more concentrated forms of ascorbic acid.

3-O ethyl ascorbic acid converts to ascorbic acid in the skin and provides similar yet not as potent antioxidant, collagen-boosting, and brightening benefits as pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid).

Niacinamide

I always sing the praises of niacinamide because it offers your skin so many benefits, including:

  • Balances oil (sebum) production
  • Reduces the look of pores
  • Strengthens your skin barrier
  • Calms redness and reduces inflammation
  • Brightens skin tone and fades hyperpigmentation
  • Minimizes the look of wrinkles and fine lines

No wonder Olay loves this ingredient so much. I do too!

Amino Peptide

Olay’s Amino Peptide, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, is a proprietary peptide that addresses the visible signs of aging.

Also known as Matrixyl, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 has been shown in this four-month clinical study to improve wrinkle volume and depth and skin roughness.

It’s the peptide that Olay includes in many of its anti-aging products to improve wrinkles, fine lines, and skin firmness.

Lactic Acid (Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Serum and Moisturizer)

Lactic acid is a humectant and exfoliant that helps your skin attract and retain moisture while gently removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin for a brighter complexion.

Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that helps to improve cell turnover and reduce the appearance of wrinkles while also providing moisturizing benefits.

Lactic acid’s molecule size is not as small as glycolic acid, another popular AHA, so it’s not as likely to cause irritation, making it an ideal choice for those with sensitive skin.

Retinol

Retinol. Yes, the holy grail of over-the-counter anti-agers.

Retinol is a form of vitamin A that can help renew skin cells, stimulate collagen production, reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, and even out skin tone and texture.

Out of all the over-the-counter products I’ve tried, I’ve seen the most change in my skin from using retinoids.

Since retinoids can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, you should use retinoids in your evening skincare routine while always using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher sun protection daily.

For more details on incorporating retinoids into your skincare routine, please see my Guide to Drugstore Retinol.

La Roche-Posay Sunscreen Review https://www.abeautyedit.com/la-roche-posay-sunscreen-review/ https://www.abeautyedit.com/la-roche-posay-sunscreen-review/#comments Tue, 18 Apr 2023 14:34:09 +0000 https://www.abeautyedit.com/?p=20610 Navigating the selection of sunscreen on today’s market can be quite daunting. Everyone wants to protect their skin from the sun’s damaging rays, but the sheer amount of options available can be overwhelming.

Enter La Roche-Posay, a French skincare brand and trusted name in skincare for over forty years that has created an award-winning line of sunscreens specifically designed to help protect our skin from the damaging rays of the sun.

La Roche-Posay Sunscreen Review: six La Roche-Posay mineral and chemical sunscreens.

BUT…La Roche-Posay sells a lot of sunscreens, so it can be difficult to determine which one is best for you.

So I went ahead and purchased several of their best sellers, tested them, and will share my experience with each sunscreen in this La Roche-Posay sunscreen review.

This La Roche-Posay sunscreen review post contains affiliate links, and any purchases made through these links will result in a commission for me at no extra cost to you. Please read my Disclosure for additional information.

La Roche-Posay Sunscreen Review

First, a few notes about the sunscreens that I tested.

All of the La Roche-Posay sunscreens in this post are fragrance-free, oil-free, non-comedogenic, and suitable for sensitive skin.

All of the chemical sunscreens that I tried had that chemical sunscreen scent, but it was not overwhelming, and only one of the chemical sunscreens caused my skin to break out (see below).

Perhaps that is because all the chemical La Roche-Posay sunscreens that I tried are oxybenzone and octinoxate-free.

Oxybenzone and octinoxate are two common chemical filters that have a toxic effect on the marine environment, can cause skin allergies and reactions, and may even be hormone disruptors.

About my skin: I am typically a mineral sunscreen user since my skin is often sensitive to chemical sunscreen filters. My skin leans towards the oily side, especially during warm weather.

I purchased both mineral and chemical sunscreens for this review and, for the most part, was pleasantly surprised by how my skin responded to La Roche-Posay’s chemical sunscreens.

La Roche-Posay Chemical Sunscreen Reviews

The La Roche-Posay chemical sunscreens that I tried contain the following chemical filters at different concentrations:

  • Avobenzone
  • Homosalate
  • Octisalate
  • Octocrylene

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Sunscreen SPF 60

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Sunscreen SPF 60, handheld.

I was very interested in trying La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Sunscreen SPF 60 (1.7 fl. oz) since it is supposed to absorb excess oil, even when it’s hot and humid out.

The face sunscreen contains the following chemical filters:

  • 3% Avobenzone
  • 15% Homosalate
  • 5% Octisalate
  • 7% Octocrylene

La Roche-Posay’s proprietary Cell-Ox Shield Technology combines UVA/UVB sun protection along with the antioxidant Senna alata.

Senna alata, also known as Cassia alata, is a potent antioxidant and tropical leaf extract that fights free radical-induced skin damage caused by the sun that can result in premature skin aging.

Like most La Roche-Posay products, this sunscreen contains skin-soothing La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water, which contains minerals, trace elements, selenium, a skin-protective antioxidant,

Vitamin E is another antioxidant in this sunscreen that protects your skin against environmental stress.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Sunscreen SPF 60, tube behind sunscreen sampled on clear cosmetic spatula.

As noted on the tube, the sunscreen provides a dry touch after it is absorbed, and it leaves a matte finish. Its perlite and silica complex of lightweight powders controls oil and shine throughout the day.

It has a white cream texture that disappears once absorbed. The fragrance-free sunscreen is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes.

It does a great job of keeping my skin shine-free throughout the day, and it works well with makeup, too.

I do notice, though, that my skin feels a bit dry at the end of the day compared to the other La Roche-Posay chemical sunscreens that I tried, so this may not be the best choice for dry skin types.

Clear Skin Sunscreen SPF 60 hasn’t irritated my skin either, so I’m thrilled to have found a non-irritating chemical sunscreen that controls oil.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen SPF 60

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen SPF 60, handheld.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen SPF 60 (3.0 fl. oz) is a face and body sunscreen in one product.

This award-winning chemical sunscreen has a luxe, velvety texture that melts into your skin, just as the name suggests.

It is a chemical sunscreen that contains the following chemical filters:

  • 3% Avobenzone
  • 10% Homosalate
  • 5% Octisalate
  • 7% Octocrylene

It is enriched with La Roche Posay’s Cell-Ox Shield Technology that combines UVA/UVB broad-spectrum sunscreen protection with antioxidant protection from the tropical leaf extract Senna alata.

Senna alata extract protects skin cells in the upper layer of your skin against damaging free radicals caused by the sun. It also has antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant skin protective benefits.

The sunscreen milk also contains glycerin to help keep skin moisturized throughout the day, antioxidant vitamin E, and skin-protectant dimethicone.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen SPF 60, tube behind sunscreen sample on clear plastic spatula.

It is enriched with La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water sourced in France, which contains minerals, trace elements, and the antioxidant selenium.

This sunscreen has a lightweight, slightly creamy texture that spreads easily over my skin and absorbs quickly.

It is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes.

I can see why this sunscreen milk is so popular as a face and body sunscreen. It has a silky texture that melts into my skin and has a natural finish. It leaves my skin feeling soft and moisturized.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Sunscreen SPF 60

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Sunscreen SPF 60, handheld.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Sunscreen SPF 60 (1.7 fl. oz) is an award-winning liquid face sunscreen that has an ultra-light consistency and leaves a matte finish on your skin.

This chemical sunscreen contains the following UV filters:

  • 3% Avobenzone
  • 10% Homosalate
  • 5% Octisalate
  • 7% Octocrylene

Like other La Roche-Posay sunscreens, Anthelios Light Fluid Sunscreen contains La Roche Posay Cell-Ox Shield Technology.

Cell-Ox Shield combines UVA/UVB broad-spectrum sunscreen protection and antioxidant protection from Senna Alata extract, a tropical leaf extract that protects against skin-damaging free radicals caused by UV rays.

The sunscreen also contains La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water, antioxidant vitamin E, and skin protectant dimethicone. Lightweight silica powder absorbs excess oil and reduces the look of shine.

The fragrance-free sunscreen is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Sunscreen SPF 60, bottle behind sunscreen sample on clear plastic spatula.

It’s very similar to La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen SPF 60, but there are a few differences: It doesn’t contain glycerin like Melt-In Milk Sunscreen but does contain silica to control oil and shine.

It also has a thinner consistency and feels more lightweight on my skin.

This is another La Roche-Posay sunscreen ideal for oily and acne-prone skin, but doesn’t feel as drying as La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Sunscreen SPF 60, so I prefer it over Anthelios Clear Skin Sunscreen SPF 60.

Of the chemical La Riche-Posay sunscreens I’ve tried, I think this is the best sunscreen I tried (for my face).

La Roche-Posay Mineral Sunscreen Reviews

La Roche Posay Mineral Sunscreens: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50, La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 Gentle Lotion Mineral Sunscreen, and La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50.

There are only two mineral sunscreen filters approved by the FDA: titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. La Roche-Posay uses both filters in most of their mineral sunscreens.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 Gentle Lotion Mineral Sunscreen

La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 Gentle Lotion Mineral Sunscreen, handheld.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 Gentle Lotion Mineral Sunscreen (3.0 fl. oz) is a 100% mineral sunscreen formulated for both the face and body.

The sunscreen contains the following physical sunscreen filters that provide SPF 50 broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection:

  • 5% Titanium Dioxide
  • 15% Zinc Oxide

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide absorb and reflect UV rays (both UVA/ UVB) and are ideal for sensitive skin types that may be prone to irritation.

Silica powder gives the sunscreen a silky feel and a soft focus effect. Lipo-Hydroxy Acid (LHA), a derivative of salicylic acid, offers exfoliating benefits. Vitamin E provides antioxidant benefits.

This physical sunscreen contains Cell-Ox Shield technology that combines broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection with antioxidants that protect against free radical damage in the skin.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 Gentle Lotion Mineral Sunscreen, tube behind sunscreen sample on clear plastic spatula.

The non-greasy sunscreen is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes.

It has a somewhat thick, chalky texture that creates an obvious white cast (on my light skin tone) upon application.

I am happy to say that it does dissipate once absorbed, but I’m not sure how well this will work for you if you have a darker skin tone.

Due to the thicker nature of this mineral sunscreen, I will continue using this on my body only and use one of the more fluid La Roche-Posay mineral sunscreens on my face due to their more lightweight texture and feel on my skin.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50, handheld.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50 (1.7 fl. oz) is a 100% mineral sunscreen for the face that was developed for sensitive skin.

Mineral filters are much more suitable for sensitive skin than chemical filters.

It contains the following mineral filters that provide broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection:

  • 6% Titanium Dioxide
  • 5% Zinc Oxide

The thin liquid texture absorbs quickly and leaves a matte finish on your skin.

It contains Cell-Ox Shield technology combining broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with skin-protecting antioxidants.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50, bottle behind sunscreen sample on clear plastic spatula.

Vitamin E provides antioxidant benefits, while silica powder gives this sunscreen a light, velvety feel. Dimethicone helps reduce water loss and forms a protective barrier against external aggressors.

La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water offers anti-irritating properties to soothe sensitive skin.

The fragrance-free sunscreen is water-resistant for up to 40 minutes.

I find this sunscreen to be lightweight on my skin and leaves a very natural matte finish.

It does have a bit of a white cast on application, but it fades away (on my light skin tone) once the sunscreen is absorbed.

This is my favorite La Roche-Posay mineral sunscreen that I tried.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50, handheld.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50 (1.7 fl. oz) is a 100% mineral tinted face sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide to protect your skin from the sun.

The mineral filter in this sunscreen is:

  • 11% Titanium Dioxide

Like other La Roche-Posay sunscreens, this tinted sunscreen contains Cell-Ox Shield technology that combines broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection with skin-protecting antioxidants.

La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water helps soothe and refresh skin. Dimethicone forms a protective barrier on the skin’s surface, and vitamin E offers antioxidant benefits.

Silica powder helps absorb oil and contributes to the sunscreen’s matte finish. Iron oxides provide the tint.

The fragrance-free tinted sunscreen is water-resistant up to 40 minutes.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50, bottle behind sunscreen sample on clear plastic spatula.

The tinted sunscreen has a lightweight and non-greasy texture that blends easily into my skin. It’s a medium shade that is slightly too dark for my light skin tone, but I am able to lighten the shade with my foundation and makeup products.

I love that it doesn’t create any white cast, but because it only contains titanium dioxide, you don’t get as robust protection against UVA rays since titanium dioxide protects more against UVB and provides some UVA protection.

It’s a trade-off: zinc oxide, which is not in this sunscreen, provides better protection against UVA rays but contributes to the unpleasant white cast.

La Roche Posay Anthelios Sunscreen 4 Piece Sampler

La Roche Posay Anthelios Sunscreen 4 Piece Sampler box beside four sample sunscreen bottles.

If you still aren’t sure which La Roche-Posay sunscreen you want to try, Target has another option for you: this La-Roche-Posay sunscreen sampler!

Keep in mind that each sunscreen tube is very small, so you won’t get more than a use or two out of each, but they are a great way to test out the different formulas that La Roche-Posay has to offer.

This sampler includes:

  • Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV SPF 30 (0.10 fl oz.)
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Sunscreen SPF 60 (0.10 fl oz.) (reviewed above)
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50 (0.17 fl oz.) (reviewed above)
  • Anthelios UV Correct SPF 70 Daily Face Sunscreen (0.17 fl oz.)

Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer UV SPF 30 is a La Roche-Posay’s beloved Double Repair Face Moisturizer with added sunscreen protection.

Chemical filters include:

  • 3% Avobenzone
  • 5% Homosalate
  • 5% Octisalate
  • 7% Octocrylene

It takes a unique prebiotic action on the skin microbiome and restores the skin barrier in just one hour.

The moisturizer contains skin-loving ingredients like La Roche-Posay prebiotic thermal water, ceramide-3, niacinamide, and glycerin.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Correct SPF 70 Daily Face Sunscreen contains La Roche-Posay’s Cellox-B3 Shield technology plus niacinamide to help correct uneven skin tone, fine lines, and uneven skin texture.

Chemical filters include:

  • 3% Avobenzone
  • 13% Homosalate
  • 5% Octisalate
  • 10% Octocrylene

Niacinamide is an all-star multi-tasking ingredient that also reduces the look of pores, boosts collagen production for firmer-looking skin, calms redness and inflammation, and strengthens the skin barrier.

Anthelios UV Correct SPF 70 Daily Face Sunscreen was the only sunscreen that I tried that caused me to break out. Maybe it was due to the higher chemical filters in this sunscreen.

Butyloctyl Salicylate in Mineral Sunscreens

Please note that La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50 and La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50 (and many other mineral sunscreens on the market) contain butyloctyl salicylate.

Butyloctyl salicylate is a solvent and active ingredient that helps boost the SPF rating of sunscreens.

It has a similar structure as the chemical sunscreen octisalate, but butyloctyl salicylate is not approved as a chemical sunscreen by the FDA in the US. Please note this if you are allergic to salicylates.

La Roche-Posay Sunscreen Review: My Picks

As you can see from the sunscreen filters and active ingredients in this post, many La Roche-Posay sunscreens are very similar, with small differences in sunscreen concentrations.

Overall, I thought the best chemical face sunscreen was La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Sunscreen SPF 60. It has a lightweight consistency that is comfortable on my skin and didn’t irritate my skin at all.

If you want both face and body coverage, I was impressed with La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen SPF 60.

If you have an oily skin type and are looking for the best La Roche-Posay sunscreen for oily skin and acne, La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Sunscreen SPF 60 is a great choice.

If you have sensitive skin, La Roche-Posay mineral sunscreens will be your best bet. You can choose the mineral sunscreen that works best for your skin tone.

Consider the sampler to test out a few different sunscreen options if you’re unsure.

Regardless of which you choose, just don’t forget to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every day to protect your skin from sun exposure. You can pair it with a vitamin C serum for a boost in antioxidant protection.

Apply your sunscreen as the last step of your skin care routine, and your skin will thank you for it years from now!

CeraVe vs La Roche-Posay: Which is Better? https://www.abeautyedit.com/cerave-vs-la-roche-posay/ https://www.abeautyedit.com/cerave-vs-la-roche-posay/#comments Tue, 28 Mar 2023 15:31:25 +0000 https://www.abeautyedit.com/?p=20284 CeraVe and La Roche-Posay are two of the most popular drugstore skincare brands on the market, each with a loyal following of fans.

While both brands offer a range of high-quality products, they have different approaches to skincare and may be better suited for different skin types and concerns.

In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at CeraVe vs La Roche-Posay, comparing the key ingredients and benefits of several products to help you decide which brand is right for you.

Cerave vs La Roche-Posay

If you live in the US, as I do, then you have probably seen CeraVe in the skincare aisle of your local drugstore or retailer. La Roche-Posay may not be on your radar as much since it is a French pharmacy brand.

Both brands are committed to providing optimized skincare solutions for all skin types.

CeraVe is excellent for those with dry skin, as the ceramides in their products help lock in moisture and provide a protective barrier.

CeraVe’s MVE delivery system helps to ensure that the key ingredients are released slowly over time, providing a more even absorption and extended hydration.

Meanwhile, many La Roche-Posay products are ideal for those with a sensitive skin type, as their proprietary thermal spring water helps soothe inflammation and protect the skin.

La Roche-Posay is more expensive than CeraVe but offers quality and effectiveness.

Let’s take a look at several products that I’ve tested from both brands, ranging from cleansers and serums to face and body moisturizers:

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser vs La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser vs La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser.

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, formulated for normal to dry skin, is a hydrating face wash that gently removes makeup, dirt, and oil.

The hydrating cleanser is formulated with three essential ceramides that help to restore and maintain your skin’s natural barrier.

The cleanser also contains hyaluronic acid (in the salt form of sodium hyaluronate) to help draw moisture to the skin and keep it hydrated.

Moisturizing glycerin and cholesterol are also included in the cleanser to help reinforce the skin’s barrier. Tocopherol (vitamin E) helps protect your skin from environmental pollutants.

MVE Technology encapsulates and releases ingredients over time for long-lasting effects.

The cleanser is also accepted by the National Eczema Association.

The gentle non-foaming gel-cream cleanser is non-irritating, fragrance-free, and non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores or cause acne and breakouts.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser, formulated for normal to dry, sensitive skin, contains soothing actives that gently cleanse your skin of makeup, dirt, and other impurities.

This gentle face wash contains La Roche-Posay Prebiotic Thermal Water and ceramide-3 to nourish dry skin and support a healthy skin barrier. Ceramide-3 helps maintain your skin’s pH for a balanced complexion.

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, helps to reduce redness and soothe the skin. Niacinamide also balances oil production and helps brighten dull, uneven skin tone.

This cleanser is fragrance-free, soap-free, sulfate-free, paraben-free, oil-free, and non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores.

The cream formula hydrates and moisturizes, leaving your skin soft and smooth, never dry or tight.

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser vs La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Facial Cleanser

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser vs La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Facial Cleanser.

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser, formulated for normal to oily skin, is a foaming face wash that deeply cleanses your skin and removes dirt, makeup, and oil while supporting a healthy skin barrier.

The cleanser contains CeraVe’s three essential ceramides (Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP), which are lipids that help to replenish and lock in moisture while maintaining your skin’s protective moisture barrier.

Think of ceramides as the glue that holds skin cells together. Decreased ceramide levels have been linked to skin conditions like atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, so replenishing ceramides are key for keeping your skin hydrated.

The foam cleanser also contains hyaluronic acid in its salt form of sodium hyaluronate to attract and hold moisture in the skin.

Cholesterol is another lipid included in the cleanser to help support the skin’s moisture levels.

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is a skin-restoring ingredient that helps to reduce redness and soothe the skin while balancing sebum (oil) production and reducing the look of pores.

Niacinamide also helps even out uneven skin tone and brightens dull skin.

Like CeraVe’s other products, this cleanser uses CeraVe’s proprietary MVE technology that releases ingredients slowly over time for all-day hydration.

This foaming face wash is fragrance-free, suitable for sensitive skin, and non-comedogenic, so you don’t have to worry about it clogging your pores.

NOTE: If you have oily or acne-prone skin, CeraVe offers additional cleansers formulated for your skin type:

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Facial Cleanser

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Facial Cleanser

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Facial Cleanser, formulated for normal to oily, sensitive skin, is a gentle face wash that removes dirt, makeup, oil, and other impurities while protecting your skin’s pH and moisture barrier.

The cleanser contains ceramide NP, like CeraVe, to support a healthy skin barrier. This skin-identical lipid helps protect the skin from environmental aggressors and retain moisture by forming a protective barrier on the skin’s surface.

The cleanser also contains La Roche-Posay Prebiotic Thermal Water, a mineral and antioxidant-rich spring water that helps soothe and protect the skin from environmental aggressors.

Niacinamide, an anti-inflammatory and brightening vitamin that helps fade hyperpigmentation and dark spots, also helps boost collagen production for firmer skin.

This face wash is fragrance-free, oil-free, non-comedogenic, soap-free, paraben-free, and soap-free. It is also suitable for sensitive skin.

You only need a small amount to get a rich, creamy lather.

Like CeraVe, La Roche-Posay offers additional cleansers for oily, acne-prone skin:

CeraVe Hyaluronic Acid Serum

CeraVe Hyaluronic Acid Serum, handheld.

Cerave Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a gel-cream serum formulated with hyaluronic acid in the salt form of sodium hyaluronate.

Compared to hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate has a smaller molecular size and can be absorbed deeper into the skin.

This serum also contains three essential ceramides (ceramide NP, ceramide AP, and ceramide EOP), which are moisturizing lipids that support a healthy skin barrier.

Glycerin acts as a humectant to attract moisture, while pro-vitamin B5 (panthenol) soothes and calms the skin and helps it retain moisture.

The serum also contains CeraVe’s proprietary MVE Technology, which helps release moisturizing ingredients slowly for extended hydration.

The serum is non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores and is fragrance-free and paraben-free.

The thick serum almost feels like a moisturizing lotion. It absorbs quickly and leaves the skin soft, smooth, and hydrated.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum, handheld.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum is formulated with hyaluronic acid to hydrate your skin and replenish lost moisture.

This serum is perfect for you if you deal with the signs of aging, like fine lines and loss of skin elasticity and volume.

The hyaluronic serum contains two forms of hyaluronic acid: sodium hyaluronate and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, which has been broken down into smaller molecules.

Sodium hyaluronate has a low molecular weight and can penetrate deeper into the skin to deliver more intense hydration, while hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid helps to bind moisture to the skin’s surface.

The serum also contains pro-vitamin B5 (panthenol) to help reduce inflammation and boost hydration levels. Glycerin is another humectant in the serum that helps keep your skin soft and smooth.

Madecassoside from the Centella asiatica plant soothes the skin and helps reduce redness and irritation. It also has wound-healing and antioxidant properties.

This rich serum absorbs quickly, has a noticeable fresh fragrance, and is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum is formulated with 10% pure l-ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C), three essential ceramides, hyaluronic acid in its salt form of sodium hyaluronate, plus vitamin B5.

Vitamin C provides many skin benefits, like antioxidant protection from UV rays (sun damage) and environmental factors like pollution. It also helps brighten the skin and support an even skin tone while reducing hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

Three essential ceramides (ceramide NP, ceramide AP, and ceramide EOP) strengthen and restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier.

Glycerin moisturizes, and pro-vitamin B5, also called panthenol, helps reduce inflammation and soothe the skin.

The serum also contains CeraVe’s proprietary MVE Technology that delivers key ingredients over time for extended hydration for up to 24 hours.

It has a light, silky and non-greasy feel that absorbs quickly without leaving any residue. It works well when applied under makeup, too.

This CeraVe vitamin C serum is fragrance-free, paraben-free, is non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores or cause breakouts. Also, it comes in packaging that helps protect against oxidation.

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum, handheld.

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum is an anti-aging serum formulated to smooth wrinkles and fine lines and improve skin texture, tone, and radiance.

The serum contains a 10% concentration of pure vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid or l-ascorbic acid.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps brighten and even out skin tone, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and stimulates collagen production for a firmer, more youthful-looking complexion.

The serum also contains salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that exfoliates your skin, lifts away dead skin cells, and unclogs pores. It helps prevent acne, controls excess oil production, and refines the look of pores.

Salicylic acid also reduces the appearance of blackheads and whiteheads and has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe redness and irritation. It’s excellent for acne-prone and oily skin.

The serum also contains a synthetic dipeptide known for its calming effect and ability to soothe sensitive skin, reducing skin redness and irritation.

Two forms of hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid) plus glycerin hydrate and moisturize your skin.

La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water, sourced from the town of La Roche-Posay in France, contains minerals, trace elements, and skin-protective antioxidants.

The serum is oil-free and non-comedogenic, and suitable for sensitive skin.

CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum vs La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum.

CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum

CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum, handheld.

CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum is formulated to address the visible signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines, and skin texture.

The serum contains encapsulated retinol, which is released slowly over time for maximum efficacy.

Retinol is a form of vitamin A that helps to reduce wrinkles, improve skin texture and tone, and minimize discoloration by boosting collagen production and increasing cell turnover for improved skin clarity.

Like other CeraVe products, this CeraVe retinol serum contains Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, and three essential ceramides that help restore the protective skin barrier.

Niacinamide brightens, calms redness and inflammation, and smoothes fine lines and wrinkles.

Cholesterol is a lipid and a key component of healthy skin that helps to restore the skin’s protective barrier and lock in moisture.

Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is a form of hyaluronic acid that is a little more easily absorbed than regular HA and helps hydrate the skin. Shea butter and glycerin moisturize and nourish the skin.

The serum contains CeraVe MVE Technology (MultiVesicular Emulsion technology). This patented delivery system helps deliver moisturizing ingredients slowly over time, so they can deeply penetrate the skin.

How Much Retinol Is In CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum?

Unfortunately, this CeraVe does not disclose the concentration of retinol in the serum.

From personal experience, I don’t think it’s a high concentration since it doesn’t irritate my somewhat sensitive skin. I think it’s a great starter retinol serum for beginners.

La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum

La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum

It pairs concentrated pure retinol with vitamin B3 (niacinamide) to tackle these signs of aging while also being suitable for sensitive skin.

The gradual release retinol in the formula helps boost cell turnover for improved radiance and a reduction in the look of wrinkles and fine lines.

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) helps balance the skin’s natural oil production, inhibits melanin (pigment) production for a brighter complexion, and supports a healthy skin barrier.

Hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate) hydrates and plumps the skin while retaining moisture.

The serum also contains La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water, which contains minerals and antioxidants to help replenish the skin.

The serum is paraben-free, oil-free, and non-comedogenic (it won’t clog your pores).

Please note that there is added fragrance in this retinol serum.

How Much Retinol Is In La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum?

Like CeraVe, La Roche-Posay doesn’t disclose the amount of retinol in the serum.

But since they note that the serum is suitable for sensitive skin, I don’t think the concentration is very high. I don’t notice any irritation when using this serum.

About CeraVe

CeraVe was founded in 2005 when experts noticed that skin conditions like dry skin, acne, eczema, and psoriasis all share the same quality – a compromised skin barrier.

CeraVe set out to develop products with dermatologists that contain three essential ceramides and a patented delivery system (MVE Technology) to replenish the skin’s natural protective moisture barrier.

CeraVe uses a unique combination of three skin-identical ceramides in their skin care products: Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, and Ceramide EOP. These ceramides support the skin barrier and help the skin retain moisture, making their products perfect for dry skin.

CeraVe’s products address skin concerns like acne, eczema, psoriasis, aging, and itchy and dry skin.

About La Roche-Posay

La Roche-Posay is a French pharmacy brand that has been around for over 40 years, as it was founded in 1975.

The brand is known for its commitment to research and innovation, works closely with dermatologists, and its mission is a better life for sensitive skin.

La Roche-Posay’s signature ingredient is La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water, which helps to soothe and replenish the skin.

La Roche-Posay features a range of ingredients in its dermatological skincare lines that target aging (Hyalu B5), sun-sensitive (Anthelios), oily acne-prone (Effaclar), and sensitive allergy-prone skin (Toleriane).

The Bottom Line

Is La Roche Posay better than Cerave? Or is CeraVe the better brand? Each brand has its own strengths.

CeraVe is excellent for treating dry skin and restoring the skin’s protective barrier, while La Roche-Posay’s products are ideal for sensitive skin.

CeraVe and La Roche-Posay offer a complete range of skin care solutions formulated with high-quality ingredients.

While La Roche-Posay is more expensive than CeraVe, both brands are affordable and effective.

This hyaluronic acid serum from the French pharmacy brand La Roche-Posay is formulated with ingredients that work together to hydrate and plump your skin.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum, handheld.

I purchased it and put it to the test, so in this La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum review, I’ll share my thoughts on this hyaluronic acid serum and whether or not I think it’s worth buying.

This post contains affiliate links, and any purchases made through these links will result in a commission for me at no extra cost to you. Please read my Disclosure for additional information.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum

There is no shortage of hyaluronic acid serums available today, priced at just a few dollars to over $300 (!!!). The over $300 serum I’m referring to is this one, in case you were wondering. I tried it, and while it’s nice, it’s not so nice that I’d part with $320.

The good news is that you don’t have to spend so much money to get an effective hydrating serum.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum review.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum is formulated to repair and plump your skin and, luckily, isn’t $300.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum contains concentrated pure hyaluronic acid in two different molecular weights to hydrate your skin.

The serum also contains pro-vitamin B5 (panthenol), an active ingredient that helps to strengthen your skin’s barrier function, helping it to retain moisture and increase its ability to heal itself.

Antioxidant-rich La Roche-Posay thermal spa water helps to protect your skin from oxidative stress.

This La Roche-Posay skincare product is a good choice for those pesky signs of aging, like fine lines and loss of volume and elasticity.

The serum is oil-free, paraben-free, and non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores. The serum is even suitable for sensitive skin.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum Key Ingredients

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum, flatlay.

Glycerin: Glycerin is a humectant commonly used in skincare products that helps to draw water into your skin. La Roche-Posay’s glycerin is derived from vegetable sources.

Panthenol: Also known as pro-vitamin B5, panthenol helps to reduce inflammation and irritation. It also helps skin retain moisture, which is why it’s often used in serums and moisturizers.

Madecassoside: Madecassoside is derived from the Centella asiatica plant, which has anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to soothe and repair your skin.

Sodium Hyaluronate: A salt form of hyaluronic acid that acts like a sponge and draws moisture into your skin. Hyaluronic acid helps plump your skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Sodium hyaluronate has a lower molecular weight than hyaluronic acid, which allows it to absorb deeper into your skin.

Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid: A form of hyaluronic acid that has been broken down into smaller particles. It works on the surface of your skin to maintain moisture and hydration.

La Roche-Posay Prebiotic Thermal Water: Sourced from the town of La Roche-Posay in France, this thermal water found in most La Roche-Posay products, contains natural minerals, trace elements, and antioxidants that help to protect your skin from environmental aggressors.

Dimethicone: This is a silicone-based polymer that helps to create a protective barrier on your skin. It also smooths and softens your skin.

Tocopherol: Tocopherol is a form of vitamin E that helps to protect your skin against free radical damage.

How Much Hyaluronic Acid Is In La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum?

I reached out to La Roche-Posay about the percentage of hyaluronic acid in the serum since it isn’t noted anywhere on the bottle, packaging, or in the product description online.

They responded that they don’t disclose the amount of hyaluronic acid in the serum, as it is proprietary information.

It’s hard to guess the concentration by looking at the ingredient list, which lists ingredients in order of concentration from highest to lowest.

Sodium hyaluronate is ingredient 12 out of 22 total ingredients, and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is 15 out of 22.

Some other hyaluronic acid serums I’ve listed below contain forms of HA in the top 5 ingredients. So I’m guessing the La Roche-Posay HA concentration isn’t as high as others like The Ordinary or The Inkey List.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum Review

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum, open bottle with dropper applicator.

I’m always looking for products that will hydrate and plump up my skin during the colder weather months, which is when I tested La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum.

The first thing I noticed after opening the bottle was the fragrance. The serum contains a noticeable fresh, clean scent.

The good news (for me, at least) is that the scent doesn’t linger and fades away quickly after applying the serum.

The serum is a cloudy opaque shade (the bottle is blue, but the serum isn’t).

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum, flatlay of bottle next to drop of serum sampled on hand.

The serum has a thick texture that feels very moisturizing on my skin. Even though it has a thicker consistency and is a little sticky on application, it doesn’t leave my skin feeling tacky once absorbed.

I really like the inclusion of two forms of hyaluronic acid in the serum. Since sodium hyaluronate and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid have different molecular weights, they hydrate at different layers of my skin for improved hydration.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum, flatlay of bottle next to sample absorbed into hand.

It works well under makeup and leaves my skin plump throughout the day with a nice glow, as you can see from the image above after it is absorbed into my skin.

This serum is thicker and richer than some other hyaluronic acid serums. It provides long-lasting hydration, so I think this would be a great choice if you have dry skin or are constantly struggling with dehydration and tight, flaky skin.

La Roche-Posay Hyaluronic Acid Serum Drawbacks

I imagine the fragrance may be too much for some, as it is pretty strong.

I don’t love the dropper that comes with the serum and would prefer a more tapered applicator or a pump bottle.

Since the serum has a somewhat thick texture, it sticks to the sides of the dropper, which can drip and get messy.

While the HA concentration isn’t disclosed, the concentration doesn’t appear to be as high as some other HA serums, like the 2% serums listed below.

While the serum is affordable, it’s more expensive than some other drugstore hyaluronic acid serums.

How To Use La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum

After cleansing your face, La Roche-Posay instructs you to fill the dropper with serum and apply 3-4 drops in the morning and/or evening on your face and neck.

La Roche-Posay notes that the serum can be used alone or under a moisturizer, but I always recommend using a moisturizer twice a day since a moisturizer will lock in hydration and help prevent dehydration.

Also, be sure to use the serum in conjunction with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher during your morning skincare routine.

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum Alternatives

If this hyaluronic acid serum from La Roche-Posay isn’t a good fit for you, there are plenty of other options.

Here are a few affordable serums that contain hyaluronic acid to consider:

The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid Serum

The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid, handheld.

The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a best-selling hyaluronic acid serum formulated with 2% multi-molecular hyaluronic acid. Multi-molecular means multiple molecular weights.

The serum contains both sodium hyaluronate, the salt form of HA, plus hyaluronic acid.

The serum also contains Matrixyl 3000 peptide, which is the peptide duo Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1.

These peptides work together to help boost collagen production and smooth the look of wrinkles and fine lines.

The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid, flatlay of bottle next to drop of serum sampled on hand.

The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid serum is super lightweight but still provides excellent hydration.

I’ve gone through many bottles of this HA serum thanks to the low price and added anti-aging benefits from Matrixyl 3000, which makes it great for mature skin.

I love that it isn’t sticky or tacky and works well with makeup and other skin care products.

L’Oreal also includes HEPES in the serum. HEPES is a patented ingredient that promotes enzyme activity that breaks down proteins and enzymes, which supports cell turnover for smoother and softer skin.

L'Oréal Revitalift 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum, open bottle with dropper applicator.

This is one of the thinnest, most lightweight HA serums I’ve tried.

Suitable for sensitive skin, the fragrance-free serum is hydrating and plumping.

CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Serum

CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Serum

CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Serum, formulated for normal to dry skin, contains hyaluronic acid in the form of sodium hyaluronate to hydrate your skin’s surface while retaining moisture for a smoother, plumper complexion.

The serum contains three essential ceramides that help nourish and restore your skin’s natural protective barrier. This prevents transepidermal water loss, which can lead to dehydration and signs of aging.

Panthenol soothes and moisturizes, while cholesterol helps replenish your skin’s natural surface lipids.

CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Serum, bottle next to sample of serum on hand.

The serum contains CeraVe’s proprietary MVE Technology that encapsulates ceramides and delivers long-lasting hydration throughout the day.

The light and thin texture absorbs quickly into my skin without any greasy residue.

The stand-out quality of this CeraVe serum is that it is very thick with a gel-cream texture that binds moisture for up to 24 hours.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 contains low-, medium-, and high-weight hyaluronic acid molecules in the form of sodium hyaluronate and sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer.

Sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer is a cross-linked version of hyaluronic acid that forms a mesh-like network when applied to your skin, helping it retain moisture for longer periods of time.

Sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer is supposed to be able to bid five times more water than regular HA.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, open bottle with dropper.

This The Ordinary serum also contains panthenol, like La Roche-Posay, to nourish and soothe the skin.

It’s excellent for flaky, dull skin needing hydration thanks to its high HA concentration. (Yes, 2% is a high concentration of HA!)

I love the very nourishing formula and the super low price!

Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Serum

Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Serum

Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Serum is a fragrance-free serum formulated with sodium hyaluronate to plump fine lines and wrinkles and replenish dehydrated or dry skin.

The serum also contains Olay’s favorite ingredient, niacinamide.

Also one of my favorite skincare ingredients, niacinamide strengthens your skin barrier, boosts collagen production for smoother, firmer skin, helps balance oil production, reduces redness, and brightens skin.

A true multi-tasker!

Olay Hyaluronic + Peptide 24 Serum, open bottle with dropper applicator.

The serum contains Olay’s Amino Peptide (palmitoyl pentapeptide-4), which helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Panthenol soothes skin irritation.

The texture of this serum is very silky due to the dimethicone (silicone) in the formula. It leaves my skin very moisturized and super soft.

For a comparison of La Roche-Posay hyaluronic acid serum with The Ordinary, please see my post: La Roche Posay Hyalu B5 vs The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid.

The Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is one of the most popular skincare ingredients, and for good reason. It has several skincare benefits, including:

  • Hydrates and Plumps your Skin: Hyaluronic acid helps to retain moisture in your skin and increases its hydration levels, resulting in a plump and dewy look.
  • Reduces the Appearance of Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Hyaluronic acid helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by filling in creases and temporarily smoothing out the skin’s surface.
  • Improves Skin Elasticity: Hyaluronic acid helps to improve skin elasticity, allowing it to bounce back into shape and be more resilient.

The Bottom Line

There is no shortage of hyaluronic acid serums on the market.

So what makes La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum stand out from the crowd?

By combining two different forms of hyaluronic acid, the serum helps draw in and lock in moisture at multiple layers of your skin.

Its formula is packed with other beneficial ingredients like pro-vitamin B5 and La Roche-Posay’s thermal spa water that help nourish your skin.

Plus, it’s suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Just remember that it does contain a noticeable fragrance.

La Roche-Posay’s Vitamin C10 Serum is no exception. It’s a multi-benefit serum that helps to brighten, smooth, and protect your skin.

Today, I’ll share my honest thoughts and experience with the serum in this La Roche-Posay Vitamin C Serum review. We’ll discuss ingredients, effectiveness, and overall performance.

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C10 Serum, handheld.

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C Serum

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum is an anti-aging face and neck serum formulated to soften wrinkles and fine lines, smooth skin texture and tone, and improve skin radiance.

The serum contains a 10% concentration of pure vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid or l-ascorbic acid.

Vitamin C is known for three main benefits that make it so popular:

  1. Brightening: Vitamin C brightens skin by reducing dark spots and uneven skin tone. Vitamin C inhibits melanin production, the pigment responsible for skin hyperpigmentation and dark spots.
  2. Anti-Aging/Wrinkle Fighting: Vitamin C helps reduce and even out wrinkles and fine lines since it boosts collagen production, which helps keep skin firm and bouncy.
  3. Antioxidant Protection: Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from environmental stressors, keeping your skin looking smooth and healthy.

The serum is non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores and cause acne or breakouts.

La Roche Posay notes that this vitamin C serum is suitable for sensitive skin.

Pure Vitamin C Drawbacks

Of course, with the benefits of vitamin C come the drawbacks.

Pure vitamin C at a high concentration, often over 10%, can potentially irritate some skin types and cause dryness and flaky skin.

Pure vitamin C is also notoriously unstable and can quickly degrade and oxidize when exposed to light, heat, and air, which can reduce its effectiveness.

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum Key Ingredients

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C10 Serum, open bottle with dropper applicator.

10% Pure Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): This hero ingredient and powerful antioxidant helps brighten and even out skin tone, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and stimulates collagen production for firmer, more youthful-looking skin.

Ascorbic acid also protects against damaging free radicals and improves skin texture and radiance.

Salicylic Acid: This beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) exfoliates your skin and unclogs pores to prevent acne, controls excess oil production, and refines the look of pores.

Salicylic acid also reduces the appearance of blackheads and whiteheads and has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe redness and irritation. It’s excellent for acne-prone and oily skin.

Neurosensine: This synthetic dipeptide is known for its calming effect and ability to soothe sensitive skin, reducing skin redness and irritation.

Glycerin (derived from vegetable sources): This humectant attracts and retains moisture in the skin, helping to prevent dryness and dehydration while improving skin elasticity and smoothness.

Glycerin also enhances the skin’s natural barrier function, providing a protective layer that helps shield the skin from environmental stressors.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA): This hydrating active ingredient attracts and retains moisture, providing deep hydration for plump, dewy skin. It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and improves skin texture and radiance.

La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water: This spring water, sourced from the town of La Roche-Posay in France, contains minerals and trace elements, including a high concentration of selenium, a skin-protective antioxidant.

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C Serum Review

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C10 Serum, flatlay with capped bottle and unused dropper.

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum is packaged to protect the unstable vitamin C in the serum. The bottle has a screw cap as a lid, and a dropper comes separately in the box to keep air out of the bottle before you open it for the first time.

The first thing I noticed when opening the bottle was the scent. It is a STRONG scent. It smells fresh and clean.

The scent started growing on me after using it a few times, and I am happy to report that the fragrance dissipates after it absorbs into my skin.

It has a thick consistency that doesn’t feel tacky or sticky on my skin. It also works well with other skincare products and under makeup, too.

While they don’t disclose the amount of salicylic acid in the serum, I think it is helping keep my skin clear and minimizing those pesky breakouts.

In fact, I think the inclusion of salicylic acid is one of the stand-out qualities of this serum, as this should appeal to acne-prone skin.

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C10 Serum, open bottle with dropper applicator.

I like the 10% vitamin C concentration, as it is concentrated enough to be effective but not too concentrated to irritate my somewhat sensitive skin.

I haven’t noticed any brightening benefits, but I’ll continue to use this during the day for its antioxidant protection.

If you don’t mind the strong fragrance, this serum could be a great choice for antioxidant protection, brightening, and anti-aging benefits.

It’s also a great choice if you have sensitive or dry skin or are sensitive to strong vitamin C serums with higher ascorbic acid concentrations (over 10%).

How To Use La Roche-Posay Vitamin C Serum

Directions indicate that the serum should be applied in your morning skincare routine.

The serum comes with a dropper applicator. Dispense a few drops to cover your face and neck.

I like using vitamin C products in my morning routine because it helps protect my skin from environmental stressors during the day.

Also, be sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from UV rays during the day.

Directions also note that pure vitamin C can react with contact with the air, causing the serum to turn yellow. They note that the serum is still effective.

From my experience, for best results, it’s best to use pure vitamin C serums within a few months of opening.

As with any new skincare product, it is a good idea to patch test before using this serum for the first time to avoid an adverse initial reaction.

Drugstore Alternatives to La Roche-Posay Vitamin C10 Serum

If you are looking for a different texture, type, or concentration of vitamin C, or if this La Roche-Posay serum doesn’t work for you, there are many affordable drugstore options.

L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives Pure Vitamin C Serum

L’Oreal Revitalift Derm Intensives Vitamin C Serum

From sister brand L’Oreal (both La Roche-Posay and L’Oreal are owned by the L’Oreal Group) comes L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives Pure Vitamin C Serum.

Like La Roche-Posay’s vitamin C serum, L’Oreal’s Revitalift vitamin C serum contains 10% pure vitamin C.

Unlike La Roche-Posay, this vitamin C serum is fragrance-free.

It’s formulated to improve skin radiance, reduce wrinkles and support a more visibly even skin tone.

The serum also contains hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, a low molecular weight hyaluronic acid that acts like a sponge and draws water to the skin for a more hydrated, plump complexion.

The serum has a lightweight, non-greasy texture that leaves your skin feeling very soft and smooth, thanks to the silicone (dimethicone) in the formula.

The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2%

The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2%

If dullness is a main skin concern, then The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% could be a great choice for you.

The serum is formulated with two well-known skin brighteners: ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C) and alpha arbutin.

This water-free serum uses 8% pure vitamin C combined with a 2% concentration of alpha arbutin, a natural antioxidant and skin-brightening agent.

Found naturally in the bearberry plant, alpha arbutin is a derivative of skin-lightener hydroquinone, which helps reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and acne scars.

The Ordinary’s formula only contains three ingredients: propanediol, ascorbic acid, and alpha-arbutin.

Propanediol is a solvent and moisturizer that gives the serum a somewhat oily feel upon application. This oily feeling goes away once the serum is absorbed.

More Pure Vitamin C Products From The Ordinary

The Ordinary 100% L-Ascorbic Acid Powder

For a personalized dose of pure vitamin C, you can mix The Ordinary 100% L-Ascorbic Acid Powder with a serum, cream, or moisturizer in your skincare routine. (This one’s super affordable!)

Although it takes a little extra effort and planning to ensure you use it correctly, this vitamin C powder is an excellent option if you like to DIY your skin care products and customize your routine to your skin’s needs.

The Ordinary also offers two highly concentrated potent vitamin C suspensions: The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% and The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 30% in Silicone.

These water-free formulas have thicker textures and potent vitamin C concentrations, so they may not be the best choice for sensitive skin.

CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum

CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum

CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum contains 10% pure vitamin C along with CeraVe’s signature active ingredients: three essential ceramides (Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP) to strengthen your skin’s moisture barrier.

The serum brightens, smooths fine lines, and reduces the look of dark spots and uneven skin tone.

Sodium hyaluronate (the salt form of hyaluronic acid) hydrates and nourishes your skin, while panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) soothes with its anti-inflammatory benefits. Cholesterol is a lipid that moisturizes your skin.

The serum is formulated with CeraVe’s MVE Technology, which offers a slow release of ceramides for continuous hydration.

This vitamin C serum is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It’s fragrance-free, paraben-free, and non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores.

Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum

Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum, handheld.

If you are looking for an inexpensive yet strong, pure vitamin C serum, Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum is one of the best vitamin C serums.

It contains a 20% concentration of pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) to boost collagen production, improve skin tone, promote healthy cell turnover, and provide antioxidant protection.

The serum also contains vitamin E (tocopherol) and ferulic acid, a potent antioxidant.

Clinical studies have shown that ferulic acid stabilizes and doubles the photoprotection of vitamins C and E.

In other words, ferulic acid improves the effectiveness of vitamins C and E in protecting the skin from sun damage.

Suitable for all skin types, this Timeless serum is often considered an affordable alternative to best-selling but very pricey SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic vitamin C serum. SkinCeuticals contains a 15% concentration of pure vitamin C, as well as vitamin E and ferulic acid.

NOTE: Timeless also offers a 10% Vitamin C Serum with ferulic acid and vitamin E.

Vitamin C Derivative Alternatives

If pure vitamin C is too strong for your skin, or if you want a more stable serum, consider a vitamin C derivative serum.

There are many vitamin C derivates on the market, including ascorbyl glucoside, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, and sodium ascorbyl phosphate, among others.

These derivatives are formulated at a higher pH closer to our skin’s natural pH than pure vitamin C. (Pure vitamin C should be formulated at a pH of under 3.5 for it to be most effective).

Vitamin C derivatives tend to cause less irritation, redness, and dryness than pure vitamin C. Vitamin C derivatives also tend to be more stable than pure vitamin C.

The Ordinary Vitamin C Derivatives

The Ordinary Vitamin C Derivatives: Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F, and Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution.

The Ordinary offers four vitamin C derivatives:

Each of these serums has its own benefits. For more details on all The Ordinary vitamin C products, please see my The Ordinary vitamin C guide.

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Serum

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Brightening Serum

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Serum is formulated with the derivative 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid (also called ethyl ascorbic acid) to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

The serum also contains Olay’s Amino Peptide, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, which helps boost collagen production and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

Olay’s favorite ingredient, niacinamide (vitamin B3), is included to brighten skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots.

Lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), is also included in the serum. Lactic acid helps exfoliate the skin and gently sweep away dead skin cells.

Please note there is added fragrance in this serum.

NOTE: If you want a supercharged Olay vitamin C serum, you can try Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Serum, which contains 2X the peptides vs the original Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Serum.

The Bottom Line

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C10 Serum is an excellent option if you want a pure vitamin C serum with a mid-range vitamin C concentration supplemented with acne-busting salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid, and other beneficial ingredients.

I think it’s a great choice for acne-prone or oily skin types due to the inclusion of salicylic acid. A true multi-tasker!

Aveeno vs CeraVe: cleansers, lotions, baby lotions and daily face moisturizers.

But what distinguishes one from the other? In this Aveeno vs CeraVe comparison, we’ll look at several products from each brand to help you determine which is better for your skin.

Aveeno vs CeraVe

There are a few main differences between Aveeno and CeraVe skin care products.

Many Aveeno products are formulated with oat and soy to help soothe and moisturize dry and sensitive skin.

CeraVe, on the other hand, uses three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid to restore and preserve the skin’s protective barrier.

All CeraVe products are fragrance-free, while some Aveeno products contain fragrance.

While Aveeno has been around longer than CeraVe (Aveeno was founded in 1945 vs CeraVe’s launch in 2005), both brands take a science-backed approach to skincare and formulate their products to be gentle on your skin.

Aveeno Calm + Restore Gentle Nourishing Oat Cleanser vs CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Aveeno Calm + Restore Gentle Nourishing Oat Cleanser vs CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser.

We’ll start this Aveeno vs CeraVe comparison with two gentle non-foaming cleansers:

Aveeno Calm + Restore Gentle Nourishing Oat Cleanser

Aveeno Calm + Restore Gentle Nourishing Oat Cleanser

Aveeno Calm + Restore Gentle Nourishing Oat Cleanser is a milky gel-cream cleanser formulated for sensitive skin.

It gently removes dirt, makeup, oil, and impurities while leaving your skin feeling hydrated, soft, and supple.

Aveeno’s oat formula (Avena sativa (oat) kernel flour) hydrates your skin while preserving your skin’s moisture barrier.

Chrysanthemum parthenium (feverfew) flower/leaf/stem juice derived from the Wild Chamomile plant is a potent skin-protective antioxidant that moisturizes your skin.

Sodium hyaluronate, a sodium salt derived from hyaluronic acid, helps to keep your skin hydrated by binding water in the skin’s upper layers while glycerin moisturizes.

The fragrance-free cleanser does not foam and is even suitable for sensitive skin. It’s also non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores.

This oat cleanser is formulated without parabens, phthalates, dyes, or alcohol.

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is designed to maintain optimal moisture balance in the skin while preserving its natural oils.

This gel cream cleanser features a blend of essential ceramides, Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, and Ceramide EOP, which help to strengthen your skin’s protective barrier.

The face wash also contains glycerin for moisture and hyaluronic acid in the form of sodium hyaluronate to aid in moisture retention.

Formulated for those with normal to dry skin, the cleanser utilizes CeraVe’s MVE Technology to gradually release its nourishing ingredients, including encapsulated ceramides, for prolonged hydration.

This gentle, fragrance-free cleanser is recognized by the National Eczema Association as non-irritating and suitable for sensitive skin.

Plus, it’s non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t block pores and cause blemishes.

The cleanser boasts a lightweight gel-cream texture that does not produce lather, providing a refreshing and hydrating experience for the skin.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser vs CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser

Aveeno Positively Radiant Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser vs CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser.

Both brands have multiple products formulated for acne-prone skin. The following foaming cleansers contain salicylic acid to target acne and breakouts.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser

Aveeno Positively Radiant Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser, handheld.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser is a foaming cleanser formulated for acne-prone skin that contains 0.5% salicylic acid plus soy extracts to improve skin tone and texture for a brighter complexion.

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that helps clear away dirt and excess oils from the skin while also helping to reduce redness and inflammation.

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it can penetrate deeper into the pores to clear away oil and debris while helping reduce the appearance of acne.

Soy extract helps to reduce the appearance of discoloration and blotchiness while also helping to even out skin tone.

This oil-free acne facial cleanser has a pump that dispenses a lightweight foam that is gentle enough for daily use.

It’s formulated without dyes, parabens, soap, oil, or sulfates and is non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores.

Please note there is an added fresh fragrance in this cleanser.

NOTE: If you want a more potent salicylic acid cleanser from Aveeno, they offer Clear Complexion Cream Cleanser With Salicylic Acid, which contains a 2% salicylic acid concentration.

CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser

CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser

CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser contains 2% salicylic acid and has a gel-to-foam texture.

This acne face wash gently exfoliates the skin, removing excess dirt, oil, and dead skin cells to help keep pores clear.

The salicylic acid cleanser helps reduce blackheads and the look of pores while soothing redness and inflammation. It also contains purifying Hectorite clay to absorb excess oil.

The cleanser contains CeraVe’s Oil-Absorbing Technology to reduce visible shine, which is excellent for oily skin types.

It is enriched with three essential ceramides to support a healthy skin barrier and niacinamide to help balance sebum production and soothe skin.

Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is included in the formula to help the skin retain moisture.

The cleanser is fragrance-free and non-comedogenic (it won’t clog your pores).

Aveeno contains soy extract for brightening, while CeraVe contains niacinamide to brighten and balance oil production, plus hyaluronic acid for hydration and ceramides to strengthen your skin barrier.

CeraVe’s formula contains more concentrated acne-fighting ingredients than Aveeno.

Next, we move onto lightweight body lotions that can be used daily for softer, more nourished skin:

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion is Aveeno’s best-selling body lotion that contains a prebiotic oat formula that nourishes dry skin.

Aveeno’s prebiotic oat formula offers prebiotic benefits to support a healthy skin microbiome. It also provides soothing benefits and strengthens the skin barrier.

Glycerin moisturizes and softens the skin, while petrolatum creates a protective barrier to help prevent moisture loss.

This Aveeno moisturizing lotion helps soothe chafed, chapped, or cracked skin and helps protect against the effects of cold weather and wind. It’s great for irritated, itchy skin, too.

The fragrance-free lightweight, creamy lotion provides up to 24 hours of hydration.

The non-greasy moisturizer is ideal for dry skin. It’s also non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores.

If you wonder, “Can I use Aveeno lotion on my face?” I reached out to Aveeno to find out. They responded that it is only intended for the body and they don’t recommend it for the face.

CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion

CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion

CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion is the ideal lightweight solution for normal to dry skin seeking a nourishing daily moisturizer.

This silky lotion is packed with sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid in its salt form) and three essential ceramides that work together to hydrate and restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier.

Thanks to CeraVe’s MVE Technology, this oil-free moisturizer provides efficient and long-lasting hydration throughout the day by encapsulating ceramides and slowly releasing them over time.

This lotion has been accepted by the National Eczema Association, making it an excellent choice for those with eczema-prone skin.

It’s also fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and fast-absorbing, providing 24-hour hydration without any greasiness.

CeraVe is oil-free and uses hyaluronic acid and ceramides to hydrate and restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier.

CeraVe is accepted by the National Eczema Association and is suitable for those with eczema-prone skin, but Aveeno is not.

CeraVe can be used as both a face and body lotion.

Aveeno Skin Relief Moisture Repair Cream

Aveeno Skin Relief Moisture Repair Cream is formulated to provide intense moisture to very dry skin.

The cream contains Aveeno’s Prebiotic Triple Oat Complex, which contains oat flour to moisturize your skin, oat extract to soothe and nourish skin, and oat oil to strengthen the skin moisture barrier and condition dry skin.

The cream also contains ceramide NP (one of the three ceramides found in CeraVe moisturizing cream) to support a healthy skin barrier.

Petrolatum locks in moisture, and shea butter, a natural emollient, soothes and softens your skin.

It’s fragrance-free and has a creamy texture that absorbs quickly without feeling greasy.

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream

Cerave Moisturizing Cream is a thicker, richer version of CeraVe’s Daily Moisturizing Lotion. It is designed to nourish dry to very dry skin on both the face and body.

This cream contains three essential ceramides that help replenish the skin’s natural moisture barrier and sodium hyaluronate for optimal hydration.

Unlike the oil-free Daily Moisturizing Lotion, this cream is formulated with petrolatum, an occlusive ingredient that helps to lock in moisture and keep the skin hydrated.

Additionally, the cream contains cholesterol, a lipid naturally found in the skin that helps to maintain hydration levels.

This CeraVe cream is non-comedogenic and won’t clog pores or cause acne, making it suitable for use on both the face and body.

Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, is a common skin condition that can cause dryness, redness, and itchiness.

Finding the right moisturizing product to help relieve the symptoms of eczema can be a challenge, but thankfully, many affordable drugstore products can provide relief.

Both Aveeno and CeraVe offer eczema products designed to relieve the discomfort associated with eczema symptoms.

Aveeno Eczema Therapy Daily Moisturizing Cream calms and soothes eczema symptoms like itchy, dry skin.

It is formulated with 1% colloidal oatmeal to relieve itch and skin irritation from eczema and strengthen the skin moisture barrier.

Aveeno’s Triple Oat Complex combines three oat ingredients:

Oat flour, rich in lipids and proteins, soothes the skin and protects the skin barrier. Oat extract offers prebiotic and soothing benefits. Oat oil contains unsaturated fatty acids to lock in moisture and prevent water loss.

Ceramide NP derived from corn oil helps to nourish and restore the skin’s natural barrier. Glycerin derived from vegetable oil moisturizes, and petrolatum locks in moisture.

Panthenol, or pro-vitamin B5, is a moisturizing ingredient that helps soothe itchy, irritated skin.

The fragrance-free cream is rich and creamy, and steroid-free.

Three essential ceramides (Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, and Ceramide EOP) act like the glue that holds skin cells together. Sodium hyaluronate helps lock in moisture.

The creamy oil also contains multiple plant oils. Safflower oil, rich in fatty acids, moisturizes the skin. Other oils include olive oil, soybean oil, grape seed oil, sunflower oil, and avocado oil.

Niacinamide helps reduce redness and irritation, while allantoin and rosemary leaf extract soothe the skin. Sodium PCA and cholesterol provide additional moisture.

Due to the oil content in the product, you’d think it would have a thinner, oily texture, but it has more of a cream texture that doesn’t feel oily or greasy at all.

About Aveeno

Aveeno is a skincare brand that has been trusted by millions of people worldwide for over 70 years.

The brand’s story began in 1945 when two American brothers discovered the skin-soothing properties of oats, which led to Aveeno formulating their products with finely milled colloidal oatmeal.

They went on to develop a range of products to help soothe and moisturize dry and sensitive skin.

Named after the Avena sativa plant, also known as the common oat, Aveeno has since become one of the most well-known skincare brands in the United States and worldwide.

Aveeno continues to use natural ingredients and formulates their products for sensitive skin types.

Aveeno’s products are free of paraben-free, phthalate-free, and dye-free, while using ingredients like oats and gentle soy to replenish the skin.

Aveeno offers a wide range of skincare products, including body washes, lotions, creams, facial cleansers, and moisturizers. The products are designed to provide hydration, nourishment, and protection to the skin, leaving it looking and feeling healthy and radiant.

What sets Aveeno apart is its commitment to using sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

The brand uses ethically sourced ingredients (their oat is 100% pure, non-GMO, and food grade) sourced from suppliers that treat their workforce safely and fairly.

Additionally, the brand is committed to recyclable packaging (over 80% of Aveeno bottles are recyclable) and has committed to reducing its environmental footprint.

About CeraVe

CeraVe is a skincare brand that was established in 2005 with the aim to provide affordable, effective, and easily accessible skincare products that help repair a compromised skin barrier.

Since extensive research has shown that various skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, and dry skin stem from a weakened skin barrier, CeraVe began collaborating with dermatologists to develop products that contain three skin-essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid to restore and preserve the skin’s protective barrier.

Their unique MultiVesicular Emulsion Technology (MVE) releases ceramide formulas slowly over time, providing long-lasting nourishment and hydration throughout the day.

CeraVe’s product range includes cleansers, moisturizers, serums, ointments, makeup removers, and sunscreens, all designed to address specific skin concerns and skin types, including normal, sensitive, oily, acne-prone, and combination skin.

They also offer products for babies, eczema, psoriasis, and diabetic skin.

The Bottom Line

Whether you choose Aveeno or CeraVe, you can trust that both skin care brands will provide quality skincare products to help nourish and protect your skin.

For me, CeraVe products tend to feel lighter on my skin. They have a slight advantage over Aveeno products in terms of their multiple active ingredients and long-lasting hydration thanks to their MVE Technology.

Ultimately, the choice between Aveeno and CeraVe comes down to your personal preference, skin concerns, and skin type.

Luckily you can test a few products from each brand without spending too much to find out which is the best for your skin, as both brands are very affordable.
