My Olay Super Serum Review

Olay Super Serum

Olay Super Serum utilizes niacinamide, lactic acid, a peptide, and a vitamin C derivative to exfoliate and brighten your skin while targeting the visible signs of aging.

This Olay serum claims to offer 5 benefits in 1 serum:

  • Improved Skin Texture
  • More Even-Looking Skin Tone
  • Firmer Feeling Skin
  • Visibly Smoother Lines
  • Extended Hydration

Olay Super Serum Pros and Cons

Here are some pros and cons of Olay Super Serum:

PROSCONS
Lightweight and non-sticky formula
On the pricier side for a drugstore serum
Leaves a subtle glow due to the mica in the formulaContains mica for a slight glow, which you may not like
Layers well with other productsMay not provide dramatic results for more pronounced signs of aging
Brightens and evens out skin toneContains fragrance
Targets fine lines and wrinkles
Great for beginners and those with sensitive skin
Olay Super Serum Pros and Cons:
Olay Super Serum, open bottle with dropper applicator.

All these benefits make this an anti-aging serum, as it tackles wrinkles, firmness, and skin tone and texture. (Just what I love in a serum!)

The serum has an iridescent pinkish hue and a lightweight, liquid gel-like texture.

The mica in the formula leaves a subtle glow on my skin, which is the main reason why I like to use the serum during the day to give my skin a slightly radiant look under makeup.

Olay Super Serum, bottle next to sample on hand.

If there is one thing Olay does right, it is product texture and consistency. The serum feels comfortable on my skin and doesn’t leave any sticky residue.

One of my main concerns with many of my serums is their ability to play well with other products. Olay Super Serum layers beautifully under moisturizers and sunscreen without pilling or balling up.

Olay Super Serum, bottle next to sample spread on hand.

My Results

In terms of my results after using the serum during the day for the past few months, I have noticed that my skin looks plumper and more even-toned since incorporating this serum into my routine.

I have also noticed a very slight improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, although it’s not a drastic change, so it may be from the hydration and moisturizing benefits of the serum.

If you have noticeable deep-set wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of elasticity, I think you are better off using stronger actives like retinol (you can find retinol in Olay Retinol 24 products, which I think are some of the best drugstore retinol products out there).

Note On Lactic Acid Concentration

I wouldn’t have known there was lactic acid in the serum if I hadn’t looked at the ingredient list, which makes me think that the concentration of lactic acid isn’t too high.*

I can usually tell when lactic acid is in a product at 5% and higher since it makes my skin tingle slightly. This serum doesn’t tingle at all, which may be a good thing for those with sensitive skin.

I like that the serum isn’t irritating, but that benefit may lead to a drawback for some. If you are looking for a product with a higher concentration of potent actives, this may not be your best choice.

* Olay does not disclose the concentration of active ingredients in the serum.

Who’s It For?

The serum is formulated for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It is suitable for those looking to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, brighten their complexion, and achieve smoother and hydrated skin.

The water-based formula isn’t greasy, so it’s suitable for combination and oily skin types, but is nourishing enough for drier skin types.

This serum could be a great choice for you if you want a non-irritating anti-aging serum to hydrate and brighten your skin or if you’re looking to prevent the signs of aging.

Key Ingredients in Olay Super Serum and Their Benefits For Your Skin

Olay Super Serum contains active ingredients like niacinamide, peptides, and vitamin C to address the visible signs of aging. Here are the key ingredients:

  • Niacinamide: Niacinamide is Olay’s favorite ingredient. It’s a form of vitamin B3 that is known for its ability to improve skin texture and even out skin tone. It also helps strengthen the skin’s barrier, making it less vulnerable to damage and smoothes fine lines.
  • Lactic Acid: An alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that helps exfoliate dead skin cells, revealing smoother, brighter-looking skin.
  • Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4: Olay’s Collagen Peptide improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improves skin texture.
  • 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid: A stable form of vitamin C that helps brighten skin, improve skin tone, and reduce the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It also has antioxidant properties that help protect your skin from environmental damage.
  • Sodium Hyaluronate: Also known as hyaluronic acid, this salt form helps hydrate and plump the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Tocopheryl Acetate: A form of vitamin E that has antioxidant properties and helps protect the skin from environmental stressors like pollution.
  • Panthenol: A form of vitamin B5 that helps soothe and moisturize the skin.
  • Trehalose: A sugar molecule that helps retain moisture in the skin, keeping it hydrated and plump.
  • Sodium Lactate: A form of lactic acid that helps hydrate and exfoliate the skin, improving its texture and appearance.
  • Mica: A mineral ingredient that adds a subtle shimmer to the serum, giving the skin a radiant and healthy glow.

The serum also contains moisturizing glycerin, dimethicone, a silicone that provides a smooth finish on the skin, and added fragrance.

How To Use Olay Super Serum

To incorporate Olay Super Serum into your skincare routine, simply apply a pea-sized amount onto clean skin before moisturizing.

Gently massage in circular motions until fully absorbed.

Use up to twice daily, morning and/or night, for best results. And don’t forget to follow up with a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day to protect your skin from UV damage.

Olay Super Serum vs Olay Super Serum Night Repair:

Olay also offers a nighttime version of their Super Serum: Olay Super Serum Night Repair.

I reached out to Olay to learn about the differences between the two, and they said that the night serum is fragrance-free and contains a few different ingredients.

  • Olay Super Serum contains Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4, Olay’s Collagen Peptide, that targets wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Olay Super Serum Night Repair contains Palmitoyl Dipeptide-7, which is supposed to boost the production of collagen.

Olay Super Serum Night Repair also contains rice bran extract, which may help with hyperpigmentation, and salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid that is well-loved for its ability to treat acne and breakouts.

Both serums are the same retail price.

I’ll stick with using Olay Super Serum since the formulas are similar. I can always use Super Serum at night if I choose.

Alternatives to Olay Super Serum

While Olay Super Serum is a great option for those looking to brighten and hydrate your skin, other alternatives on the market offer similar benefits.

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, handheld.

A popular niacinamide serum is The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, which contains niacinamide plus zinc to help improve skin texture and balance oil production.

The serum targets textural irregularities, dryness, dullness, visible shine, and signs of congestion in your skin. The Ordinary niacinamide serum is excellent for oily and acne-prone skin types.

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Brightening Serum.

Another alternative is Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Brightening Serum, which contains similar ingredients to Olay Super Serum, including niacinamide, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, and palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 to brighten and plump your skin.

This drugstore vitamin C serum could be a great choice for dull skin or uneven skin tone.

The Bottom Line

Olay Super Serum is a well-rounded, gentle serum with active ingredients that targets multiple skin concerns.

Its lightweight formula makes it suitable for all skin types and can easily be incorporated into any skincare routine. It’s not the most potent anti-aging serum on the market, but great for beginners and those with sensitive skin.

Consistent use should provide brighter, smoother, and more hydrated skin. Just don’t expect results overnight. As with any skincare product, patience and consistency are key.

A313 Review – Read Before You Buy https://www.abeautyedit.com/a313-review/ https://www.abeautyedit.com/a313-review/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2023 12:27:05 +0000 https://www.abeautyedit.com/?p=24337 If you’ve been searching for an effective retinol treatment to reduce the signs of aging, you may have come across A313. A313 is a French retinol pommade (ointment) that has gained a significant following, especially among skincare enthusiasts who love its effectiveness and affordability.

Fans rave about A313 for its ability to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, and sun damage and improve skin elasticity and overall skin texture.

A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate, handheld.

So….does this retinol treatment live up to the hype? Is it worth adding it to your already overflowing beauty shelf?

In today’s blog post, I’ll share my A313 review, covering everything from its ingredients and benefits to my experience with the product.

This post contains affiliate links, and any purchases made through these links will result in a commission for me at no extra cost to you. Please read my Disclosure for additional information.

Two A313 Formulas

Before I get into the review, I wanted to note that there are two versions of A313. The first is the original A313 Pommade, available in Europe, and the second is A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate, available in the US where I live.

Note that I purchased two tubes of A313 on Amazon (US). While both had the image of A313 Pommade (available in Europe), I received A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate from both sellers.

The difference between the A313 Vitamin A Pommade available in Europe and the American version is the type of retinoids in the formulas.

A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate (US) ingredient list contains retinyl palmitate as the only retinoid at a 0.12% concentration.

The European A313 version is called a “pommade,” a French term for an ointment with an occlusive texture to seal in moisture and help prevent water loss from the skin. Ointments are typically used to treat dry skin or skin conditions like psoriasis.

On the European website where it is sold (thefrenchpharmacy.co), the only active ingredient listed is “Synthetic Vitamin A (from concentrate)”, which isn’t very helpful because there are multiple types of synthetic vitamin A.

Other A313 reviews online note that the Pommade contains retinyl palmitate, retinyl propionate, and retinyl acetate, equalling a 0.12% retinoid concentration. Retinyl propionate and retinyl acetate, like retinyl palmitate, are retinol esters and are less potent than retinol.

Confusing? Yes. But regardless of which A313 cream you try, you’ll be using a retinyl ester that needs to be converted into retinol, then retinaldehyde, and retinoic acid to be available in its active form.

Since I live in the US, I’ll be discussing the version sold in the US: A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate.

A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate

A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate and box.

A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate is a topical skincare product often touted as an over-the-counter alternative to prescription retinoids.

Manufactured in France, this ointment contains a retinoid, a form of Vitamin A, that aims to encourage skin cell turnover, stimulate collagen production, improve skin texture, and reduce signs of aging.

Retinoids have many benefits for the skin and are highly studied for effectiveness in reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and acne.

Retinoids also address skin concerns such as hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and uneven skin tone and texture.

Forms of Vitamin A

To give some context, retinoic acid is the strongest and most active form of Vitamin A available only as a prescription here in the US. There are other forms of vitamin A that must be converted into retinoic acid by the body so it can work its magic.

Retinol, available over-the-counter and the most well-known form of Vitamin A, must first be converted into retinaldehyde, then retinoic acid to be in its active form to benefit your skin.

The main active ingredient in A313 is 0.12% retinyl palmitate, which is a retinyl ester. Retinyl esters must be converted into retinol, then to retinaldehyde, and finally to the active form of Vitamin A, retinoic acid.

So, needless to say, the retinyl palmitate in A313 needs to go through a few steps before becoming its active form in your skin, so it isn’t as potent as retinol or some other forms of Vitamin A.

A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate, flatlay.

A313 Ingredients

A313 has a relatively short ingredient list:

  • PEG 400: A low molecular weight water-soluble version of polyethylene glycol used as a solvent and stabilizer.
  • PEG 4000: A higher molecular weight version of polyethylene glycol that is a water-soluble softener, stabilizer, and texture enhancer that improves the skin feel of a product.
  • Polysorbate 80: An emulsifier that helps two liquids that don’t typically mix, like oil and water, remain stable together.
  • Retinyl Palmitate 200,000 IU: Retinyl palmitate, as previously mentioned, is a retinoid that needs three conversions to be active in your skin. 200,000 IU percent equates to a 0.12% concentration of retinyl palmitate, which is not a high concentration.

And that’s it. It contains only four ingredients, and the ointment is fragrance-free.

After reading the above ingredients, you’d think that this wouldn’t make the product very effective.

But since users rave about the results they see, something else must be going on, right?

So perhaps the effectiveness of this pommade comes from how retinyl palmitate is formulated with the other ingredients.

It seems as if the other ingredients in the product help this retinoid get into your skin so that the retinyl palmitate can work more effectively.

OR, it could be that the other ingredients, which create the ointment’s rich texture, are occlusive and lock in moisture, creating a more plump, smoother complexion after use.

A313 Review

A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate, open tube with ointment being dispensed by hand.

I’ve been using different forms of retinoids for years and have been quite proud of myself for graduating to retinal (retinaldehyde) recently, as I find that it is more potent and less irritating than retinol.

You can read about my new favorite retinoid in my Avene Retinal review here.

Even though I heard inklings from other reviewers that A313 tends to cause itchiness, dryness, and peeling, I still decided to give A313 a try.

A313 has a super thick Vaseline or petroleum jelly-like texture that is quite greasy on my skin.

Of course, since retinoids should only be used at night (retinoids break down in sunlight), the ointment won’t interfere with your skin or makeup during the day, but note that it might leave your pillow a little greasy, and it might be a little too heavy on oily skin.

A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate, flatlay of tube next to sample on hand.

I had some trouble with my first application. My first mistake was assuming that since this is a retinyl ester:

  • I could use more than a pea-sized amount. (Don’t do this!)
  • I could apply it on top of my favorite niacinamide serum while my face was still damp. (Don’t do this either!)

Wow, was I wrong. The itching started pretty soon after I applied A313 and didn’t let up. I tried. I really did. But after a few hours, I had to wash it off.

Lesson learned. Apply only a true pea-size amount and apply it to dry skin. You can apply moisturizer on top if you feel your skin needs it. (You can also apply your moisturizer under A 313 – which I’ll discuss below.)

Damp skin has a way of increasing potency and absorption, and in this case, that’s not necessarily a good thing.

A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate, flatlay of tube next to sample on hand absorbed.

So, I decided to give A313 another go with my newly learned lesson in mind. This time, I applied a very small amount, a pea size, that once spread onto my skin, didn’t feel like much on my skin.

It left my skin plump and soft but not as greasy as the first application when I used more of the pommade.

The itchiness was still there, but much less this time around, but my eyes became very irritated after application. Coincidence or not, I had to wash off A313 AGAIN after several minutes. After I washed my face, the itchiness and my eyes improved.

I wasn’t giving up, so I gave it one more shot. I applied a moisturizer under A313 to serve as a buffer between the retinoid and my skin. This time, the itching was less but still noticeable. I washed it off after an hour.

Ultimately, I decided that too many other affordable and effective retinoids on the market don’t cause this weird itching and irritation, so I haven’t continued to use A313.

A313 isn’t a strong retinoid, but there might be something about the formula that provides good results IF you can get past the itchiness and skin irritation. I didn’t get that far.

If you don’t mind/can handle some discomfort associated with using this cream, then you might want to give it a try.

If your skin can withstand it, A313 might be an option for brightening your complexion, evening out skin tone, and improving fine lines and skin texture.

However, if you have more sensitive skin like mine and still want to try it, then proceed with caution. Use a minimal amount of product and apply it on dry skin only. It might also help to use a moisturizer between this cream and your skin as a buffer.

A313 Alternatives

It’s worth considering alternatives to A313 if your skin doesn’t respond well or if you want to skip it. So many retinol products don’t have the same side effects, so you may want to explore those options first.

For an alternative that is still highly effective but gentle enough for sensitive skin, consider CeraVe retinol serums or The Ordinary Granactive Retinoids.

You can read more about The Ordinary retinol and retinoids in this comprehensive guide.

For several other affordable retinol and retinoid options, be sure to check out my guide to drugstore retinol.

A313 Cosmetic Cream With Retinyl Palmitate

How To Use A313

Apply a pea-sized amount of A313 to clean dry skin. Use a small amount and warm in your hands before applying.

You can follow with a gentle moisturizer if your skin needs it, or you can apply your moisturizer first and follow with A313 to decrease its potency.

The French Pharmacy (thefrenchpharmacy.co), which distributes A313 in Europe, plainly notes on their site that you can expect itching and flaking but that these side effects eventually go away once your skin gets used to the product.

It’s recommended that you use A313 at night once a week for the first week, twice a week for two weeks, three times a week for three weeks, and then increase usage as your skin can tolerate.

If your skin can’t tolerate the itching overnight, you can apply it as a mask and rinse it off after a few hours.

Avoid using with potent actives like acids, vitamin C, or other retinoids.

If you do try A313, as with any retinoid, it is important to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, as retinoids can make your skin slightly more sensitive to the sun, as they increase cell turnover.

Avibon vs A313

The French Pharmacy, where A313 is sold, notes that the old formula under the name Avibon has been discontinued, and A313 is the most current replacement product.

Is A313 Better Than Retin-A?

It is impossible to say that one retinoid cream is “better” than the other without considering various factors such as skin type, product composition, and individual experience.

BUT… there is a big difference between retinyl palmitate, the active ingredient in A313 in the US, and Retin-A, which is a brand name of tretinoin.

Tretinoin is pure retinoic acid and is a much more potent ingredient than retinyl palmitate, which must be converted to retinol, then retinaldehyde, before converting to retinoic acid and being effective.

Retin-A is only available by prescription from a physician, while A313 can be bought over the counter.

Also, you should work your way up to Retin-A and already have some experience with retinol and retinoids before trying it.

But just remember that everyone’s skin is different, and what works for one person may not work as well for another.

The best way to figure out which retinoid is right for you is by paying attention to how your skin reacts and adjusting accordingly. Also, make sure to consult with a dermatologist if in doubt.

Whatever path you choose, remember that it takes time and patience for any retinoid product to work its magic on your skin, so be sure to be consistent with your skincare routine and give it time to work!

A313 Review: The Bottom Line

A313 just didn’t work for my skin, although it may be worth trying if you don’t mind dealing with itchiness and irritation as your skin gets used to it. For me, it wasn’t worth it as so many other options feel more comfortable on my skin.

If you’re looking for more dramatic anti-aging results, I’d recommend investing in and working your way up to products that contain retinaldehyde or speaking to your dermatologist about prescription retinoids.

Dermelect Review

Many Dermelect products address the signs of aging, like wrinkles and fine lines, dark circles, dullness, lip lines, and uneven skin texture and tone.

These Dermelect products can be used on their own or along with professional procedures to enhance their results.

I’ll discuss my first impressions of an exfoliating serum, two retinol serums, under-eye treatment, neck cream, lip treatment, and eyelash treatment in this Dermelect review.

I’ll update this review after several weeks to share how the products have been working for me.

Dermelect Self-Esteem Beauty Sleep Serum

Dermelect Self-Esteem Beauty Sleep Serum, handheld.

Dermelect Self-Esteem Beauty Sleep Serum is an overnight skin-refining serum formulated with exfoliating acids to address the signs of aging like wrinkles, fine lines, uneven skin tone, and pore size.

The most concentrated acid in the serum is ascorbic acid (l-ascorbic acid), better known as vitamin C.

This popular antioxidant helps to fight free radical damage, brighten your skin, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and uneven skin tone.

Glycolic acid is the next ingredient that works to exfoliate your skin, promoting cell renewal and helping to improve skin texture.

Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) with the smallest molecule size of all AHAs, which means it can penetrate your skin more quickly than other AHAs (but may also irritate sensitive skin).

Dermelect Self-Esteem Beauty Sleep Serum, open bottle with dropper.

Salicylic acid, an oil-soluble beta hydroxy acid (BHA), works to unclog your pores and exfoliate your skin, reducing inflammation and redness.

It’s an excellent ingredient for acne-prone skin due to its ability to break down the oil in clogged pores that can lead to pimples.

Aloe barbadensis leaf extract is included for its moisturizing and soothing benefits. Arginine is an amino acid that helps hydrate and heal your skin.

Grapeseed extract, a potent antioxidant, protects your skin from free radical damage and environmental stressors.

Witch hazel is an astringent that works as an anti-inflammatory, and allantoin soothes your skin. Sodium hyaluronate (the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid) helps retain moisture and hydrate your skin.

The oil-free serum is formulated for all skin types.

Dermelect Self-Esteem Beauty Sleep Serum, bottle next to sample on hand.

Dermelect Self-Esteem Beauty Sleep Serum has a lightweight, watery texture that absorbs quickly into my skin without leaving behind any sticky residue.

The serum left my face a bit red after the first application since I can be sensitive to glycolic acid and salicylic acid, but my skin didn’t feel irritated. The next morning I woke to smoother skin with improved skin clarity.

After using this serum, I am reminded of how my skin looks after using one of my favorite serums, Sunday Riley Good Genes, but Dermelect is half the price.

I see brighter, smoother skin and a reduction in the appearance of pores – no wonder it’s a bestseller.

I like that it doesn’t contain many filler ingredients, and most are active ingredients that provide skin benefits.

Dermelect Revitalite Professional Eyelid & Dark Circle Corrector

Dermelect Revitalite Professional Eyelid & Dark Circle Corrector, handheld.

Dermelect Revitalite Professional Eyelid & Dark Circle Corrector is a 5-in-1 treatment formulated to address the signs of aging around the eyes.

The serum is designed to:

  • Reduce the look of puffiness and eye bags
  • Lighten the look of dark circles
  • Tighten the look of droopy eyelids
  • Conceals discoloration with light-diffusing pigments
  • A cool-tip metal applicator helps depuff, increase circulation, and soothe the eye area
Dermelect Revitalite Professional Eyelid & Dark Circle Corrector, open tube showing metal applicator.

The treatment is very slightly tinted and contains multiple peptides that are specifically formulated for the delicate eye area:

  • Eyeseryl: A tetrapeptide (Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5) that helps reduce the look of dark circles and eye bags. Per the manufacturer, it reduces puffy eyebags in just 15 days.
  • Haloxyl: A peptide complex that reduces the look of dark, undereye circles and supports skin firmness.
  • Sesaflash: A natural sesame-based ingredient that works to moisturize, tighten, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Liftensyl: Derived from soy protein, this active helps tighten, firm, and improve the look of skin elasticity.
Dermelect Revitalite Professional Eyelid & Dark Circle Corrector, tube next to sample on hand.

The cream is lightweight, non-greasy, and leaves my skin incredibly soft. I’m not one to use many tools to massage my skin, but the cooling metal applicator really soothes my undereye area.

I’m not expecting a huge improvement in my dark circles since nothing helps my hereditary dark circles. But I appreciate the brightening effect of the light-diffusing pigments.

I like using it in my morning skincare routine since it helps with morning puffiness and works well under makeup.

It’s a little pricey for an eye treatment, but since it contains four trademarked actives and an applicator I look forward to using, I think it could be worth it if you struggle with the signs of aging around your eyes.

Dermelect Smooth Upper Lip Professional Perioral Anti-Aging Treatment

Dermelect Smooth Upper Lip Professional Perioral Anti-Aging Treatment, handheld.

Dermelect Smooth Upper Lip Professional Perioral Anti-Aging Treatment is an extra-strength lip treatment formulated to reduce the look of vertical lip lines (the kind that makes your lipstick feather), laugh lines, and upper lip discoloration.

The treatment can be used as a complement to fillers and or injections and is filled with potent actives that work together to smooth, brighten and soften the skin around your upper lip:

  • Matrixyl 3000: A popular anti-aging peptide complex, Matrixyl 3000 reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improves skin tone and elasticity.
  • Hyaluronic Filling Spheres: This hyaluronic acid delivery system improves hydration when it comes in contact with your skin.
  • Alpha Arbutin: Derived from the bearberry plant, alpha arbutin is a natural brightening ingredient that evens out skin tone and fades dark spots.
  • Retinol: Pure Vitamin A has multiple skin benefits, including reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin tone, and softening rough skin.
  • GABA: Tightens and improves the look of expression lines.
Dermelect Smooth Upper Lip Professional Perioral Anti-Aging Treatment, open tube showing round applicator, handheld.

The treatment is ideal for:

  • Nasolabial folds
  • Barcode lines
  • Melasma
  • Smokers’ stains

I’ve never used a lip treatment like this before, but as I ramp up my anti-aging skincare routine as I get older, a lip treatment like this one would be the next logical step.

The lightweight cream is applied with a round tip, making application a breeze. It’s non-irritating and absorbs quickly without being greasy.

Dermelect Smooth Upper Lip Professional Perioral Anti-Aging Treatment, tube next to sample on hand.

I look forward to using this consistently twice a day to see if it can help with smile lines, so I’ll report back after several weeks.

Again, this is not the cheapest product, but if you deal with skin discoloration under your nose and around your lips, have noticeable lines around your lips, or are self-conscious about the signs of aging around your lip area, this could be an excellent targeted treatment.

It’s also an ideal treatment for smokers’ stains which can be challenging to cover with makeup.

Dermelect Self-Esteem Professional Neck Firming Lift

Dermelect Self-Esteem Professional Neck Firming Lift, handheld.

Ideal for neck sagging, wrinkles, or tech neck, Dermelect Self-Esteem Professional Neck Firming Lift targets these skin concerns and other signs of aging with its Agefinity complex that helps improve skin definition, elasticity, and tone.

Formulated for all skin types, this neck cream helps improve skin firmness and the sagging facial contours around the neck and jawline.

It also helps to smooth the look of tech neck, which are those pesky horizontal lines and wrinkles we get from spending way too much time looking down at our devices!

The cream is filled with skin-loving ingredients, including the AHAs glycolic acid and lactic acid and the BHA salicylic acid to gently exfoliate dead skin cells and help reduce the appearance of fine lines.

The lightweight moisturizer squalane helps repair dry skin, while avocado oil and shea butter softens and moisturizes with lipids and essential fatty acids.

Green tea extract and grape seed extract are potent antioxidants that help protect your skin from environmental stressors, and panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) soothes your skin.

Dermelect Self-Esteem Professional Neck Firming Lift, tube next to sample on hand.

I have noticed tech neck creep up on me in recent years as I am on my phone more than ever. I’ve been experimenting with neck creams, so I was excited to give this one a try.

Neck products are tricky because while your neck shows signs of aging, just like your face, it can be more sensitive to active ingredients. Luckily, I can use this fragrance-free neck cream twice daily without any irritation or redness.

The cream is lightweight, non-sticky, and absorbs easily without any greasy residue.

I’d love to know the active ingredient concentrations, but since the cream feels very gentle on my skin, I’m guessing the concentration of acids isn’t too high, which is fine since my neck can get red and irritated more easily than my face.

This neck cream would be suitable for anyone looking to prevent or reduce the signs of aging on their neck. It’s formulated with potent yet gentle actives and is suitable for all skin types.

I’ll report back whether or not I see an improvement in those annoying horizontal tech necklines with continued use.

Dermelect Outcrease Retinol Trifecta Serum

Dermelect Outcrease Retinol Trifecta Serum, handheld.

Dermelect Outcrease Retinol Trifecta Serum is a slow-release retinol serum containing three active retinol forms.

The water-free formula helps improve the look of wrinkles, fine lines, thick skin, and photodamage (skin damage from the sun).

Formulated for all skin types, the serum also refines skin texture and evens out skin tone.

The serum blends retinol (pure vitamin A) with retinyl palmitate and retinyl acetate.

While you’re probably familiar with the skin-smoothing benefits of retinol, you may not know that retinol palmitate, a less potent retinol ester, offers antioxidant benefits, and retinyl acetate helps stimulate collagen production for firmer skin.

Dermelect Outcrease Retinol Trifecta Serum, open bottle with dropper applicator.

The slow-release, micro-encapsulated delivery minimizes the risk of irritation that often comes along with retinol.

The retinol serum has a silky, runny liquid texture that sinks into my skin quickly without feeling greasy.

Dermelect doesn’t disclose the retinol concentration in this serum, but I didn’t experience any redness or irritation, which I sometimes do with stronger retinol concentrations.

Dermelect Outcrease Retinol Trifecta Serum, bottle next to sample on hand.

I’ve been using retinol for many years, so I wasn’t sure I would see any difference in my skin with this serum.

But my skin responded in a similar way as it did to Self-Esteem Beauty Sleep Serum. I woke to softer, smoother skin, and my pores minimized but without any redness.

One thing that surprised me was the affordable price of this retinol serum. For $39, it’s in the same general price range as L’Oreal and Olay retinol products.

If you don’t like the feel of heavy creams or serums, this retinol serum could be a great option for you since it’s so lightweight and absorbs quickly.

Also, if you’re new to retinol, this serum could be a gentle option, as the slow-release delivery system will minimize irritation.

Dermelect Confidence Crease Concentrate

Dermelect Confidence Crease Concentrate, handheld.

Dermelect Confidence Crease Concentrate is a retinol serum that comes in a waterless formula that gets a boost from Deremelect’s Hyaluronic Filling Spheres.

The concentrate contains RetiStar Stabilized Retinol for maximum stability. It targets wrinkles, fine lines, loss of elasticity, and dark spots and protects the skin against photo-aging.

Hyaluronic Filling Spheres expand upon contact to provide a cushioning effect that helps improve visible wrinkles and creases.

This temporary filling action gives skin a more youthful appearance, and the spheres also help lock in hydration.

Dermelect Confidence Crease Concentrate, bottle next to sample on hand.

While the velvety concentrate is supposed to double as a primer for improved makeup application and wear, I stick to using it at night since retinol can break down in sunlight.

The concentrate is fragrance-free with a thicker, silky emulsion texture, yet it doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy.

I could see this concentration being a nice option for those with dry skin since it is boosted with hyaluronic acid and has a thicker texture which helps lock in moisture with the silicones in the formula.

I love the silky feel of this concentrate and will probably get the most use out of this serum in the colder weather months.

Between this concentrate and Outcrease Retinol Trifecta Serum, I slightly prefer Outcrease Retinol Trifecta Serum’s more lightweight texture and feel on my somewhat oily skin.

Another consideration is cost. This concentrate is twice the price of the retinol serum, so please keep this in mind if price is an issue.

Dermelect XL Lash Volumizer

Dermelect XL Lash Volumizer, handheld.

Dermelect XL Lash Volumizer is an eyelash and brow booster serum that contains a trio of multi-peptides to improve the look of weak, thin, and brittle lashes.

The peptides in the volumizing lash serum are:

  • SymPeptide XLash: Improves the look of eyelash thickness and density in as little as two weeks.
  • Capixyl Peptide: a biomimetic peptide combined with a red clover extract to promote fuller and thicker lashes.
  • Widelash Tripeptide: A biotinoyl tripeptide that conditions lashes and improves moisture.
Dermelect XL Lash Volumizer, open with brush applicator, handheld.

As a bonus, you can also use the fragrance-free lash volumizer on your brows.

The overnight conditioning treatment moisturizes my lashes with its lightweight milky formula. It’s light and not sticky or greasy.

I’ve experienced no irritation so far. After several weeks, I’ll share my results.

Dermelect Pros

Dermelect formulates its products with quality, proven active ingredients, and offers a wide variety of anti-aging products that address multiple skin concerns.

While some products may work better for specific skin types depending on the ingredients, Deremelect formulates all their products to be suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

I like that Deremelect takes into consideration how their products wear with other skincare and makeup. It’s so frustrating when you find a fantastic formula, but it pills or doesn’t play well with makeup.

The Dermelect products I tested under makeup wore beautifully and had no greasy residue after application.

Many Dermelect products target very specific pain points that I haven’t seen with other low-to-mid-price brands, like their anti-aging lip treatment and a forehead line treatment.

Another plus is that all the Deremelect products I tested are fragrance-free, so they shouldn’t irritate sensitive skin.

All Dermelect products are cruelty-free, and all of the products in this post are vegan, fragrance-free, gluten-free, sulfate-free, SLS-free, SLES-free, paraben-free, and phthalate-free.

Dermelect Cons

Many of the Dermelect products I tried each contain several active ingredients that work together to target your skin concerns.

While this can be a pro, if you have sensitive skin, it may not work for your skin type, and you might be better off using a product with fewer active ingredients.

Dermelect doesn’t share the active ingredient concentrations in their products. I prefer to know the percentage of actives in the products I use to gauge how my skin responds since it can be somewhat sensitive.

Not knowing the ingredient concentration is a drawback for me.

Finally, Dermelect products aren’t the least expensive out there. I would say they are mid-range. More expensive than drugstore but less than high-end.

But if you buy Dermelect products when they are on sale, you can get a nice discount.

Dermelect Review: The Bottom Line

There wasn’t a single Dermelect Cosmeceuticals product that I didn’t like. The only sensitivity I had was to their best-selling Self-Esteem Beauty Sleep Serum, which was a bit strong for my somewhat sensitive skin.

But otherwise, I really like the retinol products and enjoyed pampering myself with the neck, eye, and lip treatments.

Deremelect also offers award-winning peptide-infused nail care treatments that I’m very interested in trying.

If you are looking for targeted anti-aging products, I think Dermelect Cosmeceuticals is definitely worth checking out.

Avene RetrinAL Review https://www.abeautyedit.com/avene-retrinal-review/ https://www.abeautyedit.com/avene-retrinal-review/#respond Thu, 29 Jun 2023 13:04:43 +0000 https://www.abeautyedit.com/?p=22418 Avene RetrinAL skincare products are popular for their ability to visibly reduce signs of aging. This French brand’s collection of products contains the retinoid retinal and other anti-agers that work together to target wrinkles, expression lines, and other signs of aging.

I can never pass by over-the-counter retinoids, so I purchased four Avene RetrinAL products and put them to the test to see how they performed.

Avene Retrinal Review: Retrinal 0.1. Intensive Cream, Retrinal Advanced Correcting Serum, Retrinal Ceramide Lipid Replenishing Balm, and Retrinal Eyes Eye Cream.

In this Avene RetrinAL review, I’ll share my experiences and results after using the products for a full month.

Avene RetrinAL Collection

Avene RetrinAL products are physician-strength anti-aging products formulated to reduce the look of wrinkles and deep lines for a more youthful complexion.

A key ingredient in this Avene skincare collection is retinal (also called retinaldehyde), a retinoid and vitamin A derivative known for its powerful anti-aging properties and ability to boost collagen production.

Retinal is more potent than retinol yet less likely to cause irritation, which has quickly made it my go-to for tackling wrinkles and fine lines.

Retinal converts directly to its active form of retinoic acid (a.k.a. the potent prescription tretinoin) in the skin, which is what makes it so effective at correcting the signs of aging.

Retinol must convert to retinal and then to retinoic acid, so it’s not as direct in its action and can cause more skin irritation.

Retinal even offers antibacterial benefits, making it ideal for oily acne-prone skin types.

When it comes to correcting the signs of aging, Avene RetrinAL products target the most stubborn ones, like fine lines and wrinkles, without causing the same irritation that retinol does, making it much better suited to sensitive skin and those prone to allergies or eczema.

The other stand-out quality of these Avene products is the packaging. Avene uses its Sterile Cosmetics packaging to avoid the use of unnecessary preservatives in its products.

Their airtight D.E.F.I. (Device for Exclusive Formula Integrity) packaging encases the formulas so that product effectiveness won’t degrade over time. This is another benefit for skin that is sensitive to preservatives!

You can read more about Avene’s patented sealing system here.

NOTE: Since some of these products contain retinal (retinaldehyde), it is important to use daily sun protection while using these products and for a week after since retinal can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Avene RetrinAL Review

I tried a retinal face cream, retinal eye cream, bakuchiol serum, and bakuchiol moisturizing balm from Avene’s RetrinAL collection.

Note that Avene’s RetrinAL face cream and eye cream contain retinal, while the serum and balm contain bakuchiol, a plant-based retinol alternative.

You’ll notice that these are NOT inexpensive anti-aging products. The Sterile Cosmetics packaging surely contributes to the price of some of the products, which is much more expensive than drugstore pricing.

The good news is that Avene often has sales, and who doesn’t love a discount? Check out their offers page for the most up-to-date deals.

Let’s start with my favorite Avene RetrinAL product:

Avene RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream

Avene RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream, handheld.

Avene RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream is formulated to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and deep lines with its 0.1% concentration of retinal (retinaldehyde).

The yellow fragrance-free cream also contains pre-tocopheryl, a photo-stable form of vitamin E that provides antioxidant protection against free radicals that can break down collagen and elastin in the skin and cause wrinkles, fine lines, uneven skin tone, and dark spots.

Relastide, a pro-elastin peptide, is also in the formula. This peptide is designed to help support skin firmness and make it appear more plump.

Like other Avene products, RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream contains Avene Thermal Spring Water from Avene, France. This spring water is rich in postbiotic microflora that soothes and calms sensitive skin.

Avene RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream bottle next to sample on hand.

Avene RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream is the most potent retinal product I’ve tried.

I was a little reluctant to start this 0.1% retinal cream (vs their 0.05% retinal cream) since I have somewhat sensitive skin, but since I am a regular user of retinoids and retinol, I figured I’d dive right in with the stronger concentration since it came highly recommended.

I am glad I did! This 0.1 Intensive Cream causes no irritation when used every other night, which is surprising since my skin likes to act up when I use more potent retinoids.

I tried to increase usage to nightly too quickly, and I noticed my skin feeling extra tight during the day, and I experienced redness after washing, so I switched to every other night.

The cream sinks right into my skin without any stickiness. It has a thicker texture that doesn’t feel super moisturizing, so I always follow with a moisturizer after applying the cream, which Avene also suggests.

After a few weeks of use, I noticed a difference in the texture and tone of my skin. My fine lines are smoothed, and my complexion is more even-toned than before I started using it.

Formulated for all skin types, the cream should last about 60 days with nightly use. You can use it on your face, neck, and décolleté.

The main drawback? The price! The Avene RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream, which comes in an airtight bottle, is a bit pricey, but with its effectiveness and gentleness on the skin, it’s certainly worth it, in my opinion.

NOTE: The collection also includes Avene RetrinAL 0.05 Cream, a lower-concentration retinal cream if you want to start with a gentler retinal product.

Avene RetrinAL Advanced Correcting Serum

Avene RetrinAL Advanced Correcting Serum, handheld.

Avene RetrinAL Advanced Correcting Serum is a day serum that doesn’t contain retinal but bakuchiol, a plant-derived retinol alternative.

Bakuchiol is gentler on the skin while offering similar anti-aging benefits to retinol, such as reducing wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation, as noted in this clinical study.

Bakuchiol, derived from the babchi plant, is an excellent option for sensitive skin since it is not as irritating as retinol but provides similar results.

Bakuchiol has been shown to regulate gene expression like retinol and stimulate collagen production, improving lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, elasticity, and skin firmness.

The serum also contains hyaluronic acid in its sodium salt form of sodium hyaluronate, which is great for boosting hydration while keeping the skin feeling plump and nourished.

Avene RetrinAL Advanced Correcting Serum, bottle next to sample on hand.

Niacinamide, vitamin B3, helps reduce inflammation and improve skin texture and tone. Niacinamide also helps to reduce oil production, making it great for oily and acne-prone skin.

RetrinAL Advanced Correcting Serum also contains pre-tocopheryl, a stable form of vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps to protect the skin against environmental stressors.

Avene Thermal Spring Water is a key ingredient to help soothe and hydrate the skin.

Formulated for all skin types, the serum should last about a month if you use it twice daily or two months if you use it once daily.

Avene RetrinAL Advanced Correcting Serum, dropper depressed/flat.

The serum has a dropper applicator that is uniquely designed to dispense the same amount every time. The top of the dropper becomes flat when you tighten the lid. When you untwist the lid, the top pops up and fills with serum.

Press the top of the lid to dispense the perfect amount of serum. Simple and easy!

Avene RetrinAL Advanced Correcting Serum has a runny, milky texture that absorbs quickly into my skin, leaving no residue.

I love using this serum during the day to give my skin a hydrating boost before applying sunscreen and makeup, and It’s lightweight enough to layer under sunscreen and makeup.

Avene RetrinAL Advanced Correcting Serum, open bottle with filled dropper applicator, handheld.

My skin looks more nourished and hydrated, and I think it’s the perfect anti-aging day serum to pair with RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream (or RetrinAL 0.5 Cream) at night. They work to provide a more even skin tone and texture and improved skin radiance.

Overall, Avene RetrinAL Advanced Correcting Serum is an excellent product if you can’t tolerate retinol or are looking for a gentle yet effective anti-aging serum.

Again the main drawback is the price. Still, I can see keeping this in my morning skincare routine and alternating it with ascorbic acid (vitamin C) serums.

Avene RetrinAL Eyes Eye Cream

Avene RetrinAL Eyes Eye Cream, handheld.

Avene RetrinAL Eyes Eye Cream is a 3-in-1 eye cream that is formulated to:

  • Provide skin hydration
  • Reduce the look of fine lines
  • Reduce the look of dark circles and puffiness

The eye cream contains retinal (retinaldehyde), known for its impressive ability to reduce visible signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and crow’s feet.

Retinal is gentler than retinol yet highly effective, making it an excellent choice for the delicate under-eye area.

Hyaluronic acid MO is also included in the formula to mimic the size of natural hyaluronic acid for optimal skin absorption. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant that helps retain water and hydrate your skin.

Dextran sulfate helps minimize the look of dark circles and puffiness.

Avène’s signature Thermal Spring Water, renowned for its natural, healing qualities, provides a calming effect.

Avene RetrinAL Eyes Eye Cream flatlay next to sample on hand.

The eye cream comes in an airtight pump bottle. Formulated for all skin types, this eye cream is designed to last 60 days with nightly use around the eye contour.

The eye cream has a silky, velvety feel, thanks in part to the silicone in the formula. While it’s not the most lightweight eye cream I’ve ever tried, my eye area feels super smooth and soft after application.

I have dark circles and can’t say I’ve seen a noticeable improvement, but no eye cream has helped my dark circles. I have noticed that the milia (white bumps) I used to get under my eyes are not noticeable anymore.

I’ve experienced zero irritation with Avene RetrinAL Eyes. I can’t say the same thing for some retinol eye creams I’ve tried.

This retinal eye cream, along with 0.1 Intensive Cream, really packs a punch for anti-aging benefits.
I’ll continue to use and repurchase. My new favorite night eye cream!

Avene RetrinAL Ceramide Lipid-Replenishing Balm

Avene RetrinAL Ceramide Lipid-Replenishing Balm, handheld.

Avene RetrinAL Ceramide Lipid-Replenishing Balm is a deeply nourishing moisturizer that targets the signs of aging, like wrinkles and fine lines.

The balm helps strengthen your skin barrier while providing up to 48 hours of hydration.

Bakuchiol, a natural retinol alternative, is the star ingredient of this balm. This active helps reduce wrinkles and smooth skin texture without irritating your skin as other retinoids do.

The ceramide-rich formula also contains niacinamide to brighten and even skin tone, while Avene Thermal Spring Water provides a soothing effect on your skin.

A ceramide complex improves your natural skin barrier and intensely hydrates your skin. Safflower seed oil is filled with moisturizing fatty acids and antioxidant vitamin E.

Avene RetrinAL Ceramide Lipid-Replenishing Balm, jar next to sample on hand.

Shea butter is a soothing moisturizer and also contains skin protective antioxidants. The balm also contains sunflower seed, olive, soybean, and castor oils.

Formulated for dry, mature, and aging skin types, the balm should last about 30 days. It can be used once or twice a daily usage.

The texture of this moisturizing balm is smooth and creamy, so it glides on effortlessly and absorbs quickly into my skin. It feels very rich on my skin yet isn’t thick or heavy.

Since my skin leans toward the oily side, and I tested it during the summer, it was too rich for my skin during the day.

So I prefer to use this on the evenings when I’m not using 0.1 Intensive Cream since bakuchiol has retinol-like effects, and I don’t want to overdo it with my somewhat sensitive skin.

If you have mature or dry skin or want a gentle yet rich anti-aging cream, this bakuchiol balm would be a great choice.

FAQs

What are the differences between Avene RetrinAL 0.05 and 0.1?

The primary difference between RetrinAL 0.05 Cream and RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream lies in the concentration of retinal (retinaldehyde), an active ingredient known for its anti-aging benefits. The higher concentration may yield faster and more noticeable results but could also increase the risk of irritation for users with sensitive skin.

What are the common side effects of using Avene RetrinAL?

While Avene RetrinAL is generally well-tolerated, some users may experience mild side effects such as redness, dryness, or irritation.

If you have sensitive skin, it’s recommended to patch test the product to determine your skin’s compatibility. Discontinue use if you experience any severe or persistent side effects.

Is Avene RetrinAL suitable for all skin types?

Yes, Avene RetrinAL is formulated to be suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

However, as with any skincare product, it’s important to patch test these products first to ensure compatibility with your skin.

How long does it take for Avene RetrinAL to show results?

The time it takes for Avene RetrinAL to show results can vary depending on individual factors such as skin type, age, and the extent of the signs of aging.

You may see improvements in as little as a few weeks, or it may take months to notice significant change. To achieve the best results, it’s important to be patient and consistent with your skincare routine.

Avene RetrinAL Review: The Bottom Line

Are Avene RetrinAL products worth it? Even though they are not cheap, I think all the Avene products I tried are worth it. From the package and ingredients to product experience and results (and no irritation!), I am very impressed.

I have to admit, I have no intention of returning to retinol products anytime soon since I discovered these retinal products!

Remember to be patient and give your skin the time it needs to show visible improvement.

It’s important to note that everyone’s skin is different, and results may vary. But incorporating Avene RetrinAL products into your skin care regimen may help unlock smoother, more youthful skin.

La Roche-Posay’s Vitamin C10 Serum is no exception. It’s a multi-benefit serum that helps to brighten, smooth, and protect your skin.

Today, I’ll share my honest thoughts and experience with the serum in this La Roche-Posay Vitamin C Serum review. We’ll discuss ingredients, effectiveness, and overall performance.

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C10 Serum, handheld.

First, let’s start with the ingredients and benefits of this vitamin C serum:

This post contains affiliate links, and any purchases made through these links will result in a commission for me at no extra cost to you. Please read my Disclosure for additional information.

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C Serum

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum is an anti-aging face and neck serum formulated to soften wrinkles and fine lines, smooth skin texture and tone, and improve skin radiance.

The serum contains a 10% concentration of pure vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid or l-ascorbic acid.

Vitamin C is known for three main benefits that make it so popular:

  1. Brightening: Vitamin C brightens skin by reducing dark spots and uneven skin tone. Vitamin C inhibits melanin production, the pigment responsible for skin hyperpigmentation and dark spots.
  2. Anti-Aging/Wrinkle Fighting: Vitamin C helps reduce and even out wrinkles and fine lines since it boosts collagen production, which helps keep skin firm and bouncy.
  3. Antioxidant Protection: Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from environmental stressors, keeping your skin looking smooth and healthy.

The serum is non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores and cause acne or breakouts.

La Roche Posay notes that this vitamin C serum is suitable for sensitive skin.

Pure Vitamin C Drawbacks

Of course, with the benefits of vitamin C come the drawbacks.

Pure vitamin C at a high concentration, often over 10%, can potentially irritate some skin types and cause dryness and flaky skin.

Pure vitamin C is also notoriously unstable and can quickly degrade and oxidize when exposed to light, heat, and air, which can reduce its effectiveness.

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum Key Ingredients

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C10 Serum, open bottle with dropper applicator.

10% Pure Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): This hero ingredient and powerful antioxidant helps brighten and even out skin tone, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and stimulates collagen production for firmer, more youthful-looking skin.

Ascorbic acid also protects against damaging free radicals and improves skin texture and radiance.

Salicylic Acid: This beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) exfoliates your skin and unclogs pores to prevent acne, controls excess oil production, and refines the look of pores.

Salicylic acid also reduces the appearance of blackheads and whiteheads and has anti-inflammatory properties that soothe redness and irritation. It’s excellent for acne-prone and oily skin.

Neurosensine: This synthetic dipeptide is known for its calming effect and ability to soothe sensitive skin, reducing skin redness and irritation.

Glycerin (derived from vegetable sources): This humectant attracts and retains moisture in the skin, helping to prevent dryness and dehydration while improving skin elasticity and smoothness.

Glycerin also enhances the skin’s natural barrier function, providing a protective layer that helps shield the skin from environmental stressors.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA): This hydrating active ingredient attracts and retains moisture, providing deep hydration for plump, dewy skin. It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and improves skin texture and radiance.

La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water: This spring water, sourced from the town of La Roche-Posay in France, contains minerals and trace elements, including a high concentration of selenium, a skin-protective antioxidant.

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C Serum Review

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C10 Serum, flatlay with capped bottle and unused dropper.

La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum is packaged to protect the unstable vitamin C in the serum. The bottle has a screw cap as a lid, and a dropper comes separately in the box to keep air out of the bottle before you open it for the first time.

The first thing I noticed when opening the bottle was the scent. It is a STRONG scent. It smells fresh and clean.

The scent started growing on me after using it a few times, and I am happy to report that the fragrance dissipates after it absorbs into my skin.

It has a thick consistency that doesn’t feel tacky or sticky on my skin. It also works well with other skincare products and under makeup, too.

While they don’t disclose the amount of salicylic acid in the serum, I think it is helping keep my skin clear and minimizing those pesky breakouts.

In fact, I think the inclusion of salicylic acid is one of the stand-out qualities of this serum, as this should appeal to acne-prone skin.

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C10 Serum, open bottle with dropper applicator.

I like the 10% vitamin C concentration, as it is concentrated enough to be effective but not too concentrated to irritate my somewhat sensitive skin.

I haven’t noticed any brightening benefits, but I’ll continue to use this during the day for its antioxidant protection.

If you don’t mind the strong fragrance, this serum could be a great choice for antioxidant protection, brightening, and anti-aging benefits.

It’s also a great choice if you have sensitive or dry skin or are sensitive to strong vitamin C serums with higher ascorbic acid concentrations (over 10%).

How To Use La Roche-Posay Vitamin C Serum

Directions indicate that the serum should be applied in your morning skincare routine.

The serum comes with a dropper applicator. Dispense a few drops to cover your face and neck.

I like using vitamin C products in my morning routine because it helps protect my skin from environmental stressors during the day.

Also, be sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from UV rays during the day.

Directions also note that pure vitamin C can react with contact with the air, causing the serum to turn yellow. They note that the serum is still effective.

From my experience, for best results, it’s best to use pure vitamin C serums within a few months of opening.

As with any new skincare product, it is a good idea to patch test before using this serum for the first time to avoid an adverse initial reaction.

Drugstore Alternatives to La Roche-Posay Vitamin C10 Serum

If you are looking for a different texture, type, or concentration of vitamin C, or if this La Roche-Posay serum doesn’t work for you, there are many affordable drugstore options.

L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives Pure Vitamin C Serum

L’Oreal Revitalift Derm Intensives Vitamin C Serum

From sister brand L’Oreal (both La Roche-Posay and L’Oreal are owned by the L’Oreal Group) comes L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives Pure Vitamin C Serum.

Like La Roche-Posay’s vitamin C serum, L’Oreal’s Revitalift vitamin C serum contains 10% pure vitamin C.

Unlike La Roche-Posay, this vitamin C serum is fragrance-free.

It’s formulated to improve skin radiance, reduce wrinkles and support a more visibly even skin tone.

The serum also contains hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, a low molecular weight hyaluronic acid that acts like a sponge and draws water to the skin for a more hydrated, plump complexion.

The serum has a lightweight, non-greasy texture that leaves your skin feeling very soft and smooth, thanks to the silicone (dimethicone) in the formula.

The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2%

The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2%

If dullness is a main skin concern, then The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% could be a great choice for you.

The serum is formulated with two well-known skin brighteners: ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C) and alpha arbutin.

This water-free serum uses 8% pure vitamin C combined with a 2% concentration of alpha arbutin, a natural antioxidant and skin-brightening agent.

Found naturally in the bearberry plant, alpha arbutin is a derivative of skin-lightener hydroquinone, which helps reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and acne scars.

The Ordinary’s formula only contains three ingredients: propanediol, ascorbic acid, and alpha-arbutin.

Propanediol is a solvent and moisturizer that gives the serum a somewhat oily feel upon application. This oily feeling goes away once the serum is absorbed.

Although it takes a little extra effort and planning to ensure you use it correctly, this vitamin C powder is an excellent option if you like to DIY your skin care products and customize your routine to your skin’s needs.

The Ordinary also offers two highly concentrated potent vitamin C suspensions: The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% and The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 30% in Silicone.

These water-free formulas have thicker textures and potent vitamin C concentrations, so they may not be the best choice for sensitive skin.

CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum

CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum

CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum contains 10% pure vitamin C along with CeraVe’s signature active ingredients: three essential ceramides (Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP) to strengthen your skin’s moisture barrier.

The serum brightens, smooths fine lines, and reduces the look of dark spots and uneven skin tone.

Sodium hyaluronate (the salt form of hyaluronic acid) hydrates and nourishes your skin, while panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) soothes with its anti-inflammatory benefits. Cholesterol is a lipid that moisturizes your skin.

The serum is formulated with CeraVe’s MVE Technology, which offers a slow release of ceramides for continuous hydration.

This vitamin C serum is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It’s fragrance-free, paraben-free, and non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores.

Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum

Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum, handheld.

If you are looking for an inexpensive yet strong, pure vitamin C serum, Timeless 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum is one of the best vitamin C serums.

It contains a 20% concentration of pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) to boost collagen production, improve skin tone, promote healthy cell turnover, and provide antioxidant protection.

The serum also contains vitamin E (tocopherol) and ferulic acid, a potent antioxidant.

Clinical studies have shown that ferulic acid stabilizes and doubles the photoprotection of vitamins C and E.

In other words, ferulic acid improves the effectiveness of vitamins C and E in protecting the skin from sun damage.

Suitable for all skin types, this Timeless serum is often considered an affordable alternative to best-selling but very pricey SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic vitamin C serum. SkinCeuticals contains a 15% concentration of pure vitamin C, as well as vitamin E and ferulic acid.

NOTE: Timeless also offers a 10% Vitamin C Serum with ferulic acid and vitamin E.

Vitamin C Derivative Alternatives

If pure vitamin C is too strong for your skin, or if you want a more stable serum, consider a vitamin C derivative serum.

There are many vitamin C derivates on the market, including ascorbyl glucoside, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, and sodium ascorbyl phosphate, among others.

These derivatives are formulated at a higher pH closer to our skin’s natural pH than pure vitamin C. (Pure vitamin C should be formulated at a pH of under 3.5 for it to be most effective).

Vitamin C derivatives tend to cause less irritation, redness, and dryness than pure vitamin C. Vitamin C derivatives also tend to be more stable than pure vitamin C.

The Ordinary Vitamin C Derivatives

The Ordinary Vitamin C Derivatives: Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F, and Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution.

The Ordinary offers four vitamin C derivatives:

Each of these serums has its own benefits. For more details on all The Ordinary vitamin C products, please see my The Ordinary vitamin C guide.

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Serum

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Brightening Serum

Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Serum is formulated with the derivative 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid (also called ethyl ascorbic acid) to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

The serum also contains Olay’s Amino Peptide, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, which helps boost collagen production and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

Olay’s favorite ingredient, niacinamide (vitamin B3), is included to brighten skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots.

Lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), is also included in the serum. Lactic acid helps exfoliate the skin and gently sweep away dead skin cells.

Please note there is added fragrance in this serum.

NOTE: If you want a supercharged Olay vitamin C serum, you can try Olay Vitamin C + Peptide 24 MAX Serum, which contains 2X the peptides vs the original Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Serum.

The Bottom Line

La Roche-Posay Vitamin C10 Serum is an excellent option if you want a pure vitamin C serum with a mid-range vitamin C concentration supplemented with acne-busting salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid, and other beneficial ingredients.

I think it’s a great choice for acne-prone or oily skin types due to the inclusion of salicylic acid. A true multi-tasker!

8 Best Azelaic Acid Products (I’ve Tried Them All!) https://www.abeautyedit.com/best-azelaic-acid-products/ https://www.abeautyedit.com/best-azelaic-acid-products/#respond Tue, 30 Aug 2022 19:34:30 +0000 https://www.abeautyedit.com/?p=15344 While skincare ingredients like retinol and vitamin C get a lot of attention for their skin benefits, other lesser-known but just as effective ingredients also address multiple skin concerns. One of these skincare actives is azelaic acid.

Azelaic acid skincare products are ideal for those with acne-prone skin, as they help to reduce inflammation and kill bacteria. Azelaic acid can also help brighten the skin and even skin tone.

Best Azelaic Acid Products from The Ordinary, Peach Slices, Cos De Baha, Mario Badescu, PCA Skin, Paula's Choice and Naturium

I’ve tested quite a few azelaic acid products and narrowed it down to this list of the eight best azelaic acid products, most of which are serums that will give you the most bang for your buck.

Let’s take a look at the seven best azelaic acid products for your skin.

This post contains affiliate links, and any purchases made through these links will result in a commission for me at no extra cost to you. Please read my Disclosure for additional information.

8 Best Azelaic Acid Products

My Top Picks

While there are many effective topical azelaic acid skincare products on the market, this list includes a variety of product types (cleanser, serums, suspension) that are, for the most part, quite affordable.

Most of these products have an azelaic acid concentration of 10%, which is an effective concentration to get visible results.

1. Paula’s Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster Serum

Paula's Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster Serum handheld.

Paula’s Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster is a best-selling gel cream formulated with 10% azelaic acid.

This azelaic acid product targets multiple skin concerns, including acne, enlarged pores, uneven skin texture, redness, and uneven skin tone. It even helps fade post-breakout acne scars and marks.

Azelaic acid has antibacterial benefits as an acne treatment and targets P. acnes, the acne-causing bacteria. It also helps to soothe inflammation and brighten your skin.

The booster also contains 0.5% salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that helps to exfoliate your skin and unclog pores. Plant extracts like licorice root, allantoin, and bisabolol calm and soothe your skin.

Paula’s Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster is oil-free and works as a spot treatment or can be used all over your face.

Use it alone or mix it with a serum or moisturizer. Because it’s oil-free, it’s great for oily skin.

2. The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10% Suspension

The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10% Suspension

The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10% Suspension has gained a cult following for its ability to brighten your skin and improve the appearance of blemishes, uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, textural irregularities, and dullness.

In addition to 10% azelaic acid, the suspension contains vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect your skin from free radical damage, which can lead to premature skin aging.

Some users love The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10% Suspension for calming rosacea, a skin condition that causes redness and inflammation. Others won’t be without it because it reduces breakouts and keeps skin clear.

Since azelaic acid typically doesn’t irritate the skin as much as AHAs (i.e., glycolic acid or lactic acid), you can use it daily to address your skin concerns.

The suspension has the texture of a cream, so The Ordinary suggests applying it after your cleanser, water-based serums, and oils, but before your moisturizer or face cream. (I prefer to use it before oils, so use it in the order that works best for your skin.)

Like all The Ordinary products, it’s super affordable, yet one drawback is it has a somewhat grainy texture that might not play well with some other skincare products.

For more details on this product, please see my review of The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10% Suspension.

3. Naturium Azelaic Topical Acid 10%

Naturium Azelaic Topical Acid 10% Serum

Naturium Azelaic Topical Acid 10% is a serum that contains glycinated azelaic acid, an azelaic acid derivative that balances excess oil while hydrating your skin.

The serum gently exfoliates your skin while reducing the look of dark spots, hyperpigmentation, discoloration, and uneven skin tone.

The azelaic acid derivative (potassium azeloyl diglycinate) is water-soluble. It provides similar benefits as azelaic acid, such as brightening your skin but also helps regulate sebum (oil) production, which is great for those with oily skin.

Pure azelaic acid can be drying, but this specialized high-soluble blend of azelaic acid and amino acid glycine won’t cause dryness, making this serum ideal for dry, acne-prone skin.

Niacinamide, another key ingredient in this serum, helps to fade away dark spots and brighten your skin by reducing melanin production. This acitve ingredient also helps balance sebum production and supports a healthy skin barrier.

Niacinamide’s antioxidant benefits help protect your skin from environmental damage, and it has been shown to help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Sodium hyaluronate, a type of hyaluronic acid, is a powerful ingredient that helps to hydrate and plump up your skin. Coffea arabica (coffee) seed extract provides additional antioxidant protection.

This azelaic acid serum is gentle, so it is suitable for those with a sensitive skin type.

4. Mario Badescu Clarifying Serum with Azelaic Acid

Mario Badescu Clarifying Serum with Azelaic Acid

Mario Badescu Clarifying Serum with Azelaic Acid is a post-blemish serum for sensitive acne-prone skin. It is formulated to calm redness and irritation while reducing the appearance of pimples and breakouts.

The serum contains azelaic acid in both its original pure form and the derivative form of potassium azeloyl diglycinate to fight blemishes while also brightening the skin.

The serum also contains prebiotic inulin, alpha-glucan oligosaccharide, and postbiotic lactobacillus ferment lysate to promote beneficial and healthy skin flora.

Java tea extract helps to reduce the look of pores and shiny, oily skin. Aloe vera calms and hydrates your skin.

Scutellaria baicalensis root extract, also known as Skullcap root extract, is an antioxidant that helps to protect your skin from environmental damage and may even help target P. acnes, the bacteria that causes acne.

Lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), is included in the serum to help exfoliate dead skin cells and improve cell turnover for brighter skin while acting as a humectant to help bind moisture to your skin.

Sodium hyaluronate and hydrolyzed sodium hyaluronate are forms of hyaluronic acid that attract and retain moisture and hydrate your skin.

The lightweight serum has a thin gel-like consistency that doesn’t feel heavy or greasy on the skin.

5. Cos De Baha Azelaic Acid 10% Serum

Cos De Baha Azelaic Acid 10% Serum

Cos De Baha Azelaic Acid 10% Serum uses 10% azelaic acid and niacinamide to repair skin damage, target acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and rosacea, and clarify and brighten your skin.

While azelaic can help with acne and brighten your skin, niacinamide is a powerful ingredient that addresses these skin concerns as well.

Niacinamide is an effective treatment for acne. This clinical study found that a 4% nicotinamide gel had comparable results to a 1% clindamycin gel in the treatment of acne.

But niacinamide’s benefits don’t stop there. Niacinamide interrupts melanin (pigment) production in our skin, which helps to fade away dark spots and even out your skin tone.

Niacinamide is also an antioxidant that can help protect your skin from environmental damage. It even stimulates collagen production for smoother skin and ceramide production for a strong skin barrier.

This serum is also formulated with sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid), which helps hydrate and plump parched skin, and aloe vera extract, a skincare ingredient that soothes and calms your skin.

You only need a few drops of this lightweight serum that you can use in both your morning and evening skincare routines. This serum gets extra points for its super affordable drugstore pricing.

6. Peach Slices Redness Relief Azelaic Acid Serum

Peach Slices Redness Relief Azelaic Acid Serum

Peach Slices Redness Relief Azelaic Acid Serum utilizes a 10% concentration of azelaic acid to reduce inflammation and redness and even out skin tone.

Azelaic acid works its magic to calm irritation and even signs of rosacea. It also targets acne and breakouts with its antibacterial benefits.

This acid is formulated to gently exfoliate to remove dead skin cells, helping to clear away uneven patchy skin tone.

Green algae is known to have a variety of benefits for your skin. It is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that can help to hydrate and nourish your skin.

Panthenol, or vitamin B5, is a humectant that helps to attract and retain moisture in your skin while also having anti-inflammatory benefits.

Centella asiatica extract, also known as Gotu kola or cica, is an ingredient popular in Korean skincare. It has various benefits, including aiding in wound healing, reducing inflammation, and boosting hyaluronic acid production.

All of these properties make Centella asiatica an excellent ingredient for those with acne-prone skin.

The creamy white serum is fragrance-free and can be used by all skin types, especially those prone to sensitivity, rosacea, redness, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, blackheads, uneven skin tone and texture, acne, and breakouts.

7. PCA SKIN Pigment Bar

PCA SKIN Pigment Bar

PCA SKIN Pigment Bar uses azelaic acid in conjunction with other skin brighteners to reduce hyperpigmentation and discoloration while calming your skin.

While serums are an excellent way to address pigment issues, cleansers like Pigment Bar can be an effective way to help even skin tone on both your face and body.

The solid cleansing bar blends azelaic acid with kojic acid and niacinamide for brighter skin. Kojic acid is derived from mushrooms and helps to lighten your skin.

Niacinamide is an effective brightening agent with anti-inflammatory properties to calm your skin while reducing transepidermal water loss.

It also contains green tea extract, an antioxidant that can help protect your skin from free radical damage from environmental factors like pollution and UV rays.

This cleansing bar is ideal for those with normal to combination skin prone to hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone.

Please note that Pigment Bar contains rosewood essential oil that has a woodsy floral scent.

8. The Inkey List SuperSolutions 10% Azelaic Serum Redness Relief Solution

The Inkey List SuperSolutions 10% Azelaic Serum Redness Relief Solution, handheld.

The Inkey List SuperSolutions 10% Azelaic Serum Redness Relief Solution is a lightweight serum formulated with 10% azelaic acid.

The quick-absorbing serum soothes irritated skin and reduces the look of redness and uneven skin tone.

A 10% concentration of azelaic acid has antibacterial and brightening benefits along with soothing and calming properties to reduce the appearance of redness.

The Inkey List SuperSolutions 10% Azelaic Serum Redness Relief Solution, flatlay next to sample on hand.

The serum also contains micro-fine green-colored particles to mask redness. A 0.3% concentration of allantoin from the comfrey plant helps soothe your skin and reduce irritation.

The serum leaves no white cast and doesn’t pill on your skin, making it comfortable to wear with other skincare products and makeup.

Perfect for irritated skin, redness, and a blotchy, uneven skin tone, the serum is formulated for all skin types, including sensitive skin and those prone to rosacea.

The Benefits of Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid that is found in grains like wheat and barley. It’s also produced by yeast that naturally lives on our skin.

Azelaic acid has many benefits for your skin, including being an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial.

These properties make azelaic acid an effective ingredient for treating acne. Azelaic acid helps to unclog pores, reduce redness and inflammation, and kill the bacteria that can cause acne breakouts.

Azelaic acid can also help brighten your skin and even skin tone. It accomplishes this by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its color.

Azelaic acid interferes with an enzyme called tyrosinase, which is needed for melanin production.

This makes azelaic acid an excellent choice for those with hyperpigmentation or melasma.

So, if you’re looking for an ingredient that can help with acne and improve the overall appearance of your skin, including an even complexion, look for azelaic acid in your skincare products!

Azelaic Acid Side Effects

Azelaic acid is generally well-tolerated, but like any skincare product or active ingredient, it can cause side effects, particularly in individuals with sensitive skin or those who are new to the product.

Here are some potential side effects to keep in mind:

  • Skin Irritation: Some users might experience skin irritation, such as redness, burning, stinging, or itching upon application. This is more likely to happen during the initial days of usage as your skin adjusts to the product.
  • Dryness and Peeling: Azelaic acid can cause dryness and peeling of your skin, especially if used in high concentrations or if used too frequently.
  • Changes in Skin Color: In some rare instances, azelaic acid may cause changes in skin color.

If you experience severe or persistent side effects, it’s best to stop using the product and consult with a dermatologist or your healthcare provider.

Always perform a patch test when introducing a new product into your skincare routine. If you’re new to azelaic acid, it’s advisable to start using the product slowly, such as every other day or even less frequently, and gradually increase as your skin becomes accustomed to it.

While azelaic acid doesn’t increase photosensitivity (like certain other exfoliating skincare acids do), it’s always a good idea to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher during the day to protect your skin, especially when you’re using active ingredients that can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage.

Azelaic Acid Conflicts

While azelaic acid is a versatile skincare ingredient that can work well with other active ingredients when specifically formulated together in the same product, when mixing different products, specific combinations of active ingredients with azelaic acid may not be suitable for everyone. These include:

  • Other Direct Acids: Using azelaic acid with other direct acids like AHAs (i.e., glycolic, mandelic, and lactic acid) and BHAs (salicylic acid) can increase the likelihood of skin irritation, dryness, and peeling because these all act as exfoliants and might be too harsh when used together.
  • Retinoids: Retinoids, like retinol and prescription retinoids, are powerful skincare ingredients that can also potentially cause skin irritation, particularly when you first start using them. If you are using retinoids and azelaic acid in the same skincare routine, it’s crucial to monitor your skin closely for any signs of over-exfoliation or irritation. Some people might be able to tolerate this combination, but it can be too much for others.
  • Pure Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid): Azelaic acid and pure Vitamin C are both excellent for brightening your skin and evening out skin tone. However, depending on the active concentration, mixing them can cause skin irritation and redness.

It’s important to note that everyone’s skin is different. What irritates my skin might not irritate another’s.

It can also be helpful to apply different active ingredients at different times of the day (for example, azelaic acid in the morning and retinol or vitamin C at night) to avoid potential interactions and irritation.

Final Thoughts On The Best Azelaic Acid Serums

Azelaic acid is a multi-tasking skin care ingredient that can help with multiple skin concerns, including acne, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and redness.

If you’re looking for an effective way to target these issues, consider adding one of these serums, cleansers, or creams with azelaic acid to your skincare routine.

They remind me of two of my other favorite affordable skincare brands: The Ordinary and The Inkey List, with a few key differences, which I will explain later. First, I’ll discuss the seven products I tested in this Facetheory review.

Facetheory Review: cleanser, toner, serums, eye cream and moisturizer.

Facetheory Review

Facetheory offers several products for various skin concerns and skin types. (I have a combination skin type, and my skin concerns are mostly aging-related.)

Facetheory Vitamin C Cleanser

Facetheory Vitamin C Cleanser

Facetheory Vitamin C Cleanser is a bit different from other cleansers, starting with its packaging. The cleanser comes in a wide-mouth glass jar.

The cleanser is formulated to remove dirt and debris while being less harsh than other cleansers that contain soap.

This face wash contains a vitamin C derivative, sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP), which is a stable form of pure vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid). SAP is an antioxidant that can help to brighten your skin and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

SAP also protects the skin from environmental stressors. If you have acne-prone skin, this is the vitamin C derivative to use since SAP may even help with acne.

Apricot kernel, sweet almond, and avocado oils are plant oils rich in fatty acids. These oils can help nourish and moisturize the skin and give the cleanser a luxurious and emollient feel.

Facetheory Vitamin C Cleanser open and sampled on spatula.

You only need to use a small amount of cleanser, as it has a thick creamy texture that feels very rich upon application. While noted as a cleanser for combination skin, it is suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin.

I think dehydrated and dry skin would appreciate this moisturizing cleanser, as it never leaves your skin feeling tight or stripped.

The cleanser comes in a scented and unscented version. The scent version contains Mandarin peel essential oil. I chose the scented version, which imparts a light citrus fragrance.

I didn’t love the packaging because if you don’t use a spatula or scoop to remove the product, you’ll need to use your fingers, which is not very hygienic. Also, once you get about halfway through the jar, it gets a little hard to remove the cleanser. I would prefer a pump, which I think would completely change the application experience.

Otherwise, I enjoyed using this cleanser. It was one of the most moisturizing cleansers I’ve tried and left my face soft and supple. I think this would be a great AM cleanser, especially if you get the scented version, which has a bright, uplifting scent.

Facetheory Glycolacsal Solution

Facetheory Glycolacsal Solution

Facetheory Glycolacsal Solution is a glycolic acid toner formulated to help improve the appearance of dullness, fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.

This exfoliating toner contains 8.5% glycolic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA).

Glycolic acid works by breaking up the bonds that hold dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. This increase in cell turnover can help to improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, and uneven skin tone for a brighter, smoother complexion.

In addition to glycolic acid, the toning solution contains 1% salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA)

Like alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids exfoliate the skin’s surface. But BHAs are also oil-soluble, which means they can travel into your pores and clear away sebum (oil) and debris trapped inside.

Salicylic acid is also an anti-inflammatory, so it can help to soothe and calm the red, irritated skin.

The toner also contains 0.5% lactic acid, another AHA. Lactic acid has a larger molecule size than glycolic acid, so it is not as irritating.

Lactic acid not only exfoliates the skin but can also help hydrate and moisturize the skin. It is a Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), which is a compound found naturally in our epidermis that helps keep the skin hydrated and has water-binding properties.

The toner comes in a glass bottle without a pump or dispenser. Apply it by pouring a small amount onto a cotton pad and apply it to your face.

I have been using this toner for a few weeks. It tingles a bit upon application since I have somewhat sensitive skin, but it subsides quickly.

I think it has helped to improve the overall texture of my skin. My skin looks brighter and feels smoother.

I think this alcohol-free toner would be great for anyone looking for an effective glycolic acid toner for brightening and clarifying your skin texture and tone. Just be sure to follow the instructions and don’t overdo it, which can lead to irritation.

The toner is suitable for all skin types, but if you have sensitive skin, you may want to start slow to see how your skin responds to the trio of exfoliating acids.

NOTE: Since this toner contains AHAs and a BHA, it is important to wear sunscreen during the day while using it and for a week after, as exfoliating acids make your skin more sensitive to sun exposure.

Facetheory Exaglow Serum

Facetheory Exaglow Serum

Facetheory Exaglow Serum is a brightening serum that tackles hyperpigmentation, dark spots, uneven skin tone, and areas of rough skin texture.

While some brightening treatments use only one active ingredient to target dark spots, Exaglow Serum uses five:

1. Tranexamic Acid: The serum contains 5% tranexamic acid to help reduce the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Tranexamic acid is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine that inhibits melanin production. Melanin is the pigment that gives our skin its color. But when melanin is produced in excess, it can result in dark spots or patches on the skin.

Tranexamic acid is not harsh like some exfoliating acids, so most skin types can use it. This clinical study even found tranexamic acid to be a safe and effective treatment for melasma.

2. Niacinamide: Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that can help brighten the skin and even skin tone. Niacinamide can also help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reduce the look of enlarged pores, balance sebum (oil) production in the skin, and strengthen the skin barrier.

3. Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C Derivative): Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) is a stable and water-soluble form of vitamin C. Once SAP is absorbed into the skin, it is converted to ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and can provide the benefits of vitamin C.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help to brighten the skin and improve the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Vitamin C also has anti-aging benefits as it can help stimulate collagen production.

4. Glycyrrhiza Glabra Root Extract: Licorice extract is a natural skin brightener that can help to reduce the appearance of dark spots and discoloration. It is well tolerated by most skin types. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to soothe the skin.

5. Lactic Acid: Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that exfoliates the skin and improves the appearance of dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone. Lactic acid is also a Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), which helps to keep the skin hydrated and moisturized.

The serum also contains sodium hyaluronate, a form of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a moisture-binding ingredient that plumps and hydrates the skin.

The fragrance-free serum comes in an amber glass bottle with a dropper. It has a lightweight watery consistency.

Facetheory Exaglow Serum and dropper.

I have been using this serum for a few weeks during the day. As long as I give it a few minutes to dry down, it leaves my skin soft and smooth and does not interfere with makeup. I’m unsure if it is the lactic acid content, but my skin feels quite moisturized after applying the serum.

I have not noticed a huge difference in my skin tone, but I like it for its antioxidant content and brightening ingredients that cause zero irritation on my skin. Typically serums may contain a few ingredients to target dark spots and uneven skin tone, but this one contains five.

Sure, it’s a bit pricier than other drugstore brightening serums, but for the impressive formula, I think it’s worth the price.

I recommend this serum to anyone looking for an affordable brightening serum containing multiple active ingredients that target dark spots and discoloration.

Facetheory Mandelibright Serum

Facetheory Mandelibright Serum

Facetheory Mandelibright Serum is an exfoliating serum that contains 10% mandelic acid (at a pH of 3.5) plus 2% niacinamide to improve the look of pores and skin tone.

Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid with a larger molecule size than glycolic acid or lactic acid, so it absorbs slower and not as deep into the skin’s surface. This makes it more gentle on the skin and better suited to those with sensitive skin types.

Mandelic acid, like other AHAs, sweeps away dead skin cells for brighter skin and improved skin clarity. Mandelic acid has even been shown to be helpful in the treatment of acne.

The serum also contains licorice root extract to target dark spots, sodium hyaluronate to hydrate and maintain moisture, and green tea extract, a potent antioxidant. Green tea extract can help to protect the skin from free radical damage from environmental aggressors such as pollution and UV radiation.

Niacinamide brightens the skin, balances oily skin, and reduces the look of pores. Chamomile extract soothes the skin.

Facetheory Mandelibright Serum and dropper.

The serum has a light, watery consistency, and it is fragrance-free. The serum is packaged in an amber glass bottle with a dropper applicator.

Once the serum dries down, it has no tackiness or stickiness. I experience no irritation at all when using this serum, unlike most lactic acid and glycolic acid serums. I use it in my evening skincare routine and wake with smoother, clearer skin.

I think this serum would be a great option for those that want to address dark spots and uneven skin tone but can’t tolerate more potent AHAs like glycolic acid or lactic acid. It could also be ideal for someone with acne-prone skin, thanks to mandelic acid’s benefits for acne.

Facetheory Regenacalm Serum Pro

Facetheory Regenacalm Serum Pro

Facetheory Regenacalm Serum Pro contains 3% retinol liposomes, which are encapsulated retinol molecules that are designed to penetrate the skin slowly for reduced irritation.

I reached out to Facetheory to get the pure retinol concentration, and they told me that 3% encapsulated retinoid equates to 0.3% pure retinol.

Retinol is a form of vitamin A that helps to increase cell turnover, fades dark spots, and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s the gold standard in over-the-counter anti-aging ingredients.

The Regenacalm Serum also contains dill extract, which, per Facetheory, regenerates elastin, a protein that gives skin its firmness.

For skin brightening, the serum contains licorice root extract and sodium ascorbyl phosphate, a stable form of vitamin C. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate is less likely to cause irritation than pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid), making it a good choice for those with sensitive skin.

Ferulic acid and vitamin E are potent antioxidants that can help to protect the skin from environmental damage. Ferulic acid has been shown to increase the stability of a solution of vitamin C and vitamin E, doubling the duo’s photoprotection benefits!

Facetheory Regenacalm Serum Pro sampled on finger.

The serum has a light, milky consistency, and it is fragrance-free. It comes in an amber bottle with a pump, which helps protect the retinol in the formula from sun and air exposure since retinol degrades when it comes into contact with light and air.

I have been using this serum for a few weeks and notice smoother and brighter skin every morning after using it the night before.

The 0.3% concentration of retinol is gentle enough that I can use this serum multiple times a week without experiencing irritation. This is my favorite Facetheory product that I tested!

This serum is a great choice for those looking for an antioxidant-rich and gentle retinol product. I think it is an excellent anti-aging serum that is affordably priced.

A Note On Facetheory Serums That I Tested

All of the serums that I tested are water-based serums that contain the ingredient propanediol, which is a plant-based solvent and ingredient that dissolves other ingredients.

Propanediol is derived from corn sugar and acts as a moisturizer and skin conditioning agent. It can also improve the spreadability of a product. Propanediol is a natural alternative to synthetic ingredients like propylene glycol.

Propanediol can make your skin feel a bit oily when applied to your skin. (I first noticed this effect when using some The Ordinary products that contain propanediol.) The oily feeling goes away after a few minutes as the propanediol absorbs into the skin.

Facetheory Ocuwake Eye Cream

Facetheory Ocuwake Eye Cream

Facetheory Ocuwake Eye Cream contains a blend of actives formulated to reduce the look of dark circles and eye bags. The eye cream contains an impressive list of actives for such an affordable price.

The cream contains a base of lightweight and nourishing oils, including Moroccan argan oil, lightweight jojoba oil, and rice bran oil.

It also contains Synovea HR, a skin lightener whose active ingredient, hexylresorcinol, has been shown in clinical studies to reduce the appearance of dark circles and brighten the skin around the eye area.

Meiview is a bacterial ferment extract that stimulates collagen production for firmer skin with improved elasticity.

Licorice root extract targets dark circles while also helping to soothe the skin. Chamomile extract is included for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties.

Lactic acid improves cell turnover for reduced dullness and smoother skin around the eyes.

Sodium ascorbyl phosphate, a stable form of vitamin C, brightens the skin, and vitamin E and ferulic acid work with vitamin C to offer stronger photoprotection benefits.

Facetheory Ocuwake Eye Cream sampled on hand.

This eye cream comes in a metal tube that protects the ingredients from light and air.

A little goes a long way with this eye cream, so the tube will last quite some time.

Once again, this is another impressive formula from Facetheory. It feels lightweight under the eyes and isn’t sticky or greasy in the slightest. It doesn’t pill under makeup or concealer either.

I have been using this eye cream for a few weeks. I haven’t seen a noticeable improvement in my under-eye circles, but not much can touch my hereditary circles (I have to use concealer to hide them every day.)

I’m picky when it comes to eye creams, as some can be too thick and others not moisturizing enough. This eye cream strikes the right balance for me. I love all the actives in the formula, and the unscented formula is non-irritating.

If you are looking for an advanced formula that provides lightweight moisture for a brighter under-eye area, this eye cream could be a great affordable option.

This eye cream is formulated for all skin types.

Facetheory Relaxing Night Cream

Facetheory Relaxing Night Cream

Facetheory Relaxing Night Cream is formulated for combination and dry skin types to replenish and nourish the skin overnight.

This moisturizer contains shea butter, olive, rice bran, and argan oils to moisturize and revitalize the skin.

Vitamin C derivative sodium ascorbyl phosphate offers antioxidant benefits that protect the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

It comes in two versions: Lavender and Unscented. If you are a lavender fan, you’ll find that the cream really lives up to its name, as lavender oil’s light, calming fragrance is very calming.

I’ve been testing these products in the summer, and I found that while I enjoyed the light lavender scent, the oil-based cream was a bit too heavy for my skin.

If you have dry, dehydrated, or normal skin and love the scent of lavender, this could be a great option for a night cream.

Facetheory Product Benefits

  • Facetheory focuses on giving you the best bang for your buck by combining actives that target specific skin concerns, especially aging, acne, hyperpigmentation, and dark spots.
  • Some of the products give you a choice of unscented or scented versions. At such a low price point, this is a surprising but welcome option.
  • Most of the products that I tried contain a vitamin C derivative. I rarely find a skincare line that includes a vitamin C product in ALL the products I test, from the cleanser to the moisturizer and even the eye cream.
  • Since most of their products contain multiple actives, the products may target multiple skin concerns at the same time… i.e., wrinkles and fine lines, and dark spots.
  • The products are vegan, cruelty-free, and paraben-free.

Facetheory Drawbacks

  • Prices are higher than other low-priced skincare products, like The Ordinary and The Inkey List, although each product usually contains more actives than The Ordinary or The Inkey List.
  • If your skin is sensitive, you may not want a product with multiple actives since you increase your chances of having a reaction with multiple actives in a product.
  • While Facetheory focuses on sustainable packaging, the drawback is that some of the packaging is a little clunky and heavy due to the glass containers. I would prefer pumps for some of the products, like the cleanser and eye cream, but keep in mind the amber bottles and metal tubes protect them from degradation.

About Facetheory

Founded by Jamie Shuker in 2015, UK-based Facetheory is a skincare brand created for those who want high-performance, clean, and vegan skincare without the luxury price tag.

Facetheory concentrates on active ingredients targeted at specific skin types and skin concerns.

They focus on sustainable packaging and are phasing out single-use plastic. This is why most Facetheory products are available in amber glass jars with aluminum caps or in 100% aluminum tubes that you can recycle.

Facetheory products are vegan, cruelty-free (Leaping Bunny and PETA approved), and made in the UK.

Final Thoughts: Facetheory Review

I’m impressed with the results I’ve seen from Facetheory products and will continue to use them in my skincare routine. They are a nice alternative and a step up from The Ordinary, The Inkey List, e.l.f., and other low-priced skincare products.

Facetheory offers several products, and I have many more on my list to try, like their Supergel Oil-free Moisturizer for Oily and Acne-Prone Skin and Porebright Serum.

If you’re looking for affordable skincare that contains active ingredients to target your skin concerns, I think Facetheory is definitely worth checking out.

Have you tried Facetheory? I’d love to hear about your experience!

NIOD Survival 0 Review https://www.abeautyedit.com/niod-survival-0-review/ https://www.abeautyedit.com/niod-survival-0-review/#respond Tue, 01 Feb 2022 15:50:49 +0000 https://www.abeautyedit.com/?p=12865 While antioxidants from foods are excellent for our bodies, topical antioxidants are also great for our skin. There are quite a few effective antioxidant serums available, but NIOD (Non-Invasive Options in Dermal Science) has formulated a showstopper. NIOD always surprises me with its formulas, including this antioxidant serum.

From The Ordinary’s sister brand comes an antioxidant serum unlike any other: NIOD Survival 0. This antioxidant serum has been created to protect the skin from daily environmental aggressors while preventing future damage and repairing the long-term effects of aging.

NIOD Survival 0 Antioxidant Serum

I am all for protecting and repairing the skin, but is it worth it? I will discuss my thoughts on the serum in this NIOD Survival 0 review.

NIOD Survival 0

NIOD Survival 0 Antioxidant Serum hand held

NIOD Survival 0 is an antioxidant serum that NIOD calls a Networked Defence System.

Like other NIOD products, it is filled with skin repair technologies that will help protect the skin from oxidative stress and other environmental and lifestyle aggressors from factors like UV rays, pollution, smog, stress, infrared and blue light.

The serum contains the following ingredients and advanced technologies:

  • Yeast-Derived Superoxide Dismutase: Also known as SOD, this potent antioxidant is our body’s enzyme that protects our cells from free radical damage, which can lead to the visible signs of aging in our skin. In vitro testing has shown better antioxidant activity with SOD than with vitamin E or green tea.
  • Dimethylmethoxy Chromanol: This antioxidant protects against both reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), which age the skin. This super antioxidant is more potent than resveratrol and ferulic acid against free radicals, UV exposure, stress, and pollution.
  • Xanthophyll: Purified lutein is a strong antioxidant that protects skin from blue light and improves skin hydration and elasticity.
  • Fractionated Melanin: Our bodies produce melanin to protect our skin from UV radiation and other oxidative stress but have limited potency in respect to High Energy Visible light. NIOD Survival 0 contains a fractionated form of melanin designed to absorb light in the range of 400-500 nm wavelengths.
  • Pycnogenol: Also known as Pinus Pinaster Bark Extract, this plant extract from maritime pine bark is rich in antioxidants like procyanidins and phenolic acids that protect the skin from photodamage. This ingredient also offers anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic benefits. This study found that Pycnogenol increases skin hydration and skin elasticity.
  • Tomato Carotenoid Complex: Reduces redness that comes along with UV exposure.
  • Prebiotic Complex of Gluco-Oligosaccharides and Inulin: A skin prebiotic complex that supports healthy microbial skin flora without stimulating undesirable and harmful microorganisms.
  • Alteromonas Ferment Extract: Soothes the skin while helping to calm irritation. This purified deep-sea algae physically protects against pollution and smog.
  • Padina Pavonica Thallus Extract: Extracted from brown alga located in the Mediterranean sea, this extract supports calcium bioavailability to protect against pollution.
  • Purified Knotgrass: Protects against infrared and reduces photodamage in the skin.
  • Squalane: A saturated hydrocarbon similar to the sebum (oil) in our skin. It moisturizes and helps maintain hydration.
  • Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil: A lightweight wax ester. Jojoba oil balances, smoothes, softens the skin, and increases water-binding capacity.

The serum also contains moisturizing glycerin and several amino acids, which are building blocks for structural proteins like collagen and elastin in the skin.

NIOD Survival 0 Review

NIOD Survival 0 Antioxidant Serum bottle and sampled on hand

NIOD Survival 0 feels quite moisturizing, which I attribute to the formula’s glycerin, squalane, and jojoba oil. It is non-irritating and works well under moisturizers, sunscreen, and makeup.

NIOD Survival 0 Antioxidant Serum bottle and rubbed into hand

This serum has a silky texture and a deep orange/brown shade. As you can see from the photos, the shade dissipates upon absorption into my skin.

Even so, NIOD notes that you should avoid contact with light clothing due to the carotenoid content. I haven’t had an issue with this since I use this during the day, so I don’t worry about it getting on my pillow or sheets at night.

I haven’t seen noticeable changes in my skin after using this serum, as it’s not formulated to smooth wrinkles or decrease hyperpigmentation. I use other targeted products for those skin concerns. This serum mainly provides protection and prevention. It has a calming and soothing effect on my skin.

I’ve used The Ordinary antioxidants, and while they are effective, I think this serum is probably the most potent antioxidant product I’ve ever used. It provides a nice radiance to my skin tone and smooths and softens the surface of my skin.

Another plus for this serum is the price. NIOD’s products can get a bit pricey, but I was surprised to see that this is priced at a very reasonable $25 for 1 fl oz (30 ml).

I appreciate the pump bottle because the serum has somewhat of a running texture, so the pump makes application quick and easy. It has a light natural, earthy, spicy scent.

Drawbacks? Survival 0 contains jojoba oil, so if you would prefer an oil-free serum, this may not be the serum for you.

How To Use NIOD Survival 0

NIOD directs you to apply this serum in your evening skincare routine and makes it clear that it does not protect against UVA rays or UVB rays. It is formulated for all skin tones. Apply it after your cleanser and toner but before your moisturizer.

You can also apply it during the day and follow with sun protection (which is what I choose to do – I use mineral sunscreens, as I prefer physical filters to chemical filters).

While this antioxidant serum does not provide sunscreen protection, NIOD offers three other formulations of Survival 0 that sun protection in the form of SPF 10, SPF 20, or SPF 30.

NIOD Survival 10, NIOD Survival 20, and NIOD Survival 30 provide mineral sunscreen protection from zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. If you are interested in purchasing the NIOD Surivial serum with sunscreen, be sure to buy NIOD Survival 30, which contains broad-spectrum sunscreen protection of SPF 30. Using a product with SPF 10 or SPF 20 is not enough UV protection.

This serum is formulated at a pH of 6.75 – 7.25. The pH level plays well with other many actives, unlike another potent antioxidant, vitamin C, which is very acidic in its pure form.

Survival 0 is non-irritating, making it ideal for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

NIOD Survival 0 and Retinol

NIOD recommends using Survival 0 and retinol on alternate, different nights of the week.

Where to Buy NIOD Survival 0

You can purchase NIOD Survival 0 in the US at NIOD, or SkinStore.

NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate Review https://www.abeautyedit.com/niod-fractionated-eye-contour-concentrate-review/ https://www.abeautyedit.com/niod-fractionated-eye-contour-concentrate-review/#respond Tue, 25 Jan 2022 16:54:09 +0000 https://www.abeautyedit.com/?p=12832 NIOD, the lesser-known sister company of popular skincare brand The Ordinary, is all about no-nonsense skin care formulations that use the most advanced technologies available.

While these products are pricier than the super affordable The Ordinary products, you get quality skincare products that provide results.

NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate held by hand on blue background

NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate was a no-brainer purchase for me, as I always struggle with the signs of aging on the skin around my eyes. I snatched it up during NIOD’s annual sale and will discuss my experience with the eye concentrate serum in this NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate review.

This NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate review post contains affiliate links, and any purchases made through these links will result in a commission for me at no extra cost to you. Please read my Disclosure for additional information.

NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate

NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate serum on blue background

NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate (FECC) is a little bottle filled with big-name active ingredients. In fact, it contains 28 clinical technologies.

What is it formulated to do? It targets the visible signs of aging around your eyes. Yes! The formula’s anti-aging benefits go to work on both your upper eyelids and your lower eyelids as well as under your eyes.

It targets dynamic lines and static lines, loss of elasticity, dark circles, puffiness, and uneven skin texture—basically all of those pesky signs of aging.

You are supposed to start to see results in as little as three days, and improvements will continue into eight weeks as you continue to use the concentrate.

Peptides and Antioxidants

There are many peptides in this eye concentrate. Peptides are amino acids and building blocks of proteins like collagen and elastin and are responsible for communication between your cells.

This communication can lead to new collagen production, diminished appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improved skin elasticity.

NIOD FECC also contains many antioxidants, like epigallocatechin gallatyl glucoside and gallyl glucoside. Antioxidants are some of the best actives for the skin.

They can protect your skin from oxidative stressors that damage collagen like the sun, pollution, smoking, and other environmental factors.

Antioxidants can help decrease the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, dullness, and discoloration in the skin.

More Anti-Aging Ingredients

Some of the more well-known ingredients in this NIOD eye serum that you be familiar with include:

Niacinamide: Niacinamide is undoubtedly one of my favorite skincare ingredients. It has a wealth of research behind it and offers multiple benefits for the skin.

Niacinamide has been shown to fight acne, fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and uneven skin tone while improving skin barrier function by increasing ceramide synthesis. It’s a true multitasker and can be used by all skin types.

Sodium Hyaluronate: This is the salt form of hyaluronic acid (HA). It can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, which makes it an incredible hydrator and a promising ingredient for those with dry skin.

Ascorbyl Glucoside (Vitamin C derivative): Ascorbyl glucoside is a stable form of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) that provides antioxidant benefits.

It also penetrates the skin readily without altering the skin barrier function, improves collagen production, and helps fade hyperpigmentation.

Ascorbic Acid: This pure form of vitamin C is one of the best ingredients for brightening dull, discolored skin.

Pure vitamin C is also a potent antioxidant that fights free radicals, helps to smooth the look of wrinkles and fine lines, and fights pigmentation.

Centella Asiatica Extract: This Asian herb is a staple ingredient in Korean skincare and beauty products.

It’s a powerful antioxidant that has anti-inflammatory and moisturizing benefits. It can even help with wound healing and skin conditions like eczema.

Glycolic Acid: Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that exfoliates the outer layer of skin, helping to fight wrinkles and pigmentation. It also encourages new cell growth and can help with acne.

Glycolic acid has the smallest molecules of all the AHAs, which means it can penetrate deeper into your skin to get down to work.

Lactic Acid: Lactic acid is another AHA that works similarly to glycolic acid but has larger molecules, so it doesn’t penetrate the skin as deeply. It can help to brighten pigmentation, improve elasticity and fade wrinkles.

Technology, Delivery Systems & Additional Ingredients

NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate held by hand in box on blue background

The key ingredients in FECC are very impressive, but its delivery systems really make this eye concentrate stand out.

Getting hyaluronic acid into the skin to provide hydration is a huge benefit, and NIOD’s advanced delivery systems ensure that the eye area will be able to receive the benefits of HA and each and every other exciting ingredient in this eye treatment.

Let me preface these technology descriptions by saying they are highly technical so if you want to learn more details about each technology, please see NIOD’s descriptions on their product page.

Here are some highlights of the other ingredients and technologies in the concentrate:

Hyaluronic Acid and Collagen Technologies

Fibroblast Drone: A drone in skincare? NIOD describes this as “perhaps a most advanced skin technology available.”

Drone delivery is another way of describing encapsulating an ingredient, in this case, peptides within a polymer core, so they don’t release until they reach their target.

The peptides zero in on their target, fibroblasts, which produce collagen. This technology improves the delivery and effectiveness of hyaluronic acid.

Methyl-Glucoside-6-Phosphate (MG6P): This active is part of a complex tradenamed Neodermyl, which also contains the amino acid/mineral complex Copper Lysinate/Prolinate. The complex works to improve collagen and elastin production.

It is supposed to enhance the look of skin firmness and density and reduce wrinkles within 15 days, per the manufacturer.

Darutoside Complex: A plant technology that improves the look of both upper and lower eyelid elasticity while reducing the look of folds in the upper eyelids. It also has wound healing and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Albizia Julibrissin Bark Extract: This Persian Silk Tree biotechnology provides antioxidant benefits that fight wrinkles.

Matrixyl Synth’6: A complex containing Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38, a peptide that is supposed to increase the production of the six major components of the skin matrix to reduce wrinkles, especially crow’s feet around the eyes and forehead wrinkles.

Expression Technologies That Target Wrinkles

Neuron Drone (sounds very high-tech!): This second drone technology targets expression lines. The exciting part of this technology is that it reduces peptide wastage by 90%.

SNAP-25 Pentapeptide-18 Complex: The next generation of Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 (Argireline) helps reduce the signs of expression lines, offering a 100% further efficacy over Argireline alone.

Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate (Syn-Ake): Walgerin-1 tripeptide technology in the form of a topical Botox alternative that helps to smooth wrinkles.

S-Mu-Conotoxin Cniiic Acetate: Snail venom mimetic technology in the active mimics a peptide found in marine cone snail venom to reduce wrinkle depth.

Uneven Pigmentation Technologies

Marigold/Yeast Ferment Bio-Complex: This biotechnology targets a reduction in the look of dark circles and sensitivity.

Fluid Retention Technologies

Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5: Helps to reduce the look of under-eye puffiness within 15 days with continued use per the manufacturer.

Algae-Harvested Sulphated Polysaccharides: This antioxidant-rich marine technology improves the look of resiliency and reduces the look of under-eye puffiness.

Fraxinus Excelsior (Ash Tree) Bark Extract: An antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that has regenerative properties for the skin.

NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate Review

NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate serum opened with dropper

Honestly, I’ve never reviewed a product with such a complex collection of science-driven ingredients.

At the end of the day, though, what really matters is how it performs. It may contain the most amazing ingredients, but if you are not satisfied with its performance, it won’t matter.

I am happy to say that the eye concentrate has provided excellent results over the past several weeks that I’ve been using it.

I first had to get used to the product’s texture, as I am used to using eye creams, not concentrates. I’ve never really loved eye serums all that much since they usually aren’t that moisturizing, and I end up adding an eye cream on top.

But NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate differs from other eye serums I’ve tried.

It has a slightly thicker serum consistency and has no stickiness but drenches your eye area in hydration, thanks to the technologies discussed above.

I don’t feel like I need an eye cream on top of it, although I like to apply an eye cream after the concentrate in my evening skincare routine to seal in all of the potent actives.

When used alone in my morning skincare routine, I still feel moisture under my eyes at the end of the day. And it doesn’t interfere with makeup application either.

NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate serum and box

While nothing topical can truly plump the hollows under my eyes, I find that this eye serum has helped to smooth fine lines and soften the puffiness and darkness that plagues my under-eye area.

It hydrates exceptionally well for an eye concentrate.

I have some crepiness on the inner corners under my eyes, and this eye treatment has also helped soften it. While it doesn’t erase wrinkles and fine lines, and I still have dark circles, I have seen an improvement.

A little goes a long way with this eye contour concentrate serum.

After cleansing, toning, and serums, I apply one drop per eye on the delicate skin around the eye contour and follow with the rest of my skincare routine.

NIOD suggests patch testing before applying this and any other new skincare product for the first time. And, of course, don’t forget sunscreen in your morning skincare routine.

A 15ml bottle retails for $70. It’s a bit pricey, but a little really does go a long way.

Final Thoughts: NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate

Although it contains an intimidating ingredient list that can be hard to decipher, this is a very impressive eye treatment product.

I don’t see it as a cure-all, but some fantastic technologies are included in this technologically advanced eye concentrate.

It makes the thin, delicate skin around my eyes feel smooth, hydrated, and plump, which I love.

Yes, the serum is on the pricey side, but it does deliver. It takes a commitment to see results, but after several weeks, I can say that I have seen an improvement in the look of my eye area.

NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex Review https://www.abeautyedit.com/niod-multi-molecular-hyaluronic-complex-review/ https://www.abeautyedit.com/niod-multi-molecular-hyaluronic-complex-review/#respond Tue, 11 Jan 2022 16:59:40 +0000 https://www.abeautyedit.com/?p=12764 You may have heard of using hyaluronic acid on your skin. It’s a skincare ingredient known for its hydrating and skin-plumping abilities. It has become very popular in the past few years as an ingredient in skin care products and can benefit all skin types, as it is a substance that naturally occurs in the skin.

NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex on blue background

NIOD’s Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex (MMHC2) is not just any hyaluronic acid serum. It’s the most advanced hyaluronic acid serum ingredient list that I’ve ever seen.

I couldn’t wait to give it a try, as it was the first product I tried from NIOD, the sister brand of one of my favorite brands, The Ordinary.

I will discuss my experience and thoughts on the serum in this NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex Review.

This NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex review post contains affiliate links, and any purchases made through these links will result in a commission for me at no extra cost to you. Please read my Disclosure for additional information.

NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex

NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex (MMHC2) is the second generation of this NIOD hyaluronic acid serum.

NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex contains a whopping 15 forms of hyaluronic compounds, hyaluronic precursors, and a hyaluronic support technology along with a peptide complex to help increase hydration and improve skin elasticity and plumpness for younger-looking, healthier and bouncier skin.

Formulated at a pH of 4.00 – 5.00, this serum is suitable for all skin types, alcohol-free, oil-free, silicone-free, nut-free, vegan, and gluten-free. It’s also cruelty-free, like The Ordinary and the rest of the Deciem family of products.

NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex on blue background

You might just want to remember that this serum contains 15 forms of hyaluronic compounds and skip the rest of this section.

Otherwise, if you want to get into the technical details, NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex contains the following hyaluronic technologies:

  • Direct Form Hyaluronic Acid (MMHC2): This direct form of hyaluronic acid is not as common and is used less in skincare products than the salt form of hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate). This very active form benefits the skin by increasing the look of skin elasticity. The serum contains 1.0% direct hyaluronic acid to offer hydration and pro-repair support.
  • Enzyme-Reacted Glucosamine Amide HA Pre-Cursor (Rapid Reaction): This compound comes from enzymatic phosphorylation of N-acetyl-glucosamine through a green chemistry process.
  • Bio-Yeast HA Pre-Cursor (Moderate Term Reaction): Made up of oligomers of acetylated glucuronic acids derived from biofermentation.
  • Novel HA Pre-Cursor Peptide Complex (Sustained Reaction): The first peptide complex that is pro-decorin (decorin can help tighten the skin and reduce wrinkles and fine lines) and pro-lumican (lumican plays an important role in collagen production).
  • Myristoyl nonapeptide-3 is a newer peptide that is supposed to provide similar results as retinol like increased cell turnover and collagen synthesis but without unwanted side effects like irritation and redness.
  • Marine Hyaluronic Complex of Exopolysaccharides (MMHC2): Fermentation derived from a marine bacterial strain, and sustainably sourced from Brittany, France. Per the manufacturer, it is supposed to provide moisture and improve the look of wrinkles.
  • Tamarind-Derived Hyaluronic Complex: Hyaluronic complex that is vegetable-derived and similar to the hyaluronic acid found in the body. This complex supports short-term hydration and with continued use, improves the look of skin elasticity.
  • Mushroom-Derived Hyaluronic Acid Complex: Derived from fungi, this hyaluronic acid complex provides high levels of hydration.
NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex on blue background with dropper
  • Locust Bean-Derived Hyaluronic Complex: A higher-weight saccharide from the locust bean that provides non-tacky, and nearly weightless surface hydration.
  • Hyaluronic Acid Crosspoylmer: A non-animal cross-linked form of hyaluronic acid that has a gel structure and forms a film on the skin to continuously deliver hydration with continued use. The delivery of hydration allows for smaller-sized technologies in this serum to be effective while in the presence of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, which usually impairs its absorption.
  • Very Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Complex: This “near-impossible” low molecular weight hyaluronic acid complex provides extended hydration in a format that has never been associated with hyaluronic acid before.
  • Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Complex (Low Molecular Weight)This is hyaluronic acid complex provides lasting hydration with continued use.
  • Mid Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Complex: Hyaluronic acid complex that provides short-term hydration.
  • Fermentation-Derived High Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid: A highly-purified hyaluronic acid derived from fermentation to improve surface hydration while preventing moisture loss.
  • Hyaluronic Acid Butyrate: Obtained from a butyric acid and hyaluronan reaction, this complex supports a healthy skin barrier.
  • Hyaluronic Support System of Adaptogenic Water Starved Clary Sage Flavonoids, Phenylethanoid Glycosides From Narrow Lead Plantain and Dermal Amino Acids (MMHC2): Creates a non-clogging water-protective barrier on the skin to help the skin retain water and support optimal performance from hyaluronic compounds. Multiple amino acids (building blocks of collagen and elastin proteins) moisturize the skin.

My NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex Review

Flatlay of NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex in opened two piece box on blue background

NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex is unlike any other hyaluronic acid serum I’ve ever used. The ingredient list is intimidating (unless you’re a chemist!), and uses technologies I’ve never seen before in a hyaluronic acid serum, but the results have been impressive.

The moment I opened the bottle, I could tell it was going to be different. The serum has a very thin consistency, slightly thicker than water. It absorbs into the skin like water with zero stickiness or tackiness. It almost disappears into my skin and leaves my skin feeling soft, smooth, and hydrated.

I’ve noticed how plump my skin has been feeling over the past few weeks, even in the dead of winter. I usually struggle with tight, flaky dehydrated skin when it gets really cold out, but I think it’s this serum that is keeping my skin healthy and hydrated.

This is the most expensive hyaluronic acid serum that I’ve tried (although I picked it up during Deciem’s annual November sale at a discount).

Is it worth it? I think it is. This serum has a unique blend of technologies to enhance hydration and comfort. The texture is more comfortable on the skin than any other HA serum I’ve used, and my skin surface and skin barrier are staying intact and healthy.

If you have a dry skin type or if you are dealing with dehydrated, flaky skin in the colder weather months, or you simply want the latest technology in a hyaluronic acid serum, this serum is definitely worth considering.

The serum comes in two sizes, so if you want to give it a try without spending full price, you can get a 15ml (0.5 oz) bottle for $36, or go with the larger 30 ml (1 oz) bottle for $62.

How To Apply NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex (MMHC2)

Apply AM and PM after cleansing and toning but under other skincare products. (It really works well under other skincare products thanks to its extremely thin consistency.)

NIOD Copper Amino Isolate Serum 3 1:1 and NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex on blue background

NIOD notes that Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex works well with NIOD Copper Amino Isolate Serum 3 1:1. (I like using them together, as both serums are extremely lightweight and non-sticky.)

They both work well under sunscreen and makeup too. Per NIOD’s directions, apply Copper Amino Isolate Serum first and then follow with NIOD MMHC2.

Be sure to patch test before applying this serum or any new skin care product to your skin for the first time. This is especially important for sensitive skin types.

The Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid For Skin

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance that is naturally occurring in our skin. The highest concentration of HA is found in the dermal layer (lower layer) of the skin, providing hydration and making our skin look plumper.

Hyaluronic acid is also found in less concentrated amounts in the spaces between skin cells in the epidermis (upper layer of skin). It acts as a cushion and helps maintain the skin’s structure. The smallest amount of HA is found in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of our skin.

Hyaluronic acid becomes even more important as we age because the amount of hyaluronic acid in our skin decreases due to various factors. This decrease can cause fine lines and wrinkles to form on the face and dehydration and dryness to appear on the skin.

Replenishing your skin with topical hyaluronic acid can help plump the skin, fill in fine lines and wrinkles, keep your skin hydrated, and ensure that your skin stays moisturized.

Many different types of hyaluronic acid molecules are available for use in skincare products that provide different benefits for the skin based on their size and chemical format.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

There is no shortage of hyaluronic acid serums on the market. If you want to stick to the Deciem brand (NIOD’s parent company) but want to spend MUCH LESS, The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 serum combines low, medium, and high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid plus a next-generation HA crosspolymer at a combined concentration of 2%, plus vitamin B5 for additional hydration.

Definitely not as elegant in texture as NIOD, but much cheaper. Please see my complete review for more details on The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid.

Another affordable option is The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid. It contains 2% multi-molecular hyaluronic acid in a lightweight, skin-friendly, and non-sticky serum.

The different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid are used to provide maximum hydration benefits for dry, dehydrated skin.

As a bonus, The Inkey List Hyaluronic Acid serum contains Matrixyl 3000 peptide, a peptide duo that supports collagen production for reduced wrinkles and skin roughness and firmer skin with improved elasticity.

About NIOD

Part of the Deciem family of skincare brands founded in 2013 by Brandon Truaxe, NIOD stands for “Non-Invasive Options in Dermal Science” and is skincare for the hyper-educated featuring scientifically advanced ingredients.

NIOD avoids trends and marketing to offer skincare solutions that support skin health and long-lasting results.

The brand uses clinically advanced ingredients with cutting-edge delivery systems, really unlike any other skincare brand out there.

NIOD offers a portfolio of skincare products that address a variety of skin concerns, including wrinkles, dryness, and acne, to get optimal results with minimal irritation. The products are all about long-lasting results as opposed to short-term and superficial benefits.

If you are a skincare enthusiast like me, NIOD is a really interesting, forward-thinking brand. You may find yourself wanting to try all of their products. I purchased several and will provide honest reviews of my experience with them in the coming weeks and months.

NIOD Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex: The Ultimate Hyaluronic Acid Serum

For me, this unique hyaluronic acid product was worth the price for its very advanced formula.

If you’re someone who struggles with dry skin or dehydrated skin that feels tight and uncomfortable during extreme weather, this product might be worth trying.

The thin and comfortable consistency makes it easy to layer other skincare products on top, and I am pleased with my results after using it for several weeks.
