The Ordinary Argireline Review

Fine lines and wrinkles are a few of the most noticeable visible signs of aging, particularly around the eyes and forehead.

While many The Ordinary anti-aging serums are available to address wrinkles and fine lines, The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10% is The Ordinary’s serum formulated to tackle expression lines and wrinkles, specifically around the eyes and forehead area.

I was very interested in putting this serum to the test, as I’ve noticed fine lines becoming more noticeable on my forehead and between my eyes.

So in this The Ordinary Argireline review, I’ll discuss what the serum does, how to use it, some alternatives, and whether or not I think it’s worth the purchase.

These signs of aging include fine lines, forehead wrinkles, smile lines, the dreaded “eleven” vertical lines between your eyebrows (glabellar lines), and crow’s feet, which are the wrinkles that form at the outer corners of your eyes.

The serum is formulated for all skin types and is oil-free, silicone-free, alcohol-free, nut-free, and gluten-free.

Like all The Ordinary products, it’s vegan and cruelty-free.

The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10%

Key Ingredient: Acetyl Hexapeptide-8

The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10% contains a high 10% concentration of Argireline, which is a trademarked peptide by Lipotec S.A.U of Barcelona, Spain.

Argireline is also known by its chemical name, acetyl hexapeptide-8.

Argireline is commonly compared to Botox, as it targets dynamic wrinkles on your face, which are wrinkles caused by muscle contractions.

When you frown, squint, or make other facial expressions, the facial muscles in those areas contract. Due to the repetitive nature of these expressions, they can cause wrinkles and fine lines over time.

Argireline works by inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters, which relaxes the muscles in your face and reduces muscle contractions that cause fine lines and wrinkles.

The manufacturer claims that Argireline decreases wrinkle volume and length after just one week.

This clinical study found that Argireline increases skin moisturization and elasticity while decreasing wrinkle depth.

Of course, Argireline is not nearly as strong as Botox, but it is often considered a good alternative for those looking for a safe and affordable option that doesn’t require a trip to the doctor’s office.

If you choose to use this serum, keep in mind that this peptide for expression wrinkles isn’t going to match the results you see from Botox, but it is a very inexpensive over-the-counter option that isn’t invasive.

Matrixyl and Argireline: Better Together

The combination of these two serums work in a complementary way to target fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of firmness and elasticity.

The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA contains two generations of Matrixyl: Matrixyl 3000 and Matrixyl Synthe’6.

These peptide complexes work together to restore and maintain the skin’s youthful appearance.

Like Argireline, the serum targets fine lines and wrinkles while supporting collagen production for improved skin firmness and elasticity.

Matrixyl 3000 is a peptide duo that features the peptides palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7. These peptides are supposed to stimulate collagen production for firmer skin.

This clinical study found that Matrixyl 3000 peptide complex reduces wrinkle depth, volume, density, and skin roughness and improves skin elasticity and tone.

Matrixyl Synthe’6 features palmitoyl tripeptide-38, which is supposed to improve the production of collagen I, II, and IV, fibronectin, laminin 5, and hyaluronic acid, which are the main components of the extracellular skin matrix.

It appears to be particularly effective at smoothing crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles.

The Ordinary Matrixyl serum also contains sodium hyaluronate, a form of hyaluronic acid, which is a moisture-binding ingredient that keeps skin plump and hydrated.

The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA’s active ingredients work in your skin to hydrate, plump, and increase firmness, which are also benefits of Botox. So both serums aim to give results similar to Botox.

The Ordinary Argireline Review

I was very interested in trying The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10% because I have fine lines and wrinkles around my eyes and forehead and am always looking for new, affordable ways to target them.

This lightweight serum has a watery consistency that sinks into my skin quickly and doesn’t leave my skin greasy or oily.

It feels invisible under makeup, too. I’ve been using the serum strictly on my forehead wrinkles and on a line between my eyes.

After a month or so, I didn’t notice much difference in the fine lines until I paired it with The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA.

The serums work well together to improve visible results of smoother skin on my forehead and between my eyes.

I like to apply Argireline Solution 10% first since it has a thinner consistency and then follow with Matrixyl 10% + HA, which has a thicker consistency.

My skin feels more moisturized when using The Ordinary Matrixyl combined with The Ordinary Argireline, thanks to the hyaluronic acid in The Ordinary Matrixyl.

My fine lines have softened slightly after using both for a second month.

I think using these two serums together could supercharge your results. Even though they won’t give you the same results as Botox, they are much more affordable and convenient.

I still can’t believe how inexpensive the serums are for their advanced formulas.

Will these serums completely erase wrinkles and fine lines?

Probably not, but they might help soften them, giving your skin a more youthful appearance.

They could help keep your wrinkles and fine lines from getting worse. Who knows, maybe they could even delay the need for Botox.

How To Use The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10%

After the cleansing and toning steps of your skincare routine, apply a few drops to your forehead and around your eyes. You can use the serum in both your morning and evening skincare routines.

If you pair it with another serum like The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA, you can mix them together, or since Argireline has a thinner consistency, you can apply Argireline first.

Allow it to absorb, and then apply Matrixyl 10% + HA on areas of concern on your face.

Follow with a nourishing moisturizer for your skin type, and don’t forget to apply sunscreen in your AM skincare routine.

The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10% Conflicts

The Ordinary notes that you should not use The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10% with direct acids like AHAs or BHAs (i.e., glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid), pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid), resveratrol, and ferulic acid.

Be sure to patch test before using this or any other skincare product for the first time.

Alternatives To The Ordinary Argireline Serum

While The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10% is an effective serum that addresses fine lines and wrinkles, it isn’t the only serum from The Ordinary that addresses these skin concerns.

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum + HA

This serum contains a mix of peptides, including Argirelox (Argireline plus Pentapeptide-18), to target expression lines.

The serum also contains Matrixyl 3000, Matrixyl Synthe’6, SYN-AKE, Relistase, multiple hyaluronic acid complexes, and moisturizing amino acids.

The concentration of Argireline is lower than Argireline Solution 10%, but Multi-Peptide Serum + HA contains many additional anti-aging technologies, making it an outstanding anti-aging serum that is very reasonably priced.

This serum contains the same ingredients as The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum + HA plus a 1% concentration of pure copper peptides (Copper Tripeptide-1).

Also known as GHK-Cu, this copper peptide complex has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, and it helps stimulate collagen and elastin production.

Collagen and elastin are proteins found naturally in our skin and are responsible for keeping our skin firm and bouncy. Unfortunately, the production of these proteins decreases as we age.

These copper peptides target fine and dynamic lines and help improve smoothness and firmness. 

One other benefit of Copper Tripeptide-1 is that it has reparative and wound-healing properties and may even help break down scar tissue.

Yes, it’s one of the most expensive, if not the most expensive The Ordinary product, but this concentration of active ingredients is very affordable compared to similar formulas from other brands.

NOTE: While The Ordinary “Buffet” + Copper Peptides 1% is a blue shade, once absorbed, it doesn’t affect the color of your skin.

The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA

The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA is an anti-aging serum that contains two active peptides, Matrixyl 3000 and Matrixyl Synthe’6.

These peptides help boost collagen production and reduce wrinkle depth and skin roughness while improving skin elasticity.

The serum also contains sodium hyaluronate, also known as hyaluronic acid, which acts like a sponge to draw water to the skin for improved hydration.

The Ordinary Retinol & Retinoids

The Ordinary offers three retinol serums and three Granactive Retinoid serums to address the visible signs of aging, including wrinkles and fine lines.

The Ordinary retinol serums come in three concentrations:

• The Ordinary 0.2% Retinol in Squalane
• The Ordinary 0.5% Retinol in Squalane
• The Ordinary 1% Retinol in Squalane

Retinol is known as the gold standard of over-the-counter anti-aging ingredients, and its benefits are well-studied.

Retinol helps increase cell turnover, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, improve uneven skin tone, and address dullness and rough texture.

Squalane is a natural moisturizer and similar in structure to our skin’s own sebum. It improves surface-level hydration and offsets some of the dryness that can come along with retinol.

Squalane is also non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog pores.

Unfortunately, retinol can come with unwanted side effects like redness, peeling, and irritation.

So it’s a good idea to start out with a lower retinol concentration, like 0.2% Retinol in Squalane, and then slowly move up to stronger concentrations as your skin tolerance increases.

Also, be sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher while using retinol/retinoids and for a week after since retinoids can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Granactive Retinoid is a newer retinoid technology that is formulated to offer similar results as retinol with less irritation.

The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion combines 2% Granactive Retinoid with retinol in a creamy emulsion that helps to reduce visible signs of aging and improve skin clarity.

The Ordinary also offers 2% Granactive Retinoid in Squalane and 5% Granactive Retinoid in Squalane serums if you prefer a lightweight and moisturizing squalane base.

Derma E Advanced Peptides & Flora-Collagen Moisturizer

The moisturizer contains some impressive actives, including Argireline, Pycnogenol (see my review of The Ordinary Pcynogenol here), Matrixyl Synthe’6, plant-derived collagen (Acacia seyal gum extract), green tea extract, vitamin E, and soothing panthenol.

This Derma E moisturizer is affordable and a good option if you want an all-in-one anti-aging product. It hydrates, moisturizes, and improves skin texture and tone.

Final Thoughts: The Ordinary Argireline Review

As one of The Ordinary’s best-selling serums, I think The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10% is a great option for those looking for a cost-effective way to target fine lines and wrinkles.

The serum contains Argireline, a peptide that relaxes the muscles that cause expression lines around your eyes and forehead.

I had more noticeable results when I combined The Ordinary Argireline Solution 10% with The Ordinary Matrixyl 10% + HA.

Luckily both serums cost around $20 total, so I don’t think you can find a more affordable duo to target dynamic facial lines and wrinkles caused by muscle movement.
